Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

On the general topic.
James Rocchi has always been a movie snob. I don't trust him to go to a movie and just enjoy it. Add to that, he's Canadian.

I may end up agreeing with him on this point, though. I've not had any interest in seeing that movie.

He may as well have ended that piece by sipping a glass of Cabernet with his pinky out. I mean, when Robert Christgau is being a music snob, at least he's funny about it.

I saw it. Is it the greatest comedy ever? Hardly. Did it have its moments that are supposed to make ordinary, beer-drinking, blue collar Americans laugh? Yes.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Saw Knight and Day on Friday. I thought it was a good summer spy flick, but nothing special and a lot of plot holes.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

The real snobbery could be assuming ordinary, beer-drinking, blue collar Americans are stupid.

Or the fact that some people can't let their guard down for two hours to enjoy a movie.

"Oh my, did he just pass gas? Well, I never!"

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Saw Toy Story 3 this afternoon -- absolutely amazing. Also, there was a Pixar short called "Night and Day" before it which was incredibly original and funny. They may be evil, but they are very good at what they do.

Choke:

Well, it was.....interesting. And *ed up, of course. Anjelica Huston is great as usual, and Kelly McDonald was superb. I really dunno what to say about this one. It's just....an odd movie.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Watching War of the Worlds...

This movie terrifies me for some reason.

Speilberg alternates between artist/autuer and slick blockbuster entertainer.

What has always interested me about him: even when he's in dumbed-down blockbuster mode (and War of the Worlds is definately in that vein), he's always been able to build suspense in a natural and frightening way.

Is there something wrong with expecting something more original that fart jokes and fatty-fall-down-go-boom humor?

If yes, then may I recommend such comic gold as RV, Wild Hogs and ABC Family original movies?

For the record, sometimes those movies (although not the specific ones you mentioned ;)) hit the spot. "The Mask" comes to mind. Or "Porky's."

Ah Porky's!! Now there's a classic movie. Gotta love the opening scene there were they're pranking the rest of their buddies there with the stripper and the Big Black Guy. :D

They do (although The Mask aint one of them). Porky's was great, and there's absolutely nothing redeeming about it. South Park: Bigger and Uncut was made with the explicit purpose of offending somebody with every frame. The Baby Ruth scene in Caddyshack is pure **** humor and is perfect. It's not crudity that's a problem or even stupidity (there's nothing stupider than the Stooges), it's when a studio takes a computer-generated Mad Libs script of other "product," then hands out checks to name talent to zombie walk through it, and the registers ring. As Jay Sherman said, "if it blows, just don't go."

Really didn't hold my interest; I literally fell asleep during it. The book was good, though not one of my favorite Palahniuk novels. The movie felt like it was missing something vital that made the story worth telling.

Saw Gojira, the original 1954 release of the Godzilla franchise. It's really fun.

Watched two Netflix streaming last night:

Synecdoche, New York, which was more screwed up than I expected, yet amazing. The acting was great, and the stories of life lived/love lost was fantastic.

For a completlely different direction, I also watched Surrogates. I know that this wasn't the best reviewed film ever, and there were some plot holes, but it wasn't terrible. Not bad for a late Sunday night popcorn flic (I should note, I never read the graphic novel)...

So has anyone seen/hated/liked:

- A-Team
- Knight and Day
- Shrek Forever
- Toy Story 3

I think I saw 1 post on TS3, but that was it.

I think Despicable Me looks like it could be good. But maybe thats because I laugh every time I see the trailer where the little girl says "it's soooo fluffy!" in a grunty voice. :D

I went to a preview screening two weeks back.

It's not anywhere near as clever as it seems. In fact, it's almost paint by number.

I've been wondering about that one. It keeps getting suggested to me by Netflix, due to my run on Kurosawa movies.

I'll add it to the list. Thanks!
