True Romance is just so ridiculously great its hard not to fall in love with it. Take everything you love about Tarantino but it is before he had complete control (Tony Scott directed) so it is a bit (and I stress a BIT) more restrained. Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette are excellent. Plus you add Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman AND Christopher Walken!

It has been a long time...might need to watch it again :)

You're the twentieth person who has recommended it. I just keep missing it somehow. I am a loser.

Jumanji (with The Rock) was more fun than it should have been. Haven't seen the second one yet.

I'm willing to give Top Gun 2 some benefit, unless they embargo early reviews, then they know it's terrible.

It will have 1 decent week because people like us will see it. (and I will bet I will love it) No one over the age of 25 will give a crap. Tom Cruise seems to only draw with Mission Impossible films these days...internationally it will go nowhere. I sometimes frequent a box office board (the amount of work they do looking into box office performance is insane...makes KRACH and PWR look like tiddlywinks) and not one of them thinks Top Gun will do a ****ed thing...even the ones who plan to see it ;)

Jumanji is a family film so it had an advantage. Plus, the Rock is one of the most bankable actors in the world. That movie had everything going for it to start and then it was a fun film anyways so it blew up ridiculous.

I am not mocking the school...I am mocking the losers who think because they can tell me what Hitchcock was showing in North By Northwest or the nuances of Red Violin (that film is a treasure but good god were these clowns over the top about it) that they (the students) are some kind of geniuses who should be revered. You know how the old adage was "Critics Are Just Film School Dropouts"? These guys couldnt even get into film school. At least I was taking it to fill my schedule and watch movies. They thought they were artists

(and now they are Sandwich Artists :D )

A senior monk and a junior monk were traveling together. At one point, they came to a river with a strong current. As the monks were preparing to cross the river, they saw a very young and beautiful woman also attempting to cross. The young woman asked if they could help her cross to the other side.

The two monks glanced at one another because they had taken vows not to touch a woman.

Then, without a word, the older monk picked up the woman, carried her across the river, placed her gently on the other side, and carried on his journey.

The younger monk couldn’t believe what had just happened. After rejoining his companion, he was speechless, and an hour passed without a word between them.

Two more hours passed, then three, finally the younger monk could contain himself any longer, and blurted out “As monks, we are not permitted to touch a woman. How could you then carry that woman on your shoulders?”

The older monk looked at him and replied, “Brother, I set her down on the other side of the river. Why are you still carrying her?”

And now they watch Rick and Morty and tell you “you’re not smart enough to understand it.”

QT also wrote Natural Born Killers, and then Oliver Stone did Oliver Stone on it. While I LOVE the movie, one of the great unanswered questions is, how would have turned out if QT directed the movie?

QT is not a style for everyone. That is for sure. And sometimes, it surprises me at who likes him and who doesn't; my mom LOVES his movies (except for the language, of course ;) ) and I never thought she would like his style. I can understand why people love or hate him.

Edit: and to piggyback Slappy, I get what some movies are trying to do. And I just don't care for it. It happens.

I didn’t like Natural Born Killers in the theater but I need to revisit because I love both Stone and Tarantino.

Did Tarantino not enjoy Stone’s interpretation? I don’t recall much about the film at all.

Oh and Kep, True Romance for Walken and Hopper alone is amazing. It’s so over the top.

Add in James Gandolfini, and Gary Oldman as the chameleon he always is and bam!

Tarantino disowned Stone's version of it.

And as for Django Unchained, the Bag Scene had me in TEARS I was laughing so hard. It did help it came after a rather intense scene, but dam....watching it with a couple friends, and we were acting like Beavis/Butthead in the "No Laughing" episode, for those that remember that.

Since everyone has advanced ticketing now, how full are theaters looking for Star Wars in your area?

Around here, "Primetime" (6-8pm) shows are about 80-85% full for the weekend with Thur/Fri being tougher... Some theaters are doing late shows (12-2am) Thur/Fri with moderate success. Initially there were some early morning shows (6-8am that seem to have disappeared). Gonna be interesting to see how this plays out on the Box Office front.

It is going to make a ton of money (probably around TLJ) but I gotta think that its legs are gonna be hurt by the critical reaction. (and the course correction) As someone who abhors critics and rottentomatoes it just adds fuel to my fire.

I still plan to see it Friday at 1130 and hope for the best but it almost sounds like they took the course correction way too far. Wont know til I see it though since I am still avoiding spoilers.

The Upside:

About a billionaire quadriplegic (Bryan Cranston) and his caregiver (Kevin Hart). Fish out of water/buddy movie. Cliched, stereotyped, etc, but I enjoyed it, due to the chemistry between Cranston and Hart. It's a straight up feel-good movie, and I didn't mind that. Some genuine funny moments, and some genuinely touching moments. I would recommend it.

All I think about when I hear about that Bryan Cranston role is Jim Jefferies' bit about auditioning one for his own TV series, and having an able-bodied actor pretend to be a quadriplegic (he even hired a nurse!) in front of actual paraplegics.

(I can't find that bit on YouTube right now :( My Google-Fu fails me.)

I think about the Bill Burr bit (NSFW):

It's from Jefferies "Bare" special on Netflix:
I wanted a person with muscular dystrophy to make it look authentic, and the Actors’ Union of America said, “You cannot do that.” Because basically the problem is people with muscular dystrophy, I think, are only allowed to work for two hours a day before they get too tired. And I said, “All right, what other disabilities and diseases are allowed to work longer?” And they sent me a list. And on this list, I said, “Can you get rid of all the contagious ones? And what have we got left?” So I saw every disabled actor in Hollywood, and I’ll be honest with you, not that many of them. I don’t know why. Maybe they’re just lazy. They don’t wanna work. Maybe they give up on their dreams rather quickly. And none of them were very good, either. Everyone we saw, none of them were very good ’cause acting is all about what you do with your hands. None of them knew what to do with their hands, and… they all came in. Until this one guy came in. I had seen a lot of people that day. This guy was the most disabled person I’d ever seen in my life. He was like… Think of the most disabled person you’ve seen, then double it. …really super disabled. He was shaped like a pretzel. He was being carried in by this big Russian nurse, carried him in. He made that great disabled sound of… [Groans] That one. I just loved him. Anyway… so he comes in for the audition… and I’m sitting there, and we’re doing the lines together, and at first, I didn’t know if he was mentally all there either, so I was being a little bit patronizing. I was going, “Thank you so much for coming in.” And then we did the dialog together, and I didn’t have to worry about a thing. This kid was funny. He was smart. His timing was impeccable. I thought he was just great, and I helped him out of the room, and I come back to the director and I said, “That’s our guy. That’s who we gotta pick.” And he agreed, but we had to see everyone else who was still in the waiting room. So the next bloke wheels himself in. Now, obviously, he’s just a paraplegic if he’s wheeling himself in, which means the waist down, and that didn’t really suit me because… paraplegics can get themselves to a hooker without my assistance. But I thought… “If he’s a good enough actor, maybe he can quad-up for the role.” So he comes in… He comes in, I shake his hand, and his leg slightly comes out at the same time. And I went, “Whoa! What’s going on there, kicky?” And he goes… “Oh, you got me! I’m not disabled.” And I said, “You’re ****ing what now?” And he goes, “I’m not disabled. I just really wanted the role, so I rented a wheelchair.” And I said, “Just shut up. So let me… This is how your day has mapped-out thus far. You woke up this morning. You drove to the wheelchair rental place. You rented a wheelchair. You carried it out, I assume. You put it in the trunk of your car. You drove here. You got the wheelchair out. You carried it up three flights of stairs. You went to the waiting room. You put it down next to the severely disabled man and his nurse. Then you sat in it and practiced your lines.” And he went… “Yeah.” And I said, “You’re a ****ing *******, mate. Get the **** out of here.” And I kicked him out. And later on that day, I’m sitting there with all the headshots of all the different actors I’m gonna call to tell them they’ve got parts, and I’m holding this disabled guy’s headshot, and I just think, “I’m gonna call this guy up. I’m gonna change his life. This is an awesome moment, right?” And I’m looking at it, and he looks super handsome in his headshot. He looked really like… And I thought, “This has gotta be the greatest photographer with the fastest shutter in camera history.” The shutter on his camera has gotta be like… [Mimicking camera shutter] Like… [Audience applauding] And then I read the guy’s biography… and then it dawned on me. “This guy’s not disabled either! I hated the other ****er for renting a wheelchair! This **** rented a nurse!” Do you wanna know the level of ****ing psychosis you have to go through to rent a ****ing nurse? I’m all for a method actor. Get into character three hours before, but once you finish the audition, stand up and go, “Ta-da!” And we would have gone, “That was very good.” But I’ll tell you what you don’t do. Don’t make me carry you to your car! I carried him down three flights of stairs going, “You did very good.” He’s like, “Thank you, Jim.” [Laughing]

I really enjoyed this film. Yes it is cliche but I really liked it.

Netflix has blues brother on..... just reaffirmed it as The Great American movie. It has it all. Covered.

Re: Movies 51 - Rise of the Frozen Joker: Chapter II: Dark Fate

Episode 9 was not garbage, but not great either.

I get the situation, but JJ doesn't seem to understand the phrase "Show, don't tell" I felt that the first 45 minutes was Exposition Dump: The Movie. You also just have things mentioned in passing that are HUGE and just have to run with it. Overall the narrative was VERY predictable, but the ending did serve the purpose, so it gets a passing grade. I can see why the internet is in a tizzy over this. As people see the movie, I do feel that word of mouth will kill the run of this movie and that it will have to earn all of it's money by New Year's Day.

LOL. All the people who lost their minds about Episode 8 got EXACTLY what they wanted in Episode 9. They have no one to blame but themselves.
