Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

Or maybe she wanted #7 all along, a number owned by Kelli Blankenship for the last 4 years.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

Also noticed that Katie Frischmann is listed as a D (not F/D) so the 6th spot may boil down to her and Ashley Stenerson, who I hear will be trying out for D. However it turns out, having a 7th in case of injury, etc. is always nice to have. Excluding these two, I count 14 forwards so there should be plenty of competition there as well...

Competition is good in practice but the downside is the creation of healthy scratches for games. Those are tough decisions for the staff and the athletes involved....the past couple years has been easy dressing all skaters, even if ice time may have been limited.

Goalkeepers have special situations, and I admire them and their attitude and their families because of how well they handle it.

Go Gophs!

I know on the mens' side that is exactly what Coach Lucia is shooting for. Last year they had injuries and some other issues and for some games they did not have enough players. And for a few of the guys maybe a little complacency and/or some fatigue set in. Not saying that will happen with the women but having a few extra will help ensure that it doesn't.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

Murphy seems to have a law that says if you have extra players, you tend to suffer fewer injuries than if you have a short roster. One can plan to have exactly 18 skaters in the hope that it will work out perfectly, but that is not reality. The first injury on D or at forward means it is impossible to skate 3 pairs or 4 lines respectively. Then there are weeks like the whatever-it's-called-these-days Cup for the Canadian U-22 team and Team Finland in January, and even a healthy team needs extra players. Plus we have seen in many past seasons that someone's name on the roster in June doesn't guarantee that they'll still be a team member in November.

The only year where I thought we obviously had too many skaters was in 2000-2001. There was one extra in 2004-2005, but while those on the end of the depth chart didn't love their role, I think they better understood it. It was a little bit more of an issue in 2008-2009 with two extras where many players and fans were left scratching their heads regarding decisions about who dressed/played and who didn't. It is easier for the players when everyone can dress, but it is paramount that the coaching staff is consistent, fair, and communicates well once the roster grows.

From the GWH facebook page:

Minnesota Women's Hockey Assistant coach Jamie Wood has accepted an associate head coaching job at New Hampshire. We will all miss Jamie, but wish him all the best at UNH.

Her profile as one of the coaches is back up on GopherSports.com. http://www.gophersports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=38866&SPID=3323&DB_OEM_ID=8400&ATCLID=1552563&Q_SEASON=2010

Thanks to the Gopher Women's Hockey Examiner for the heads-up on Facebook.

Gophers release their schedule for the upcoming year. Non-conference is Clarkson, Maine, Wayne State and Harvard.

I'm curious as to why the second game of every series is at 4 o'clock (4:07 to be exact) or earlier. That's only occurred for Friday/Saturday series in past years when the men's hockey team also had a home series, and I can't imagine the two teams having schedules that align that much.

Also interesting that the two series against St. Cloud will not be home-and-home but rather two at the NHC in October and two at Ridder in February. That appears to have happened to avoid conflicting with a Gopher football home game (vs. Penn State).

And a Friday-Sunday on Thanksgiving weekend to avoid the Gopher football game at home vs. Iowa. Yuck.

I'll miss the home & home series' with the Huskies...I rather liked making one drive per weekend vs. SCSU.

I don't really like the early 2nd game starts after a late Friday game all that much...wonder what the players think of that?

Where's the TCF Bank Stadium game? Oh well...maybe in 2011-2012. I can wait. ;)

I believe that there are at least two reasons for this. One is to facilitate the road team traveling home and getting an earlier start at the end of the series. The other reason is that Frosty doesn't like late starts on Saturday because he feels the players have to wait around all day to play the game with nothing to do. Or maybe he just wants to get home and see his kids a little earlier.:D

Most importantly...I can make Chipotle for my after game burrito on Saturdays...before they close. Been really close on those 7:00PM starts.

10:00PM close...:(
I don't think any of the > 40 Chipotles around the Twin Cities stay open beyond 10, and some closings are earlier -- Sunday nights or special cases like the Skyway location.
