Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

How about starting a 2013-14 thread?

No one wants all the good karma of the past season to end. (that, and there are only 162 posts on this thread)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

I think we should try to make it all the way thru the 2013-14 Women's D1 Hockey season without ever mentioning the Gophers on this forum. I'm in....who's with me?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Could be talking about them a ton when they're right around .500 going into November...

Doubtful. A reasonable guess would have their record going into November at 6-2. That would include their difficult series with Wisconsin at home and UMD in Duluth.

Better hope #22 stays healthy or scoring will be a major issue. Frost got a huge break with her being snubbed for Sochi.

The 2013-2014 GWH roster isn't void of players capable of scoring...beyond Hannah Brandt, that is. Obviously everyone staying healthy and in the lineup will be key for best success. Much as it is for any season.

Edit: On another note...'bout time we had a look at those UW and UND rosters isn't it?

If I had to guess, I'd expect more struggles defensively rather than offensively. Up front, the Gophers project to have fewer holes to fill than coming into last season. Kessel obviously leaves a mammoth void, but beyond that, Kortum is the only other loss from the team's top 10 forwards. A year ago, three of the players from the top two lines had graduated. All of the rookie forwards have been scorers in their careers previously and had US U-18 experience.

On the other hand, three of the six D are gone, and two of the returners, Ramsey and McMillen, are stronger offensively than defensively. The team won't approach the 216 goals scored last season, or even the 181 of the one before, but the big drop will be from the defensive effort that limited opponents to 36 and 54 goals respectively.

A couple of quick quotes from today's interview at the Minnesota State Fair and recorded on the team's Twitter account:

Frosty:
The Olympic year is always an interesting year... We have a great core coming back.
Meghan Lorence on leadership:
I know how tough it can be to be a freshman, so I'm going to be as welcoming as I can to our new freshmen.

On a lighter note, Hannah Brandt got seriously razzed for saying corn dogs and pronto pups at the State Fair are the same thing. She grew up in the Twin Cities, right? :o

After being deep fried and soaking up that much grease, I doubt that even the corn and the wheat know the difference.

I completely agree ARM. Further, we are extremely vulnerable to injury with five "D" and one ""D/F" on the roster. Any ideas on whick offensive player or players will be identified to move back to D if need be?

exactly what I was going to say, and you could add Burns, who you would think will be on D this year, to your statement about McMillan & Ramsey,
scoring goals will not be a problem.
my guess is that the goalies will be much busier than Nora was last year
