Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

Per NHL Network ticker:

Raffi Torres: 25 games, effective immediately.

Shanahan gets one right.

I hope this stops the headhunting and allows the skill players in the NHL to really shine for the next two months.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

So the difference between being a repeat offender and a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins is 24 games....

Torres and Neal's hits were very similiar. The only difference is Hossa hasn't been able to play yet since the hit and Coutirier was....Yup sounds like 24 games difference in punishment.

Wake me when the NHL stops blowing the Penguins. It's a freaking joke.

He's only been doing it for 6 years. Way to be on the ball, NHL.

You mean a re-re-re-re-re-re-repeat offender.

Just think, it was only 21 games difference between Torres' and Hagelin's hits!! Hey, both resulted in concussions, and Alfie has yet to play too!!

You Rangers fanatics need to keep the sand out of your vagina. Would you rather be in Shanny's shoes trying to find that ultra thin line to walk when making these decisions with GM's and the NHLPA breathing down your back criticizing every suspension? I think he's done pretty well so far for the playoffs.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

Based on Bradley-Terry rankings (i.e., KRACH) found here, the updated (after 4/20, old KRACH) most likely outcomes are:

West: LAK in 5 (43.1%), STL in 5 (64.1%), PHX in 5 (50.8%), NSH in 5 (100%)
East: NYR in 6 (39.6%), BOS in 6 (29.2%), NJD in 6 (29.7%), PHI in 6 (52.8%)

Overall winning probabilities:
West
VAN 18.4% - LAK 81.6%
STL 95.4% - SJS 4.63%
PHX 88.1% - CHI 11.9%
NSH 100.0% - DET 0.00%

East
NYR 69.0% - OTT 31.0%
BOS 56.0% - WAS 44.0%
FLA 43.2% - NJD 56.8%
PIT 22.3% - PHI 77.7%

As always, KRACH is not a perfect predictive system. In fact, it's not predictive at all; it's retrodictive. Home-ice advantage, momentum, and the like can not be accounted for reliably, so they are ignored.

Next Round possibilities:

Yes, though Alfredsson didn't have to go straight to the hospital, and Hagelin's a rookie, whereas Hossa was taken off the ice on a stretcher and as has been pointed out, Torres isn't exactly new to this sort of thing. I think the hit itself should influence Shanahan's decision more than the injury suffered (players can be fine after being hit illegally, and hurt after being hit cleanly) and I agree that it makes sense to make sure Hagelin gets the message early in his career by cracking down now, but there is definitely a reason for the discrepancy.

The Bruins are never going to score a goal on this kid, are they?

Oh I wasn't trying to say either suspension should be different. Just poking the bear(s) who b*tched and complained about how that compared to Carkner's suspension and whatnot. Rangers fans are a silly bunch ;)

If anything, I think Shanny should have given Weber a game for his stuff with Z in game 1, maybe given Carkner 2 games instead of 1, and probably should have given Neal atleast 2 games instead of 1, but I'm not up in arms over the punishments dished out so far.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

Torres' suspension just sends the message that they'll only bring the hammer down if you injure a guy. If you go for a dangerous hit and he turns out fine (which seems to happen a majority of the time), there's a good chance you'll just get a fine and a wrist-slap, unless you're expendable, in which case you might get a couple games.

A buddy at work is a Bahstan native, asked him yesterday if he was having Patrick Roy flashbacks?
Strangely he didn't appreciate that. :D

It's going to be so easy for the Flyers or Pens once Ottawa and Washington win their series. :D

No, Torres' suspension sends the message that they'll bring the hammer on morons like Torres who make hits like that more than a few times. I know Red Wing fans are upset about Weber only getting a fine, but let's not pretend that the situations are remotely similar.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

Ridiculous. When you compare the length of this to the shorter lengths of all sorts of much worse infractions, it just shows how clueless Shanahan is. If he had raised an elbow or something, they'd probably shoot him.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

Despite your implied accusations of butthurt, my status as a Wings fan has almost nothing to do with this. I'm saying that if you deliberately target the head with intent to injure, you should be suspended appropriately, regardless of whether or not the victim plays in the next game (and that goes for Bertuzzi, whose career should've ended a decade ago). A fine, or even a game or two, is not "appropriate".

Naturally, Torres should get plenty of games off on the basis that he is a repeat offender.

Bob, he had 3 straight games this year with questionable hits that were reviewed by the NHL, which eventually earned him a suspension. He's an extreme repeat offender, who seems to have a few hits like this a year that are dangerous and borderline dirty.

I agree that 25 is a steep jump though, but something needs to give. Heck, even Matt Cooke's learned to not be a Grade A toolbag after a 10 game suspension, so maybe Torres can change, he's actually good at hockey when he's not trying to hurt people. Basically the 25 games makes sure he's not going to play in the playoffs should Phoenix go on a run and every series for them goes to 7 games.
