New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Changeling:

Very good drama. Jolie really does shine, although it takes a little bit to warm up to her. Malkovich is surprisingly eloquent and sophisticated (but yeah, there is a moment or two where he goes into his *ed off Malkovich persona :D ). A little long, but worth it, as the general plot description is one story, but in reality there are 2 (maybe you could count 3) major storylines in the movie. Yes, every movie has some subplots, but this one seemed to have the "main" plot be an underlying "bassline" to the other storylines at times, used as a tool to advance the others, instead of vice versa.

It will take a lot out of you, it's rather heavy on the dialogue and character development, and as mentioned, the length of the movie (2:22) adds to it. And again, worth it, but dunno about repeat viewing.

Definitely recommend it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I was looking for movie recommendations from my brother for netflix and he gives me the following movies to me when I pick him up for the twins game:

Up
The Hurt Locker
Man on Wire
Waltz with Bashir
The Good Shepherd
Rivers and Tides

What an awesome brother.

When starting out, look up movies you've seen already and rate them, even if you hated them. It helps the suggestions feature on there, and you'll find movies you never heard of that you'd probably like.

UP: awesome.
Hurt Locker: great
Man on Wire: interesting but the main character is such a dink, I grew to loathe it after a while whenever he talked.
Waltz with Bashir: Heard great things
The Good Shepherd: Heard bad things
Rivers and Tides: Haven't heard anything!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

The only things I've heard from The Good Shepherd is that it's very slow and meticulous, and there's a lot of dialogue.

Oh noes, no real action????

But I will still see it and judge it for myself.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I've seen the Good Shepherd. It's a very good film, but as noted by Brent, its not for those who have Movie ADD. Its much more of a character movie than many people expect it to be.

Funny thing about the Good Shepherd: Leonardo DiCaprio was originally supposed to star in it. He dropped out because of commitments to The Departed.

Yet Matt Damon took on the role for him.

Zuh?

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I liked The Hurt Locker, but be aware that it's not exactly a "casual movie night" film. At least not in my book.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Liked it.

Hurt Locker - hugely overrated imho

I was really looking forward to Changeling, which of course means my expectations were high, and usually means I'll downgrade it a little unless it's brilliant. In this case, I was satisfied. It wasn't OMGWTEffBBQ!, but it was very solid.

The sidestory of him at the house disappointed me, it bordered on standard popcorn action, but overall, I can't say it totally detracted from the movie.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

up was brilliant. That opening scene was great. It established character relationships with the audience that last the whole movie. I've never seen that established so quickly. It really tugged at the heart strings.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Saw a couple (completely different) movies the last few days:

The Machinist - loved it. I've been wanting to watch this for a while, but had forgotten about it. Fortunately, it popped up when I did a search for "mind-bending" on Netflix :D

Hot Tub Time Machine - Good, not great. Watched this last night 'cause I had the night off work, and wanted to veg on the couch with my wife. I really liked the Crispin Glover story line, but then again, I just like Crispin Glover...

The Machinist was awesome...creepy as hell but awesome!

HTTM was just good fun...between the mocking of Cusack, the mocking of sci-fi time travel and even mocking its own plot it is just too funny :)

I saw the Good Sheppard and hated it. I really wanted to like it but it just really did nothing for me. I dont think I have movie ADD I just would rather watch a documentary as opposed to a movie being a documentary.

What Would Jesus Buy?

A documentary that focused on a little different subject than I thought it would. I thought it would examine the marketing of religion (like the WWJD bracelets), but instead it focused on the over-consumption of Americans, especially at Christmas.

Led by Reverend Billy, the Church Of Stop Shopping goes on tour, using comedy/performances (in the form of a decent sounding choir) spreading the word to "stop shopping." It's hilarious, and while they are over the top, the basic message they "preach" is really good: buy local, buy American, forgo big-box/corporate stores, if you buy at all.

It also covers some facts about American consumerism (such as you can fit all the people in North America, South America, and Europe in America's malls....at once).

Definitely recommend it, and I'd handcuff the doc "Maxed Out" as that explores Americans' credit habits.

.

I saw Hot tub in the theater with two of my good friends after a few cocktails. We were the only ones in the theatre. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard for so long in my life. It was a great time.

I just watched Runaway Jury...it was pretty decent.
