Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

I don't think any of the > 40 Chipotles around the Twin Cities stay open beyond 10, and some closings are earlier -- Sunday nights or special cases like the Skyway location.

On a Saturday? Do they roll up the sidewalks in Minny too? :(

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

Visited my first Chipotle restaurant in Rochester (twice....mmmm!) last year and weren't suprised by how many college students were there judging from the low prices.

Finally got a few popping up in Calgary, although they run under Mucho Burrito name here and I'm not suprised how many university kids aren't there as the price for a Burrito is double!

I'm mad as hell...So I've only been there like..7 times this month!

mmmm! :)

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey: Off Season 2010

But if I were to guess, I'd bet that none of the cuts will be from the athletic department.

When my grandfather passed away, the athletic department's policy was that season tickets (in this case, for football) were not transferable through inheritance, yet the U. kept asking for money from the estate. So my father protested, and the first response from the athletic department was that they weren't affiliated with any academic departments that might be asking for money.

(My father's reply to that was "What's the first three words in the name of your department?" He ran his complaint up the flagpole to the Office of the President, and got the athletic department to acquiesce.)

Coaching update...

http://www.gophersports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=8400&ATCLID=204960377

University of Minnesota women’s hockey head coach Brad Frost has announced the hiring of Joel Johnson as an assistant coach. Johnson, who was the head coach of the Bethel University men’s hockey team, returns to the Gopher staff where he was an assistant coach during the Golden Gophers’ 2000 and 2004 national championship runs. He replaces Jamie Wood, who accepted an associate head coaching position at the University of New Hampshire. Johnson begins his duties immediately.

New release on GopherSports.com...

Six Gophers Named to U.S. Under-22 Team

Six University of Minnesota student athletes have been named to the United States Under-22 Team, announced today by USA Hockey. The Gopher six, along with 16 other individuals, will compete against Canada in August. Megan Bozek (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), Sarah Erickson (Roseau, Minn.), Amanda Kessel (Madison, Wis.), Anne Schleper (St. Cloud, Minn.), Jen Schoullis (Erie, Pa.) and Emily West (Colorado Springs, Colo.) have all been named to the team. The 2010 team marks the first appearances to the Under-22 Team for Bozek, Erickson, Kessel and Schoullis, the second time for West and Schleper. The Minnesota contingent is the largest group from one school.

Let 'em know what you see happening during the coming season...still weighing my responses. ;)

Number One- Who will make the most impact in their first year as a Gopher? (Freshman are: Ashley Stenerson, Liz Turgeon, Amanda Kessel, Kelly Terry, Baylee Gillanders, Sarah Davis, and Bethany Brausen.)
...that's a tough one right off the bat...hope this doesn't get any harder.

I'll say it again...tough call with as many capable of having a big impact among the members of this group. Miss Kessel would be a very logical pick. From what I hear Terry and Davis are capable of serious impact. Heck...Turgeon or Brausen on the right line...

Oh alright...I'll go with Davis here. However, I think there will be three / four strong contenders.

Who will win the WCHA? I will answer these questions in my next column by the way, but I 'd like to hear what you think here.
Another tie...UM and UMD. I know many think UMD is the considerable favorite, but Noora rules! ;)

Or it could come down to how many games UMD has to forfeit.

Who will lead the Gophers? That means who will be the go-to girl, so to speak.
Emily West. Big campaign for Westy...stay healthy.

Do you believe the Gophers have the talent to win it all? If yes, does anything less than a title fall on the coaches shoulders?
Yes I do believe. Probably not...yet if that's the unlikely season outcome, they may share some of that responsibility.

Who will have a break out year? One girl that really makes herself known through her play.
#11...#19 will continue to impress even more.

Who is the biggest threat to stop the Gophers in their quest for another WCHA title? NCAA title?
There's a bunch of 'em. UMD & UW in the WCHA...Clarkson, Cornell, Mercyhurst...and others still.

Who is the best coach in the WCHA? In all of women's college hockey? If it's not Brad Frost, that's ok, it's your opinion.
Mark Johnson and Shannon Miller...co-best coaches in division I.

What is the toughest game (or series) the Gophers have this year?
Do you think that schedule is even tough? Or is the toughest game in a tournament or NCAA final?
The series' with UMD will probably be the toughest. Wisconsin will be nearly equally difficult in the WCHA I'd guess. When it comes to the NCAA tournament...the level of play in the 2009-2010 tournament was completely amazing IMO...if you're there, all those games are extremely tough. No matter how good you play, the competition is such that it most often takes a lucky break to win it. The conference schedule is a very difficult grind.

How will be the best female player? (Kazmaier winner)
Noora rules and could win it. Probably, Agosta gets hers.

And let's hear your predictions....Who wins the WCHA? Who wins it all?
Finally, an easy one. Gophers and Gophers.

Very tough to predict, especially without knowing the skills of several incoming recruits. Obviously I hope all of them make an impact in their freshman year, but having seen Kessel play a number of times, I'll go with her.

In hockey, consistent goaltending is always so important in winning your conference championship, and the U of M definitely has the advantage here. Assuming Noora regains the form that she displayed in her pre-Olympic experience, I agree that the Gophers will come out on top in regular season play.

Emily West. Big campaign for Westy...stay healthy.

No question...as the team's leading scorer she is the key on whoever ends up playing with her on the first line. She and her linemates need to produce big time offensively while also playing solid D.

Yes I do believe. Probably not...yet if that's the unlikely season outcome, they may share some of that responsibility.

I don't like putting all of the responsibility on the coaches' shoulders. They can put all of the pieces together but in the end it's up to the players to win the games on the ice. That said, all of the pieces seem to be in place for a very successful season. On paper at least, this team appears to have more raw talent than last year's squad.

#11...#19 will continue to impress even more.

Sure hope you're right on #11, she definitely has the talent to play more of a key role in the team's success...also hope Bozek continues to improve on her very successful freshman season.

There's a bunch of 'em. UMD & UW in the WCHA...Clarkson, Cornell, Mercyhurst...and others still.

The WCHA will be a major challenge to be sure...the key will be to focus on each opponent and continue to improve in all facets of the game. If they do this they'll be ready for the post-season when the time comes.

Mark Johnson and Shannon Miller...co-best coaches in division I.

Past tense and reputation only...Brad Frost will surprise and be named Coach of the Year!

The series' with UMD will probably be the toughest. Wisconsin will be nearly equally difficult in the WCHA I'd guess. No matter how good you play, the competition is such that it most often takes a lucky break to win it. The conference schedule is a very difficult grind.

Agreed on all counts. The regular WCHA season will pose an even greater challenge than in year's past, and they can't look past anybody. If they continue to improve as a team throughout the season, they will be well-positioned to make a good run at winning the NCAA championship.

Noora rules and could win it. Probably, Agosta gets hers.

Way to early to make the call! I'm hoping for West or Noora.

Finally, an easy one. Gophers and Gophers.

I know you're being a little facetious here, but if I know anything at all, it won't be easy!

I have not seen Stenerson, Turgeon or Brausen play, but I have seen all of the other recruits several times over 2 or more seasons. I will assume that if those who have seen the other American girls believe Kessel is the best of these, I would not be at all surprised. She is excellent.

Are any of the Canadian girls as good or better? Tough to say when you don't necessary see them head to head. I would say however, that of the Canadians, Davis is most certainly the best of them.

Which means it would be between Kessel and Davis as #1.
