Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!
Changeling
Cons:
(1) It seems to go well past the part of the story where you would initially think that it would end. It's almost like Return of the King: one storyline finds a resolution, then after fifteen minutes another one does. Repeat over and over again until the end.
(2) Even with that in mind, it seemed to move very slowly. Despite the fact that the main plot comes along quickly.
(3) Almost all of the characters are either 100% evil or 100% good. No shades of grey, and it really makes the film seem like its beating you over the head with the horrible things happening and the innocent people caught up in it. After a while, it gets absurd and you can't stop thinking that this might be a Lifetime movie in disguise. Given the subject matter and how "beaten over the head with how obviously terrible these things are", it's not far off. Sort of like watching a movie about how Nazis were the bad guys in WWII.
Pros: The last two scenes of this film automatically erase anything bad I can say about this movie. Especially with complaint (1), it seemed like the movie was changing gears so many times that there wouldn't be an actual theme to the film. But the last scene hammers it home in a way that I really appreciated. It could have (some would say should have) been much darker, but I think Eastwood makes his point clear enough as it is.
You also have to appreciate the detour into (spoiler) the execution of the child killer because he presents you the most horrible and deserving person you could imagine for capital punishment, yet he shows the execution in a way that is very difficult to stomach. You appreciate the fact that, despite justice being served, there's no way you could find peace after witnessing that. Ultimately, I guess I don't see what that has to do with Jolie's character never giving up on finding her son, but it was shot and edited so well that I think it definately deserved to be in the movie.
Evidently, this movie is actually very close to what actually happened, so I guess I have to take back (3) as well. I can't really take back (2), because although I eventually could appreciate all the different turns the story takes, I can't deny that it was very distracting while watching it the first time through. Cutting out some of the subplots might have helped, but I suppose it helps understand the breadth of what this woman went through.
Final score: Somewhere between a B and an A.
