Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

This probably belongs in The Lounge but what the heck.

Dennis drowned in 1983 but the rest of the band is still there for this performance at Live Aid 1985, including for this show an appearance by the ever enigmatic and slightly spaced out looking Brian.

I first became a fan of Ronda and of hockey of the feminine variety when Ronda was playing for Roseville Area High School. There was a group of fans at the Roseville Arena who would occasionally break into song.

Scratch it, Carl, scratch it!

The latest from the Gopher Women's Hockey Examiner (via Facebook)...

Q & A with Lyndsay Wall

As I mentioned on the Facebook page where I first saw this link, I wasn't happy with Lyndsay's departure from the U. There has always been speculation about that, and her not graduating from the U. just fuels it. Still, she was a great player to watch, and I appreciate her time in the both the Maroon & Gold and the Red, White & Blue.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

Lyndsay Wall- I had a blast my two seasons with the Gophers. I couldn't have asked for better coaches or teammates.
JE- Why did you only play the two seasons?

LW- I decided that I was burnt out from hockey. Between the Olympic team and the Gophers I hardly anytime for myself.
One full season and half of another actually IIRC.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

Also:

JE - If there was one thing you could change about your time in Minnesota, what would it be?

Lindsay Wall - I would stick out my entire time instead of leaving early. It wasn't fair to my coaches or teammates.

Very interesting and honest comment, and also valuable advice for any player contemplating leaving school early. Sticking it out and getting your degree, even if you decide to give up hockey, means not having similar regrets later on.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

Because your comments in the WCHA thread are pretty Gopher specific:
The May/Kortum/Jones line was a nice line last season. I wonder if you might try to plug someone into Jones' spot for 2010-2011 keeping May & Kortum together?
I wouldn't make that a priority. That line went as Jones went. It didn't seem that Kortum and May possessed a chemistry together that stood out. I don't know that keeping West and Erickson together is a given either. West and Schoullis had some good moments together a couple of years ago, so that might be a possibility.

If we consider returning forwards and the highest line on which each has skated a regular shift at some point, I'd say we have: West (1st), Erickson (1st), Schoullis (1st), May (2nd), Kortum (2nd), Rasmussen (3rd), Downey (3rd), and Ludwigson (4th). Adding in Davis, Kessel, Brausen, Terry, Turgeon, and maybe Steenerson, it seems apparent that some returning forwards will play down a line or two at times from their previous highest line.

I dunno, I'd have to give May a little more credit per influence on the lines play than saying they went as Jones went (in a strict sense) might indicate.

Wouldn't be surprised to see this become more the case as the season progresses. You would expect the coach to give the nod to the upperclassmen at the beginning, and then as the season progresses start to reward those freshmen who show they deserve to move up. It will be very interesting to watch how this plays out.

IMO, Jones was more up-and-down than May was last season. Jones was on fire during October; so was that line. She slumped perceptibly at the end of 2009, and the line's scoring stopped and didn't resume until Jones got it going again. I didn't see evidence of any special magic between May and Kortum to carry them through those stretches. Not saying they can't play together this year, but I wouldn't plan around it.

Combining seven returning forwards who were 3rd line or above and the opinions stated earlier in this thread that Kessel and Davis are the first year players who are at least pre-season favorites to earn regular ice time adds up to nine.

Are these the three lines for September 26 against Manitoba?

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

I think you'd definitely have to throw Miss Terry into the mix too.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

You like Canadians? Ok. Here we go.:)
Pardon me for not having followed along, but what exactly does this mean?

Of course we like Canadians.

Brittany Francis.

Bobbi Ross.

And in the formative years, one of the greatest Gophers ever, Nadine Muzerall.

What exactly was the question here?

I doubt that. I'd guess that we will at a minimum see 4 lines in the exhibition, provided enough people are healthy. I remember that when we had the season-opening exhibition vs the US Select or whatever the Blaine centralization team was called a couple years ago, everybody dressed, even though that added up to more than 18 skaters. We might see 4 lines where it is tough to tell which line is 3rd or 4th, and then form lines going forward based on how they practice and perform in that exhibition. I don't think Turgeon was recruited to sit on the Gopher bench, and Brausen has a lot of game. I've never seen Terry or Stenerson, but I imagine they can play as well. As others have pointed out, for any given game, not everyone can play. I don't think it is a given that those with the experience are the favorites going into the season.

This is an excellent observation. Those who have been following along will know that I like Brausen a lot and I totally agree about Turgeon. The offspring of a former number 1 doesn't look to me like a candidate for the pines.

And I like your view of four lines for Manitoba.

Still, for October 1 in Potsdam?

Might not those nine be the front runners?

Except for a select few, I totally agree.

Expect some surprises, especially after a few games have been played!

Sure hope the depth at forward works to their advantage; with competitive athletes, it normally does.

I'm just wondering how the Manitoba game is going to work out with the "always on" icing. While it didn't get approved overall, it's still "experimental" for this season and next, meaning that it will be used for exhibition games such as this one.

Good point Dave.

But I expect that Minnesota is going to be enough better than Manitoba that the "icing experiment" will be just that, an experiment. I don't expect that it will be a significant factor in the game.

I will be extremely, read that as EXTREMELY disappointed in the Gophers if I am wrong.

Isn't it great to be actually discussing hockey?
