NMU 2009-2010 Season

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

NMU is a school that rarely gets hit with NHL defections...What are your expectations (I know you are one of the most optimistic fan bases) for next year in the CCHA given the losses of

Key players: Olver, Gustafson, Stewart, Kaunisto
Others Graduating: TJ Miller, Butcher, Dorich, Smith

I think the offense will be just fine. Might take some time finding the right combos with new and returning players. Cheriwhican and Gron can fill the scoring gap left by Olver, Florek went from 18 points his freshman year to 35 this season. Hanson is clearly the offensive leader for this club going into next season, and I wouldnt be surprised if he got the C on his jersey.

The biggest question marks, and they are rather large...is the defense and goaltending.

Reid is a good goalie and an intelligent kid. He came in here knowing this was Stewie's team for two-three seasons. Its now his turn going into his junior season. Coreau is coming in as the 15th rated goalie in the NHL Central Scouting Rankings, so it will be interesting to see how much time both goalies see next season.

The Defense is going to suffer with the loss of Gussy, Miller and Doritch. Miller, in my mind, was the most valuable defenseman on the team. He gave 100% every second of every shift and Ive never seen a man block more shots in his career than Miller did in his four seasons. In turn, that helped Stewie out a lot. Follmer, Spady, Fernandez, and McCauley are the holdovers left on Defense. I'll be honest and say that scares me a little bit.

So where does this team finish next season? I know its early and two players jumped ship only a half a day ago but looking at what is coming in- I think this team is a top 6 CCHA club next season. A few games that may swing to Ws and we are looking at a top 4 team again, and NCAA chances for next season. Next season, I believe the most important thing is to avoid the slow start. Get some big wins under your belt, get the seniors rolling, and show the Freshman what Wildcat hockey is about. We dont want to the players slipping into the "woe is us" fan syndrome that crops up every Oct/Nov on these boards.

Who is L.A.'s AHL affiliate?

One last note, according to TV 6/NMU Presser...Ray is going to L.A. March 31st, and not Manchester, where they have an off day before taking back to the ice April 1st.

Not sure if Ray is going to L.A. to sign the contract before being placed in the AHL, or if he will play for the Kings.

He's reporting to the Kings.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Please tell me I'm reading this sentence incorrectly.;) ;)

C.J. Ludwig, the son of Dallas/Montreal D-Man Craig Ludwig is coming in, as is Stephan Vigier, the cousin of former Wildcat J.P. Vigier, who played at NMU 96-00 and with Atlanta 00-07.

Of all those key goal scorers, I'm really going to miss Al Dorich's ability to put the puck in the net. He was such an offensive threat while on the ice...

Oh wait. :D

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Congrats to Ray...has been a class act all four years at NMU, and hopefully his success from this season carries into the NHL.

Ray and JMFJ on the ice at the same time...could be interesting.

*Edit* Ray said something about a broken thumb and broken collarbone? So most likely wont see ice time this season.

It's interesting that all of the reports I've seen from various media outlets regarding NMU's early defections, Olver is getting all the ink and Gustafsson is more or less an afterthought. I think losing Gussy might be the bigger loss.

From an outsider's perspective, I pretty much agree. Olver was the offensive anchor of this team and worthy of all the praise he received. The kid was awesome. But, losing Gustafsson is a huge blow to the depth on the blue line, especially for such a young crew. Combine that with his leadership, and it's just as big of a loss, if not more.

From what I know -- that would not be a factor.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Another big problem on the blue line next year could be size. Spady showed himself more than capable at the NCAA's this year, but he, Macaulay and Fernandez are all under six feet. Vigiet is 5' 9" and Ludwig is 5' 11". Epp will be playing, which will help, and there's obviously more to successful defense than size, but the corps could have a tough time recouping from the losses this year.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

I am happy for these guys and a bit sad at the same time. Could have been something big brewing in Marquette for next season.

I heard something saying Stewart was competing in the skills competition on April 9th. Is this true?

Yes, Stewart will be taking part in the Frozen Four Skills Comp.

Vigier is a forward. Also, don't forget Follmer. Plus, according to the Heisenberg recruit site, another D-man is coming this fall. Ryan Kesti, a 6'2" 195 lbs. blueliner playing for Sioux City.

But definately, defense will be a focus for concern at the beginning of the season.

Brian Stewart has signed with the Flyers organization. My best guess is that it's an Amateur Tryout Agreement with their AHL affiliate in Glens Falls, NY, the Adirondack Phantoms, where Erik Gustafsson will make his debut against Syracuse tonight. Stewie will team with for Tech G Michael Lee-Teslak.
