Minnesota at Denver Feb 10 & 11

Re: Minnesota at Denver Feb 10 & 11

Man, you live in a state of denial that I thought was exclusive territory for und fans...
What he doesn't realize is Rau will bounce off 90% of the guys he hits due to being so much smaller than them - whether or not he's attempting to drive them into the boards.

This isn't like the 6'4 dump truck that is Helgeson laying somebody out.

Re: Minnesota at Denver Feb 10 & 11

I've got no problem with calling charging, roughing, unsportsmanlike with the hit because it was late and from a long ways off. I don't believe it should have been called a major boarding and game misconduct though. I'd go four minutes on a double minor but if that was boarding then there is less checking in the men's game than the women's anymore and the Siouxage should just fold their program.

Re: Minnesota at Denver Feb 10 & 11

FFS... Yeah, ok. We're in the Jack Jablonski era. Let's ban checking. There's always a chance a check could cause an injury.

It was not a check. A check is to separate player from puck. Player passed puck at least 4 strides before Rau hit him. It was a late hit (Interference or Roughing), blind side, which sent zeller violently into the boards (Boarding). That kind of hit has been against the rules for a long time.

The reaction since Jablonski's injury has been the textbook definition of an overreaction.

Changing the rules (upping the minutes served) may have been an over-reaction. But enforcing the existing rules to a higher standard is long overdue. I've read USA hockey's rulebook, and I totally think the rules and points of emphasis are well written and on-target. Biggest gap is in enforcement. I know NCAA might answer to a different rulebook, but I'm guessing it's mostly the same. There's a big difference between legal checking and a lot of the crap I see at all levels of hockey.

Re: Minnesota at Denver Feb 10 & 11

I thought we played decent the first 10 minutes and the last 25 minutes, the rest was blah.

Edit: Patterson seemed shaky through the first period.

Sure. But when Minnesota plays well the goals never seem to come. This offense has some severe problems.

Re: Minnesota at Denver Feb 10 & 11

So I still want to know how much of duper's money I'm going to be able to take on his over bet of 7 goals for the Pie-in-ears. I'd certainly be willing to put up a grand on that one as I take the under.
Time to get a bet down on the second half.

Re: Minnesota at Denver Feb 10 & 11

The Gophers seemed one pass behind in all aspects of the game. I thought they tried to use the rail far, far too much when instead had they looked would have found open ice and a teammate to pass to. I thought on the PP they spent too much time feeding to the blue line with no one clogging up the middle - if a shot did somehow manage to make it to net the forwards were on the outside too far away to either redirect or gobble up the rebound. They hit more bodies with pucks than I think the rest of the year combined - was Harrington reincarnated 15 times last night? Patterson also looked shakey - far more than I've noticed in recent past.

That's not meant to take anything away from Denver - they dominated from midway of the 1st through the end of the 2nd and weathered the Gophers push the early part of the 3rd to never let the Gophers get close. Gophers need a more consistent effort tonight from their forwards, special teams and Patterson if they want to get a split.

Re: Minnesota at Denver Feb 10 & 11

Kyle Rau has been banned for 1 game by the WCHA.

Good decision. If for no other reason than it minimizes the potential of a Mayfield or a Ryder (or anyone else) from doing something regretful. It isn't that punk-boy rau didn't deserve to sit anyhow, but the league took a necessary proactive step here. The proper on-ice call should have been a DQ from the get-go, to be honest.

It was a DQ call on the ice.

Not according to the box score...and there would have been no need to announce that he had been assessed a game if it were a DQ from the get-go because a DQ contains an automatic one game suspension which would have been universally understood (thus not needing the announcement).

Ah, I thought you were implying that he kept playing in last night's game, which was not the case. My bad.

Re: Minnesota at Denver Feb 10 & 11

Just because you have seen worse offenses doesn't mean that Rau's penalty shouldn't be enforced the way it was. Cheap shots like Rau commited should be enforced the way it was. There is no need for that sh*t in college hockey
