North Dakota announces name.

Re: North Dakota announces name.

I think the point that there is no name in existence that will be embraced is absolutely correct. (Especially since "Badgers" is already taken.) And since that is most definitely the case, prioritizing moving forward as quickly as possible would have seemed wise. As stated, it won't really matter what is chosen down the road. IMHO, the only thing that could possibly have affected making it any better was to simply get on it with it.

Completely agree. The problem is that after doing exactly jacksh^t in trying to save the Fighting Sioux nickname, the moron ND state legislators decided to get involved and place the three year moratorium on allowing UND to pick a new nickname. This all would have been over a long time ago if those pea-brained twits hadn't decided to prolong the process for literally no reason.

As it seems you're constitutionally restrained from picking legislators who don't even have enough intelligence to choose to live somewhere other than North Dakota, you're kind of stuck there.

Still I think the admin could have probably moved this along much more quickly than they have if they weren't trying for some nonexistent 'please everyone' solution. But I suppose they are trying to be 'inclusive'. UND- the Berkley of the Plains.

Re: North Dakota announces name.

Again, others may disagree...but IMO it was not professionally done.

Most organizations would open it up for fan feedback (similar to UND). Much of this is for marketing, to drum up enthusiasm, and send them message that fans are playing a role. The key is to only share a sampling of names that were in the running with the public. Too much embarrassing stuff in there to show it all. UND took a serious risk that national media might run with some of these names. A committee would do an extensive study on the top quarter or so (including possibly bringing in outside research firms). These organizations would have a press release to announce the finalists with a winner to follow shortly thereafter in a huge multifaceted marketing campaign. All this within a year. While critical to the process, consumer input needs to be interpreted and filtered by a host of other criteria. Its the way the vast majority of major organizations and corporations do it.

I agree with you often, 5mn, but not on the release of names point. I was glad they did that. It was perfectly obvious many were in jest, and it was also obvious they did not reflect the views of the admin or even many of the fans. Many were funny. Besides, a simple open records request would have disclosed them to the public anyway, and in this day and age, you can be quite sure someone would have made that request. Probably a gopher fan. :) I thought it was fun reading them, and I doubt recruiters for Facebook or Coca Cola for Fleet Farm would mark down a UND candidate based on the names submitted. Other aspects of the process? Yeah, not good. If you say you will have a runoff between the top two options, have a runoff between the top two.

But the whole thing is basically white noise, IMO. Hockey gets a lot of attention from hockey fans in GF and around the state, but the med, law, engineering, aviation, education schools will keep doing what they do. For example, as much as I love hockey, my most memorable event at UND was a writers conference many of the beat poets attended, including Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Peter Orlovsky, Gregory Corso, Gary Snyder, and Michael McClure, none of whom had probably ever heard of UND, much less its hockey team. It'll all be OK.

North Dakota announces... another vote.

North Dakota announces... another vote.

Can we just change the name of this thread to: "North Dakota announces... another vote."

No chance this will be resolved within the next year. As soon as one is chosen the whole process will head straight for court for appeals and law suits. There are a lot of day-time soaps that didn't last this long or have as much drama.

burd is a man of culture, I never would have guessed by the posts in other threads. Sandbagger. :) I'm not sure if the rough rider loss last Friday helped or hurt UW.

I actually read beyond my name this time. :)

All good points. And of course, none of this stuff is do or die. Its just the biggest variable market of potential students for UND is the twin cities (lots of UND advertising around). And hockey is a big potential hook for students looking at going there. I just think its a different process than one would expect to see.

This post is a perfect illustration of the problem UND faced. You don't even care what the end result is and are still criticizing how UND went about this. If they had gone about this exactly how you suggest, you would compliment them on how they did a great job but others would complain about how UND did it completely wrong. No matter what UND did or how they went about this, people would complain and criticize the process. It is and was a no-win situation.

Who knows. Its not a big deal. Just making a side comment about methodology.

Re: North Dakota announces name.

So, finally, at 10 AM CST they will announce the new name. Is everyone on pins and needles with anticipation to see if Roughriders or Fighting Hawks wins out?

I'm betting Hawks, one of my colleagues across the isle from me and a UND alum thinks it'll be Roughridrs.

For once, the Gopher fan is going to be right. Amazing. Fighting Hawks has by far had the most votes in both of the first two rounds, so it will almost certainly be the nickname.

UND has already stolen the logo and the goal song, there is no doubt they are gonna go all the way and just rename themselves the Hawks.

See my colleague was going with logic when he said it'd be Roughriders. I knew it would be UND fans voting so I went with the dumber name and I was right.:p

Re: North Dakota announces name.

Fighting Hawks it is.

Time to slap that old Blackhawks logo from the 1980s back on the front of the jersey and get back to business ;)
