Summer viewing. Which reminded me of something I read recently...can't quite recall where. Something about a hypothetical potential for a "Minnesota-like season" in some unspectacular location or for some insignificant program of small recognition. I thought that was a cute fantasy. :)

You have to consider the source on that one. :p

The Roseville Review (weekly free rag in the suburb where I live) is reporting in its July 30 issue, under the byline of Brian Meyers, sports writer, that Ronda Curtin Engelhardt was recently named the head girls hockey coach at Breck.

Long time, no post, this is number 1,000, I thought I would save it for something significant.

After four straight weeks of temperatures in the 90s with ridiculous humidity the idea of sitting in a building cold enough to maintain an ice sheet is ridiculously attractive. September 26th can't get here soon enough.

That's two months away. You'll be shoveling snow by then and wishing for 90 degree days.

I charge one of my tenants less in rent to get him to do all of the yardwork, including the shoveling. Even if I didn't, in the 25 years I've lived in Minnesota it has never gotten so cold that I haven't said, "It could be worse. It could be 95 and humid."

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

The 2013-2014 GWH roster now up.
Random thoughts ...

After a stretch where the coaching staff changed every year, it is nice that we are now seeing some consistency, and it has been reflected in the results. With three new D to work into the rotation, JJ figures to have a busy season.

Bona goes from #15 to #7. It is always hard at first to get accustomed to these number changes while trying to learn new players at the same time. I always had trouble with Bona and Brausen, though, because ponytails can make 15/16 look a lot alike, and they were both smaller, left-handed, left wings. Plus, I'm already somewhat familiar with players like Flug being #3 and Schipper being #6, so that helps.

Cracking the top three lines figures to be competitive. Eight of the top 10 forwards return and the four newcomers all have U-18 Worlds experience.

The battle for cracking the top three lines will indeed be competitive! Of the four incoming freshmen, you would have to give the early nod to #21 (Cameranisi) to ultimately secure a spot as a forward on one of the starting three lines. After that, I would guess that it will be season-long battle between returning forward #18 Garzone and newcomers #6 Shipper, #3 Flug and #12 Wolfe for the final starting forward position on the third line. Whichever way it goes, despite the loss of Amanda Kessel, I don't anticipate that scoring goals will prove to be a serious issue for this team. There is lots of retuning talent up front, and the question will be which player(s) step forward in an attempt to make up for the departure of #8, the loss of which cannot be underestimated. She is perhaps one of the most dynamic women's players to ever play the game. Everyone will need to step up if her absence in this year's lineup is to be minimized.

The main concern this year (IMO) will be at D. We have three solid returnees in #5 Ramsey, #13 McMillan and #27 Gillanders. After that, it appears to be wide open as to who will fill the #4 position as one of the top 4 D. It will come down to returning #17 Burns (who saw limited action last season, I believe all at the forward position - but she did play primarily D while in high school), and incoming freshmen #15 Haley and #11 Cline. Since there are only six who are vying for starting positions, I would expect all to be given plenty of opportunity to earn a position as one of the starting four, and on the second power play unit (unless Frost chooses to go with a forward there).

In goal, it will be a little strange to not see #41 back between the pipes, but based on what I saw last year my gut tells me that we'll be in good shape...#29 Leville would appear to be a very capable replacement, and #37 Sidney Peters comes in with very high credentials as well. Time will tell, but as superb as Miss Raty was the past four years, going into the season I am not feeling too anxious about the goaltender position.

Yes, it would appear that the highest challenge the Gophers will face this year will be rebuilding their D-core, specifically the challenge of replacing the key departures of #19 Megan Bozek (graduation), #7 Jalosuo (graduation) and #2 Lee Stecklein (Olympic team candidate).

An interesting question: Will these key departures at D (and of #8 Kessel) result in a more disciplined, defensive-oriented style of play as compared to last year? Given these significant losses, what adjustments might be made?

And of course, all of my above comments/guesses assume no significant, season-ending type injuries, and that all key players will remain academically eligible. To come even close to the accomplishments of the past two seasons will require a renewed total dedication of everyone, players and coaches alike. Needless to say, it won't be easy, and everyone else will be gunning for you!!!

I can't believe the Gophers weren't included in the 'Best Team' category at the Espy's. Maybe I'm not understanding something but the lack of recognition when compared to other teams and athletes the Espy's featured makes me sad. Boo.

Switching gears...

Notice: This is a shameless promotion for the team and for its booster club. You have been warned. ;) :p

Looking back on last season, a number of artistic prints have been created to commemorate the NCAA title run and the back-to-back championships. Those are now available for purchase. Info is at http://www.powerplayclub.org/pb/wp_75239a4e/wp_75239a4e.html.

As for the upcoming season, Coach Frost has challenged the Power Play Club and its membership to sponsor the lockers of all of the 2013-2014 GWH players (minimum $500 donation for each locker). The sponsorship form is available using this link (PDF file).

Heard rumors of an outdoor game at TCF - anyone know anything about this?
Per the Facebook feed for Let's Play Hockey magazine...
Expect an announcement soon on Golden Gopher (Men's) Hockey hosting an outdoor hockey game vs. Ohio State at TCF Bank Stadium on Jan. 18, 2014. Intersport would organize/share a large part of the financial risk of the game. They organized the Hockey City Classic last season at Soldier Field. In addition to the men's game, the Minnesota Women's Hockey (team) would also likely have an outdoor game, along with a ‪Gophers‬ alumni game.

Following up on another discussion point...
The 13 players selected from the Development Team to play with the "senior" team members in this week's Red vs. White series is at http://www.hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/Team-Canada/Women/Under-22/2013-14/Rosters/Selected.

The schedule for the Red vs. White practices and games is at http://www.hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/Team-Canada/Women/Under-22/2013-14/Schedule/Red-White.

A full recap of today's news is at http://www.hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/news/13-development-team-players-selected-for-series-with-national-team.
Kelly Terry was one of the 13 D-Team players remaining in Calgary this week. I haven't seen how they're splitting the 40 combined players between the two squads, but the first game is set for tomorrow (Wednesday) night, with the second game Thursday night and the finale on Saturday.

740 1/2 hours until Gopher hockey is back in game action, but who's counting? ;) :D :p

But honestly we can say that there's less than a month until the Gophers host the Japanese National Team. Yes, it's exhibition, but it's hockey just the same.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013, part II

And while I'm posting some miscellany...

Coach Frost and a few players will be at the U. of M. Stage at the Minnesota State Fair on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
