Minnesota hosts Denver 3/1 & 3/2

Re: Minnesota hosts Denver 3/1 & 3/2

I think the Gophers played poorly, but part of that for sure was how well Denver played. They completely controlled the neutral zone, frustrated and confused the Gophers on their power play, blocked a lot of shots, held the Gophers to the outside, and had really solid goaltending.

Denver is the best coached team, night in and night out, in the WCHA, IMO, and there aren't many in the country better.

After talking with the team post-game:

"They may not feel better, but I do." --tDon

Good.

BTN is replaying last night's game at 10AM ET this morning, 5 minutes from now.

Re: Minnesota hosts Denver 3/1 & 3/2

This is funny because you could also be describing DU. They have been so up and down all year.

Yeah...but with the talent and experience of the Gophers that should just not be happening. They were a top 5 team last year, really didn't lose anyone...and based on last year they still are turning in clunkers. If their going to turn in 4 shot periods and zero goals that they would just get blown out. At 2-3-1 in the last 6, he team needs to be embarrassed...otherwise they'll catch the periodic Gopher disease of feeling that they can somehow get by on talent in the last five minutes.

I am at a loss for words after last night's performance.

I can only imagine the hundreds of thousands of goof fans at home watching feel the same way except that its Friday night in Minneapolis so they were probably out doing something exciting (except Brent of course).

Well, there is a lot more to do there than most other places.

To say they didn't lose anything is wrong. They lost arguably two of the better leaders and captains the program has seen for quite some time (Matson and Hansen). Games like last night (and most of their recent flops) didn't happen as often last year because those two wouldn't allow it. They either said something or took it upon themselves to change the direction of the game with a great shift. Sure this years team is more talented, but in this game talent isn't everything. Matson and Hansen were successful and created a successful atmosphere through their unwillingness to quit and unrelenting work ethic both on and off the ice. Until this years team finds someone to fill that hole, or someone steps up and tells the team to get on his back I fear the season could fall short of expectations.

For sure they didn't want to be known as one of the only classes or class never to have made the NCAA.

Re: Minnesota hosts Denver 3/1 & 3/2

The Gophers were not mentally prepared to play this game tonight from the puck drop. A very poor effort in all facets of the game and especially by the top lines tonight. There was basically no sense of urgency to the Gophers game, they couldn't setup in the zone, lost puck battles, key guys gave up uncharacteristic turnovers...an absolute stinker of a performance by the Gophers tonight. The only Gopher line that looked decent tonight was the 3rd line...Serratore, Boyd and Ambroz. Even the PP stunk up Mariucci tonight...and for the first time this season the Gophers were actually outshot 8-2 on their 5 PP opportunities...that's a mind boggling stat from the #2 PP in the nation. Adam Wilcox appeared steady tonight and unfortunately let one in off a skate in front...flukey goal IMO. But overall, a complete crap in the pants by the Gophers tonight.

Credit DU for a good defensive effort and Olkinuora was consistent in net for DU. Heard this stat...Gwoz is now the winningest coach ever against the Gophers...wow.

It goes without saying, the Gophers probably lost any remaining opportunity for the Mac tonight. To show up at this stage of the season with a pitiful effort like this and then get shutout on home ice, the Gophers obviously have some serious soul searching to do if they want to go deep in the playoffs. Unless they can do a complete 180 and learn to string two complete games together, Gopher fans might want to prepare for a letdown in postseason expectations. This team is not good right now and haven't been consistent over the past several weeks. I expect they will come out with a better effort tomorrow night, can't really get much worse than what we saw tonight.
I think you are the first Minnesota fan to grant ANY credit to DU. :) I was only able to listen to the game, but when every Minnesota fan, including several that I know are usually quick to give credit where it's due, blame the loss squarely on poor Minnesota play, then I tend to suspect that there's something to that. :) And to Harley's point, this was a series that I could see a cocky, confident team taking for granted. I'm just glad that DU at least showed that they aren't a team to take for granted. There is definitely something to be said for that. It gives me some measure of confidence that they might play with enough pride for the next couple of weeks for me to see them play at the X.

Re: Minnesota hosts Denver 3/1 & 3/2

Has anyone seen Bjugstads hands lately? They seem to MIA. He can't catch a pass, can't stick handle without losing the puck. Just brutal.
