Minnesota hosts Denver 3/1 & 3/2

Re: Minnesota hosts Denver 3/1 & 3/2

In more than a few Gopher games that I've watched, they don't seem to play with consistent urgency till near the end. The UAA game comes to mind. The game at Soldier. The game they lost to Jan a couple of weeks ago.

That's a recipe for an early exit in the NCAAs.

It is baffling coz when they're firing on all cylinders, they look like men against boys.

I'm sure they're thinking, and you fans are hoping, that they'll be able to turn it on for the playoffs an do it for 60 minutes on a consistent basis. That's not the best formula though.

Great game to attend from a Pio fan perspective. From my seat on the ice I didn't think the Gopher effort was quite as bad as you Minny fans seem to think it was. I will say, however, that their seeming unwillingness to put the puck on the net was, at times, baffling. A great night for my first time in Mariucci.

I think the Gophers played poorly, but part of that for sure was how well Denver played. They completely controlled the neutral zone, frustrated and confused the Gophers on their power play, blocked a lot of shots, held the Gophers to the outside, and had really solid goaltending.

Pretty spot on analysis I must say. I know they probably don't actually think this, but sometimes I get the impression that they think they just have to show up to win. And when they fall behind, they have to try and flip the switch mid-game. Hard to do against weak teams, and difficult as hell to do against a good team like Denver.

You don't watch enough Gopher games. When they're on their game, it's night and day compared to tonight.

DU played well so that should not be discounted. The Gophers were uninspired - passing was off, they could NOT get pucks to the net to save their life and spent way too much time on the perimiter instead of driving the net. All a a recipe for a loss.

Hoping they figure it out not only tomorrow, but also for an entire weekend against BSU.

Agreed. I don't mean to take anything away from DU. However, at the same time, MN didn't even look like a hockey team tonight.

Wasn't there a North Dakota poster that basically got crucified by Gopher fans for saying the same things after UND got spanked by Minnesota?

The only voice of reason is JDUBBS1280. Denver played well, dictated play, and forced Minnesota into most of their mistakes. I was not expecting this result tonight. Here's to a much better game tomorrow night.

Was it their "worst game of the year?" :p

But f* UND. ;) And depends on who the Gopher fans were.

I said on GPL, MN likes to look pretty, and then teams like WI (trap) and DU come in, peel off that makeup, and reveal what we really look like. Exaggeration? Yes. But there is some truth in there.

Edit: Gurt: that was the worst I've seen them in the past I dunno how many years.

I HATE HATE HATE pretty hockey... shoot the **** puck on net and crash the net... It really is that simple. But for some reason, MN thinks they can always go for that pretty play instead of getting dirty.

White Men Can't Jump. That's the quote I'm referencing from, and it's so true with the Gophers.

I only saw maybe 10-15 minutes, but it was obvious they were out of synch.

I did see Helge nearly snap that Pio's neck after the goal though. How'd you guys get him over UND? :D

We showed him our receipts from paying off the refs. :D

This is funny because you could also be describing DU. They have been so up and down all year. The one thing that seems to be improving as we head to the second season is the D. I expect the Gophs to come out and dominate tomorrow night just like the Greenies did at Magness last Saturday. Hope we get another shot at you guys in a couple of weeks at the X.

DU suffers from this disease as well. I always think of it as a coaching issue. These teams are just swimming in talent and if you leave the kids to their own devices they'll go Hollywood pretty often. Tonight is a good illustration of your point. The game winner was a bounce off a skate when two high scoring teams face off in the last month of the season. A good coaching staff is drilling this right now. Most (not all) Feb/March games are low scoring. Put the puck on net and crash, crash crash!

Man, this time of year is killer. You have to show up and be on it. If not, the other team will take you down. Harvard (one of the worst teams in D-1) knocked off the "#1 team" in the country, Air Force came from 2 down to knock off Viagra. DU was strong on D and in net from what I heard (mostly D). Given that the Gophs first and second line (and therefore PP also) took the night off it was almost a free pass for DU. Very similar to last Friday for us against UND. UND looked like crap on Friday and DU held on for a narrow victory (which is what tonight was). On Saturday UND turned it around and DU looked like **** (especially in the 3rd). I was especially impressed by the adjustments they made on their kill. Keep in mind that a split is considered to be the equivalent of batting over .300.
