Norwich Women's Hockey

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

A few years ago they pretty much kept everyone that tried out, in fact I remember how some posters would joke about how there were more Norwich team members in the stands than fans. Today's budget realities will probably only permit a full team plus a few. I haven't seen the list but there will no doubt be cuts. One tip for the bubble kids... Hard work and "like-ability" is huge.

Not really as much of an issue at D3. If kids are coming to the school primarily to play hockey or try out for the team then that is money coming into the school that wouldn't have been otherwise. The costs to keep that kid on the roster pale in comparison to the cost of the kid were to go to another school.

It's a reason D3 programs are thriving and some D1 programs are going by the boards during these tougher economic times.

Well last I knew Norwich was "full" so the idea of needing to attract students is somewhat of a non issue. More important is the fact that when a hockey player applies to a school, they want to play hockey, then go to class and not the other way around. (At least that was the case with my hockey player, and she did ok). IMHO it's in the best interest of the athlete to chose a school where they are sure to make the team and get plenty of ice time...no?

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Although I haven't seen them play I do know they have a good coach with strong recruiting skills. Watch for this team to continue to make noise this year and years to come.i

I totally agree with you, have heard great things about their coaching staff. I too expect great things from them this year.

I think players want to play, no doubt. But I definitely believe that a LARGE segment of girls who play hockey put academics ahead of or at least equal to hockey, especially at the Division 3 level. They should because there is no payday at the end of girls Div 3 hockey (but there is in your academic achievement).

I also know that there is definitely a group of kids that would take a bench/stands spot on a prestigious school's team (particularly Division 1) rather than play more on a less prestigious school's team. Sort of goes hand in hand with the above - if you value academics more and are using hockey to get into the school you perceive to have the best academics, then playing time is less of a concern (and there is no risk of a lost scholarship at Division 3 if you don't live up to hockey expectations or stop playing). At Ivies they sometimes use these kids (who typically have high academic indices) to boost the team's AI and allow them to get in a star player with a low AI. They know they won't get much playing time, but they are OK with it because they get to go to the Ivy school. Everyone wins in these cases (as long as the kid realizes that they aren't going to play much).

Hm, I'll let others chime in. Meanwhile, where is that BIG 2016 class list Prez?? Hurry it up will ya! :)

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Even though RIT/Norwich only played 4 times in two years, these are the games I will miss watching. And now with RIT out of the way, it will be interesting to see how the Norwich players react to having all the pressure on them to win every game and championship. The past two years no team had more pressure than RIT, and they finished on top.

The target is clearly on Norwich now. Good luck to them, and can't wait to see what all the hype is about. With all the talk anything less than 30-0 will be a disappointment. Hopefully the transfers coming in don't disrupt the chemistry Norwich has created.

Who is talking 30-0. That would be unprecedented. If memory serves me correctly, there has been only one team in D3 that went undefeated over the years, but it included a few ties. That was quite a few years ago now (5 or 6 ?). With more strong competition at the top cannot see anyone go 30-0, or undefeated for that matter. Teams will have an off day or two during the year.

You sir are spot on. I mentioned in a earlier post that Norwich is the team to beat this season, not unbeatable!?

Where's Dunning... :)

Hey RIT Fan - Why don't you change your name to RIT Snob. RIT was one of 7 or 8 teams who could have won the championship last year and they had a hot goalie, which will help them this year, but to make a comment like that with teams like Plattsburgh, Gustavus, Middlebury, Elmira, River Falls and Bowdoin (For you obserbear) is completely ridiculous. Take a hike over to the D1 threads, and leave us alone. To say RIT had more pressure is ridiculous and pompous!! Take your hot air and go over to the D1 arena, we won't miss you!!!!

Why so angry?

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

I would think last year Norwich had as much pressure to perform as RIT given that they were defending champs

.....and Amherst, Middlebury, Plattsburgh, Elmira, River Falls and GA as they are targets for every team that plays them as they are the measuring sticks for consistent successful hockey programs. Everybody gets excited when they play these teams that have a rich, extremely successful hockey histories!!

Lest we forget, Middlebury won 136 straight DIII games over 7 years!!! A different era for sure, but still...

There is no pay day for those playing D1 either  Take the Best women's player ever, #4 Angela Ruggiero. Has she made more money playing hockey compared to her college teammates that went into the work force? Probably not.

She's probably in debt like the rest of the country....just sayin. :)

Here's my take on this. As we all know, with the absence of scholarships at DIII there is very little incentive for a coach to keep a marginal player. (yes, I know DI schollies are only one year at a time but nobody gets their pulled out from under them if they are making an effort to compete.) As a result, part of playing DIII is always looking over your shoulder to see who is being recruited to take your spot. With all that said, there are many players at DIII who are good enough to never have to look over their shoulders, and many of those girls by definition would be good enough to make a DI roster. I therefore would conclude that those girls are playing DIII because they put something OTHER than hockey as their top priority.

ok ok... anyone else have an opinion?? So Far two posters (parents I gather) believe it's not so much about hockey at the D3 level... at Norwich?

Are you implying that at Norwich it must be about hockey because why else would someone go there? That does seem a bit harsh.
