NMU 2009-2010 Season

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Make it happen ;) Id like to play more Eastern schools, which I know is a logistical nightmare for a small school like NMU to pay their way out there.

Congrats to Walt's B.C. Eagles last night as well ;)

I would rather see you guys do a home and home deal with RIT. ;)

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

A month or so ago, the Denver thread said NMU is at Denver over the Christmas holiday. However it's not the Denver Cup. That will be played over the Thanksgiving break next year apparently.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

When does the schedule actually come out? At the banquet? Captains?

Basically, I am ready for October, already.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

That schedule sucks. Two back to back weekends on the road, and non back to back weekends at home

Wish we could add another NC series instead of that bye week.

Is the US-18 team too good to come here anymore?:D

We already get an extra NC series thanks to our trip TO Alaska. Two bye weeks are mandated by the NCAA rules (I'm pretty sure of the rule).

Most teams choose to push the bye weeks to either the first weekend of the season (Canadian Exhibition weekend or Superior Cup weekend) or around the holidays. It all depends how NC agreements and the league schedule shakes out as to when you can take off weeks.

NMU usually plays the first month straight through by hitting the ground running (ie: Canadian school the first couple days after coaches practice, NC games the first week or two (for better or worse, nothing like baptism by fire)). Generally it's easier to squeeze in NC games at the start of the year.

*edit* And I don't want to see a bye week or non-conference weekend any later than mid-January. The points race in the league is critical after the new year. We can't afford to sit like UAF or UNO and "lose" points by sitting home or not playing league opponents.

From an attendance standpoint, no back to back home series is a good thing. It means non season ticket holders don't have to pay for two series out of one paycheck. Also having neither LSSU series during Thanksgiving, Christmas or Spring Break is also a plus. Far too often we've seen one or both matchups againt LSSU take place on break, like this year. This schedule looks pretty decent when it comes to home and road games. Last year the Cats had 3 of their 4 longest trips in November. The quality of opponents part of the schedule looks like it is spread out better as well. gThe back to back road trips to Alaska and Bemidji will be tough, but the non-conference portion is the second weekend, so that's good. As far as replacing a bye week with non-conference games, that's impossible since NMU is a the maximum number of games (36) for teams not playing the Hall of Fame or Icebreaker. If NMU weren't going to Fairbanks, they would be allowed two fewer games played(34). All things considered, this is about as good a schedule as I've seen for NMU.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

We arent like Ferris/Lake State and schedule pointless games with AHA teams

Not quite. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm pretty sure if RIT wins the AHA's Autobid, they automatically become a TUC. Always nice to have a win against a TUC when it gets to Selection time. ;)

There are no "Auto-TUCs." The top 25 in the RPI are the TUCs. No exceptions.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

We're going to DU? Is that for a tournament, or are we actually playing DU?

Heck, I'm thinking about going regardless!

U of M at home the final series of the year. That could be fun.

My money is on that Friday night being Silent Auction night (it's usually the Friday of the last home regular season series). That could be HUGE, as it'll bring people out of the woodwork who will just come to see UofM play.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Not a tourney. Straight up non-conference matchup. No word if it includes a reciprocal trip to Marquette like the Wisco series (tourney, home series, away series).

Looking even further ahead, Wisco and St, Clooud are penciled in for 2011-2012. Maybe we can dump MTU that year and get DU at home? We would only get three non-conference series that year because it would be Alaska's turn to visit us.

I get the feeling the Superior Cup is done after 2010-2011.

*edit* Silent auction cannot be that weekend because of fire code. Too many people get packed in for Michigan that the concourse cannot be cluttered like it does for the silent auction.

It may not be as packed. Thats spring break.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

You have to credit Walt for scheduling teams like Denver, Wisconsin, and SCSU. I believe the team can be better off playing top competition as opposed to getting a false sense of confidence against lesser non-conference teams.

This. Though it will still bring the community members out of the woodwork. Shame it can't be that weekend.
It would be great to see Denver come here. I'd love it.
As for the Tech series, I can't see it going anywhere.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

I like the schedule and the first part of it isn't as imposing as the last couple of years. In fact, I like the overall layout and believe next years team will suprise many people who will have lessened expectations because of the early departures.

I love the idea of spending New Years in Denver and have to give credit to Walt for his scheduling decisions. For obvious reasons you would like to compete against the best to judge where you are but also in doing so allow yourself to compete for critical PWR points as well. Gone are the days of missing the NCAA's because of being swept at home by the likes of Wayne State...

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Hrm... I could spend New Years in CO... Start the week in Denver for the games then venture west down I-70 for some snowboarding... I like where this is going :p :D
