Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

The more I watched Megan Bozek over her college career, the more I came to appreciate her tremendous ability and what she meant to the Gophers, especially this past season...
Best of luck to her when she moves on to represent the U.S.A. in the Worlds and then in the Olympics.
That's the problem with giving individual awards in a team sport. There haven't been many offensive linemen winning MVP awards, but it is tough to win without good ones. We've been lucky enough to watch some great defensemen in the short history of GWH, and Megan's numbers speak for themselves, but she'll be missed just as much for the off-ice contributions she made to the "U". She's first class all the way.

Was there any thought given to spreading this honor a bit further and naming the "Tri-Players of the Year"? The more I watched Megan Bozek over her college career, the more I came to appreciate her tremendous ability and what she meant to the Gophers, especially this past season.
Agree 100%. I don't think I would have believed it possible but I think she took it to yet another, even more impressive level in the post season.

It's a shame they don't give a separate award to the nation's best defenseman, because she would be the most deserving.
Honestly, have thought this was a great idea for a long time. I know where I first heard the suggestion...could be the same place you did, but I think USCHO could run with it. ;)

Best of luck to her when she moves on to represent the U.S.A. in the Worlds and then in the Olympics.
Agreed once again.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Strongly agree with the Megan Bozek kudos. She's been my favorite Gopher for a long time. Considering the other players on your team, that's really saying something.

In Buckeye posts, I've talked of having "a feeling of well being" when our Schmitt Sisters are on the ice. The equivalent feeling for Bozek must be one of sheer ecstacy!

Belated congratulations to everyone connected to the Minnesota program for the perfect season. As it happened, I was able to make it to Mpls. for the Frozen Four. Wore OSU gear on Friday, WCHA gear on Sunday. What a great weekend not only for the U of M, but for the entire sport. So in addition to the congrats, a sincere thanks.

I'd say that was more true with Bozek a couple of years ago. I remember a series in Bemidji where she didn't dress for game one, and the Gophers lost and looked like crap. The next day she was back, and suddenly our entire blue line looked so much more solid. This season, while Bozek was obviously improved from her sophomore level, there really wasn't much of a drop off no matter which pair of "D" was on the ice. Outside of the NCAA quarterfinal where it looked like McMillen had a case of the yips, it was a steady year back there. Regarding #13, I saw the same thing at the 2009 Frozen Four when Seeler and Schleper suddenly looked like rookies after playing so well all season. Bozek was obviously special, and we will miss her immensely. I think her aggressiveness early in the final really helped to set the tone for the game.

I wish you'd let us know you were in the building; it would have been great to meet you. Next time!

In a way, it was a humbling season to get to watch. Definitely a case of even with great parts, the whole can be more than its sum. I really believe that the off-ice chemistry enabled the on-ice achievements. The challenge for the returning players will be to capture some semblance of that moving forward.

Very tall order, but they do have a solid foundation from which to build. And similarly for us fans, it will be a very tall order to not let our expectations get ahead of themselves.

Makes sense. Rooting for the WCHA/Gophers over the weekend, none of the MN D pairs made me nervous. The feeling was more like: Cool, Megan's out there, maybe something big will happen. But the other D did just fine.

Agreed. On the rushes, the big shots and just good old fashioned defense, her determination was contagious.

Yup, should have spoken up. Non-hockey circumstances have made me a bit of a last minute planner this year. While I did have a ticket in hand on a timely basis, I wasn't 100% sure I was making the trip until the last minute. Will do better next time.

To the extent Bozek taught by example, the lessons will remain learned. Replacing her dynamic presence will be more of a challenge. There may be a few of those on-ice yips until everyone settles into their new roles.

I do not know how to load it, but there was a great little piece on Chanel 5 last night about the Gophers takeing the National Championship Trophy for a little ride around Dinkytown.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Thank you for sharing the story. It doesn't translate 100 percent accurately -- the resulting English translation has some masculine pronouns in referring to Noora and there are times when my guess is the meaning was that something looked to "not be possible", but the not is lost. Still, it was a good read and contained information on her future plans that I didn't know.

Please keep us updated on Noora as she trains for the Olympics and where she decides to live and work after the Olympics are over.

One of the great things about an event like the Frozen Four last weekend was all of the former Gophers and their parents that made it back to Ridder to support the team. I realize that will be harder for people like Noora and Mira, but then I didn't necessarily foresee having Muzzy on staff some day, so one never knows what the future holds.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

So a good number of Gophers on the roster for Worlds. Erickson, Kessel, Schoullis, Bozek, Marvin, Schleper, and Stecklein. I am encouraged by the presence of Lee, because D that are good at playing defense have been in too short supply on some past rosters. Congratulations to all of those chosen and best of luck at the tournament.

Was reviewing the highlights from the final. I'll be darned if I didn't see a little Minnesota Hockey from the US squad.

Some good photo shoots around the internet with the team at Ridder with the Governor, at Target Field and Xcel EC for recognition by the Twins and Wild organizations.

Normally I'd wait for the past winter's snow to disappear...but since that might not happen before the 2013-2014 season begins...

Player....................Position ...............(Current Team) .......................Hometown

(Based on reliable info, but to paraphrase Yogi, "It ain't official 'til it's official.")
* Denotes commitments are official, as announced by the school

Minnesota*
Dani Cameranesi .................F....................(USA 18s/Blake) ..............................Plymouth, MN
Kelsey Cline .......................D ...............(Bloomington Jefferson) ....................Bloomington, MN
Kate Flug ...........................F ................(USA 18s/Roseville) .............................Roseville, MN
Paige Haley ........................D ...................(Red Wing HS) ...............................Red Wing, MN
Sidney Peters ....................G .............USA 18s/Chicago Mission) ...........................Geneva, IL
Kate Schipper ....................F....................(USA 18s/Breck) ........................Brooklyn Park, MN
Megan Wolfe .....................F .........................(Eagan) ........................................Eagan, MN

Forwards: Cameranisi, Flug, Schipper, Wolfe, Davis, Terry, Menefee, Bona, Brausen, Garzone, Lorence & Brandt.

Certain assumptions here that could prove erroneous.

Defense: Cline, Haley, Stecklein, Ramsey, McMillen, Burns & Gillanders.

More potential incorrect assumptions here. I have heard Jordyn Burns will move to D primarily for 2013-2014.

Goal: Peters, Sletta & Leveille

By no means should this post signal an end to celebration, merrymaking or general review per the epic, miraculous, history making 2012-2013 GWH NCAA championship season.
