Re: North Dakota announces name.
The "no nickname" choice is far and away the fan favorite, for obvious reasons. Furthermore, a sizable number of former UND athletes have spoken out publicly in favor of that option. Finally, eliminating that choice wasn't something the Committee decided unanimously or without some fairly heated discussion. Pretty prominent Committee members like Dave St. Peter were vocally in favor of including it. The decision to eliminate it, as I understand it, was primarily driven by faculty representatives on the committee who are strongly opposed to the idea that the school will go without a nickname and fans will continue to refer to them as the Sioux.
If I was the Pres, I'd ask the Committee to do the work they've done and come up with their suggestions. But if I thought they made a mistake, I'd step in too.
It's a tricky situation, and candidly, I sympathize with both the President and the Committee.Actually, a bunch of us GPLers were on a road trip this weekend, and when this news came up...we pretty much agreed that if we were on the committee, we'd think about quitting.
Prez: here's your ONE job. Go.
Committee: here's our final name list
Prez: Oh, that's nice. Still going to go against everything you worked for and consider the "no-names."
What a circus, even IF it's a smoke screen.
