Re: North Dakota announces name.
I was originally supportive regarding the name change...but does anyone think the schools approach to this process is a really bad reflection on the school? IMO the most publicity laden event in the school's history has been extremely poorly handled (to be generous). This is a place of higher education afterall...and its apparently struggled at making a decision.
Not sure if I can recount the process. First, they did nothing for a year, two, three...not sure. Then they solicited names from the public (which might not have been bad by itself). But then they released the entire list and there were some really embarrassing stuff in that list. Not a good reflection on the school. Then they waited some more. Then they put together a finalist list. And after all that, it ended up with a handful of really weak names (admittedly the two finalists were not the worst). I also heard at one point that one of the weaker names they ruled out - Nodaks - was reintroduced. But I'm not sure if its in or out now. More delays. Now they're going to have a final vote (we'll see)...and we find that voters are selling their votes in mass. All this with the potential outcome that the name will be the 'Hawks'.
Not a good outcome if you're trying to sell your school to potential students who are looking for educational partners to help create their future.
I think the only real mistake made thus far was changing the voting rules midstream. Initially they said the final 5 selections would be reduced to the top 2 vote getters, and then after the results were announced decided to let "Nodaks" in supposedly because of how close it was in vote totals to the #2 choice. In the end however all this did was create an extra round of voting, since the votes have come out exactly as they would have had Nodaks been left out after the first vote.
Your other criticisms are off target, imho.
First, there is no easy way of doing this. This was a pretty unique situation where we had an institution, and it's fan base, drug kicking and screaming into a name change. In all other name selections I can recall, either they were selecting a name for a brand new team, or the institution itself had decided to change the name, over the objection of some alumni.
I don't think the delay really hurt anything. I'm sure the school was hoping the tribes would relent and permit use of Fighting Sioux, but it didn't happen, so a new name had to be selected. Having a committee pick among the choices was fine by me as well. Someone has to narrow the field, and I think a committee is better than say just one person.
Soliciting names from the public is fine as well. Why not? It's pretty arrogant to think, as a committee, that only the names you can think of are the best ideas. Releasing the names was probably required anyway since it is a public institution. As for the ridiculous nominations, of course that was going to occur since anyone, including fans of opposing teams could and did offer their nominations.
Finally, as for the charge that we ended up with only weak choices, you are not the first to make this. But I'll ask you, as I've asked everyone else who has leveled this charge. So, what should the name be, then? Everyone seems to think we have a poor field of names to choose from, but I've yet to hear a suggestion where I (and pretty much everyone else) immediately respond, "that's it!" I've never believed we were going to hear a name and even a majority of the fan base or alumni of the school would agree that's the way we should go. No name is going to sound correct, since everyone alive has been calling us the "Fighting Sioux" their entire lives.
But, by all means, since you think we've narrowed the field to only "weak" choices, lets hear it. What name(s) should have been in the field?
Think about this for a moment. Assume the University of Minnesota has no nickname, and you've never even used or considered using the name "Gophers" before, and now the fans are going to choose a nickname. Do you really think "Gophers" is the name you're going to come up with? No chance. Can you imagine the ridicule that would be heaped upon the person who would suggest such a name?
25 years from now this will be a distant memory. UND will have a nickname that is not particularly unique, just another variation of the name "hawks", but no one will give it another thought.
