Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Doing a little cleaning and discarding stuff accumulated over the years. Have two sets of GWH player cards from 2004-2005 season and 2005-2006 season...if anyone has an interest. Very good to perfect condition. Free to anyone who would like them.
If you still have a set I'll gladly take one - thanks!
Sorry D2D... I talked Brooky into putting them into next season's Power Play Club Silent Auction.

A sophomore "C" for an all R'ville Captaincy? I tend to admire a very steady, consistently dependable presence in that role. A few other well qualified teammates clearly. Just tossing it out there.

For the sake of sharing the news in more locations...

Noora continues to rack up recognition, winning the U. of M.'s Big Ten Medal of Honor Award and following that up with being named to the Capital One Academic All-America Women's Division I At-Large First Team. (She's the first GWH player to be named to the Academic All-America team.)

This comes after 12 GWH players were among 167 Gopher student-athletes named to Academic All-Big Ten teams just over a week ago.

So kudos all the way around.

Yes, congratulations are in order. Ms. Raty and the U of M should be proud of her accomplishments. I don’t want to take anything away from the awards presented to Ms. Raty, but I have to admit that I don’t quite understand the Capital One Academic All-American award. It appears that a school can only nominate three players per gender in the at-large sports category. This category includes, among others, crew, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, swimming, and tennis. At the University, even after removing ineligible freshmen, this must encompass somewhere between 50 and 100 female athletes. I have to believe many of those female athletes could have been nominated (at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and participation in at least 50% of games). I have to wonder how a school like the University decides which three female athletes get nominated. I see Ms. Raty’s cumulative GPA was 3.50 -- I also have to believe that of those approximately 50 to 100 athletes, there were others that garnered a higher GPA than 3.50. This must be true for many D1 and D3 schools. It sounds to me like it is more of a crap shoot (or possibly more of a name-recognition award) than a real honor for an athlete that meets the criteria of the award. It seems it me the award might be more meaningful if Capital One would simply up the ante (say 3.80 cumulative GPA and 50% participation), remove the restrictions on limiting nominations, and award it to all deserving athletes. It is, after all, an academic award. Just my thoughts on this beautiful Friday morning. :)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Not necessarily related to last year's team or this coming year's team, but thought I'd share here for anyone interested...

Gopher alum Emily West and her family lost their home in the Colorado wildfire. Emily posted this update to her Facebook account yesterday...
I just wanted to let everyone know as of right now my family and I are safe. In such a devastating and hurtful time like this, I think about how fortunate and grateful I am to have had time to prepare. I think about the tragedy in Oklahoma with the Tornadoes, how little time everyone had to seek shelter and the loss of life and realize how fortunate I am and how I could have it much worse than I do right now. Love you all and thank you everyone.
... and followed it up with this post today ...
Through some of the most difficult times, losing our home, our land, everything we now own fits into the cab of a pickup truck and only having duffle bags of clothes left, I realize how lucky I truly am. I sit back and think of all the people that lived near us and that I went to high school with that are going through the exact same thing. The friends, family and support system that our family has right now is so uplifting, so once again thank you.

Good points...;)

I recently sold my house to a woman who had lost her house and her every possession in a Colorado wildfire during the spring / summer of 2012. She was an hour away from her home when reached and told she had less than an hour to get out. She only eventually got back to her property to search through charred remnants of what had been her home. When she moved into my old home she brought one small box of salvaged material...her charred silverware. She lost everything. She showed me the before and after pictures of her home and the 20 acre formerly forested property. Total devastation with nothing but rubble where her home had been. My thoughts are with Westy and her family. Obviously GWH fans are very glad Emily and her family escaped unharmed.

A little pins and needles here waiting to get an idea on who will be playing Gopher Hockey in 2013-2014.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Brandt and McMillen will not be part of the US National team competing in the Olympics. Good news for Gopher fans as they will be back but I'm sure it is disappointing to them to not make the team.

Agreed on all counts.

Interesting that four of the five Gophers that made the initial roster are defensemen.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

And that leaves the Gophers with exactly 18 skaters on the roster for the upcoming season. Hope we don't have injuries.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

Revised.

Forwards: Cameranisi, Flug, Schipper, Wolfe, Davis, Terry, Menefee, Bona, Brausen, Garzone, Lorence & Brandt.

Defense: Cline, Haley, Ramsey, McMillen, Burns & Gillanders.

Goal: Peters, Sletta & Leveille
.

Frost has some teaching to do in September. Won't be able to rely on a bench full of talent and goaltending.

The staff will have their work cut out between the losses and new additions. As a staff though they've proven pretty adept at such endeavors. You just don't replace Noora but they have some promise among candidates for the job. Under the circumstances losing Stecklein is a pretty hard hit too IMO.
