Minnesotans Arguing About the Weather IV: Niño or Niña, My Joints Stopped Trying

When I lived in Bahrain it was not uncommon to have a heat index of 120 or higher. Funny how an island country even in the Middle East can get pounded in the rear by humidity.

My understanding is that in that part of the globe, despite being "desert", there is actually a metric crap ton of moisture in the air. So when it heats up, things get very tropical. Along with that, you don't see a fall in temps once the sun goes down either. Like lows in the 80s are super common.

There was a roughly 30-day stretch when the high was not lower than 100, and it rained for about an hour in 12 months. In total.

How are you so impossibly old and hadn't heard of a heat index?

It was developed when I was 16. I should definitely have heard of it. I guess it's just a wet bulb reading; that I knew.

I think it's because I haven't lived any place I'd ever want to know. In Ithaca and Portland and Phoenix and Chapel Hill it didn't matter, and in DC you're already in hell without it.

I remember reading about how humid it is there and thinking, "so, heat like Arizona, humidity like Mississippi -- no thank you."

I think the storms earlier this week and then the line that came through earlier this evening was all the stress Xcel’s lines could take. We lost power about one hour ago. Thankfully, they gave an estimate of around 10:30 (two-hour outage), and we’re not in sweltering heat tonight.

About 2:00PM an area near me lost power again. I was walking back from a park with the kiddo and we heard a loud thud followed closely by that recognizable bussing arcing sound. A big limb likely weakened from the storms earlier in the week finally came down on some lines. Seemed to stop on the other side of the street from us so we didn’t lose power four times in three days.

A lot of businesses (including mine) shut down from noon to 2 and so we'd often go out for lunch, and a funny thing is that I got used to walking around during the day in a full suit and being fine with it. But I do not miss that at all.

Wait until he hears about wet-bulb globe temperature.

Wet bulb globe temperature is the the dumbest of them all.

Wet bulb temperature is a real thing, can be calculated rather than vibed, and has a real applicability.

wet bulb globe temp has weird factors like solar radiation, wind, etc. which may or may not be applicable. Wet bulb is just the plus t at which sweating ceases to be useful and you begin dying.

We never even had the lights flicker, though we only had it bad for about half an hour yesterday.

so…the 10:30 return to service time ended up being 10:15AM, almost 14 hours of no service. We have some fridge restocking to do. :(

This really infuriates me when it happens because my boomer parents instilled in me that there’s few things worse in the world than throwing out food. So, I do my best to look for a silver lining to try and counteract this.

1. Fridge cleaning! Feels good to scrub the shelves and start over. This time I’ll keep things organized! (A obvious lie but in the moment telling yourself this feels good)
2. Freezer should be good at least, provided it was somewhat full and never opened.

We keep the freezer full with extra bottles of water or freezer packs. Move them into the fridge as necessary when we need space.

I'm the same way with food. It hurts me to my core throwing it away. I'm a little better now that we can compost it with the city. But I still get so upset with myself when we have to toss good food into the compost.
