Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

The staff will have their work cut out between the losses and new additions. As a staff though they've proven pretty adept at such endeavors. You just don't replace Noora but they have some promise among candidates for the job. Under the circumstances losing Stecklein is a pretty hard hit too IMO.

Yeah, but it is like a small step "backward" (if that) vs. the big leap forward she will bring when she returns.

One question... Over the past two seasons, Sletta and Leveille have a combined 4 starts with 4 shutouts, 11 appearances with 386+ minutes played, 114 shots faced with 0 goals against. How much of that do you attribute to the excellent play of the goaltender, and how much of it comes from having a solid defensive core in front of her (averaging more than 3 minutes per shot on goal)?

I didn't take the time to see who they played against, but I'll bet they were cellar-dweller starts and mop up minutes. But even so, no goals in such a long stretch is promising.

I think that could easily be spun as the glass being half empty or half full as one chooses. From the little we've seen of the returning goalies, they play a similar style to Noora -- small, quick, athletic, aggressive -- so from that aspect, watching her play may have been of more benefit than it would to a goaltender who relied more on size, playing her angles, and filling the net. What I saw of Leveille was very impressive. However, the key for any goalie is largely mental. How will she react to being #1, or when she and the team experience difficulty? We don't know. She seems very even keel, but we'll still have to wait and see.

As for Eeyore's concern about the number of skaters, that is with a class of seven frosh. I'm not sure that I'd want any class to get much bigger. Given one has to plan for both Stecklein and Kessel to return (with Stecklein now being in the same class as this fall's freshmen), more recruits would just come at the expense of the recruit class a year out. Olympic years have always complicated the roster and will continue to do so as long as we remain a top team.

I'm not sure that I disagree in the big picture. However, for the coming season I think it could be a real concern. Anyone that isn't ready to step in right away is a hole on the lineup every night, and injuries will only compound that.

A heads up for GWH fans...if you have the time, be sure to watch the BTN Awards Show tonight at 7 pm CT on the Big Ten Network! GWH is nominated for three awards: Women's Team of the Year, Women's Coach of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year (Amanda Kessel).

I'm not really up to speed on the entirety of women's NCAA team sports but can't imagine a more dominant season than that of GWH.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Clean sweep! Congrats to Frosty, the entire GWH team and Amanda Kessel!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Just coming up for air after dealing with storm damage for a couple of weeks. Hats off to a tired, sweat-streaked crew from Omaha who appeared out of the gloaming and restored power to my house even though they were "done for the day". I appreciate how some people place service to others highest on their values list, sometimes even at the cost of their own lives.

I noticed that my season ticket renewal is in my email. Assuming that they have not reduced prices, it appears that we will have a lot fewer home games than last year. Anyone have any idea when they will post the schedule for 13-14? Trying to do some planning which would be much easier with the game dates to fill in.

After all these years, the instinct when I step out into a devastated landscape with helicopters circling overhead is still to scan the horizon for signs of Charlie. Apparently bone deep...

Had two NC series on the road in 2012-2013 that I can recall. UNH & St. Lawrence...so I would like to have a NC match up at home next season. Two would be alright with me.

I had no storm damage personally. Visited my old neighborhood nearby and the home I moved out of mid winter...after being there for 40+ years. They got hit hard with many very large, old growth trees lost. Two in my old yard. Been helping my long time former neighbors clean up. Miraculously almost no structural damage. One stretch of fence in my old backyard was taken out by one of those trees. Good to hear you're safe. That's enough of the rough stuff from Mother Nature this summer...for my taste.

Given that we have a maximum of 34 regular-season games to work with and 28 of them are taken by the WCHA (14 of which will be at home), that leaves only 6 potential non-conference games.

A season ago, four of the six NC games were on the road as noted, but we opened the season with a NC series at home vs. Colgate (7-0 and 11-0).

My guess is that the Gopher Ticket Office hyped the WCHA Final Faceoff and the NCAA Frozen Four in the season ticket package a year ago. So yes, that's four fewer home games this year. But those weren't actually part of the package, so they shouldn't be counted as such.

And your guess is as good as mine as to when the schedule will be finalized and published. Last year's came out earlier than several of us expected; the prior two years it had been around this time.

CD is correct. My cost last year was for 19 games: 2 NC, 14 regular season, and 3 first round WCHA playoffs. My cost this year appears to be for 11 games (using the same price as last year). I suppose we can assume the WCHA playoff games will be done separately, but that still leaves me 5 games short of a normal season. What are the chances we will have some games at a site other than Ridder? (You will note that I have discarded the idea of a price break as being too remote for consideration.)

Heard rumors of an outdoor game at TCF - anyone know anything about this?

The arrangement with the Mavericks this season...I like.

Yeah... previously it was...

11/01/2013 Minnesota State @ Minnesota: 7:00 p.m.
11/02/2013 Minnesota State @ Minnesota: 4:00 p.m.

01/17/2014 Minnesota @ Minnesota State: 7:00 p.m.
01/18/2014 Minnesota @ Minnesota State: 3:00 p.m.

... but they apparently decided to change it.

There was also some chatter about trying to get a waiver so that they could play a second exhibition game. It appears that it wasn't granted.

Any talk of an exhibition versus Team USA? That was done in the past, but with the national team now based in the East, who knows.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Interesting... Kelly Terry was listed as one of 24 forwards participating at the Canada National Women's Development Team Selection Camp and is referred to in the press release (and also got a shout out on Twitter from Coach Frost regarding her selection), but the roster page on hockeycanada.ca only lists 23 forwards with Kelly being the missing one.
