Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

People are mentioning Shemansky and Mangene, and I concur;those guys were the two rays of hope at Union for me.I also liked Beattie and Abbott during that 2-day disaster.(Still wondering about Gustav.I don't think he's healthy right now.)

Maine has enough talent to win this year. That,I believe..And it's just too hard to root against them,in the hope that a coaching change will be made sooner rather than later,as much as I think it should happen.

So,I'm going to strap a set of antlers on my head and go for a stroll in the woods tomorrow.Goodbye,all.

for those that remember the graphs i posted last season re: scoring, etc., maine scored a scant 86 goals in 39 games last season (2.21 goals/game)... so far this season, they've scored 21 goals in 7 games (3.00 goals per game)... still not stellar, but at the current pace, they would score 102 on the season (not including playoffs)... last year i posted the following when discussing just how abysmal the offense was:

true, but you flat out don't win scoring a meager 74 goals over 34 games... there is a minimum target level for goals that needs to be maintained in order to be successful... i would argue that to be 100 goals...

the above was said in the context that darling and wilson both had sub 3 goals against averages last season

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Nice win tonight. Hard work 1st and 3rd periods, but 2nd was rough. Have to find ways to put 60 min together. I liked the lines tonight. House line was solid, no goals, but many chances. I agree Wally, Diamond is all over the ice. Seems to have good toughness and speed. His puck luck will change soon, with any luck... Mangene line with Shemansky and Dek was extremely fun to watch. Shemansky and Mangene get after it. Speed from those two. Dek's size and speed is noticably better. Flynn Abott and Dee had chances too. Dee appears to have improved. Flynn's motor never quits and Abott seems like he could become a quality sniper. Swallow Lidermark and Anderson were adequate. I like Anderson's speed. Swallow played hard all game. Good pk man. Liedermark needs some work. The D played pretty well. Dimmen is just solid on both ends of the ice. Hegarty is a work in progress. Van Dyk and Banwell looked ok. Oneil is tough and plays both ends of the ice as well. Darling was fantastic on 3 or so short handed chances. He can definitely steal some games if he plays like he is capable. Progress for sure tonight. Hopefully a confidence builder. Lets see what happens next week against BU. A lovely Sunday afternoon home game.
Someone asked me how I was feeling about the team and I said not confident, but always optimistic. Keep the faith.

DImmen played well, I'm still waiting for Hegarty to show me how good he can be, he's gonna improve and will be a stud before its over. Last night he played with confidence. Leidermark can't keep up. Dek can though:) The PP needs work

What did everyone think of the cheerleaders on skates? They would look even better wearing short skirts.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Shouldn't you be on a date with Andy Stern.

While I have voted no on question one, support equal rights and don't really care what goes on between two consenting adults I don't swing that way. Now if you had suggested Joanna Krupa or Milla Jovovich...

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Did we win or just fail to lose? Is this what a winning streak feels like? Too bad we got da big red menace coming up....well, it wuz fun for one game.:)

Hey, we're in next to next to next to last place....chasing Mack :D

Why would any Maine fan root against them? As negative as the board gets I don't think anyone wants them to lose. We still want to see great games.

Despite the wins it doesn't change what's going on between the Alfond walls.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

The big question in my mind concerns Darling. Can he put together more than one very good performance  Walrus, you are now 1-1. I had the same feeling about a Maine win last night, but I didn't post it. So it doesn't count.:D

Your concern for my well-being is touching.

I'm sure it was in poor taste.

But what do you expect? Around these parts, "priceless" seems less a human being than an automated script that logs onto uscho and posts randomly-generated smug, self-congratulatory messages on those rare occasions when its triggered by hockeyeastonline data showing Maine holding a lead.

4200 attendance last night, the golden goose is slowly dying

Liked the young lady who sang the Anthem, she was good

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

they played a great, hustliung, aggressive first period, and then came out for the second like they'd forgotten everything they did in the first to build the lead. Noticeably slower, less aggressive, and seemingly too cautious. As I said on the Scores thread, it was like TIMMAY gave them his "sit on the lead and conserve energy" intermission speech. Looked a lot like past games, too many guys trying to do it themselves, and not passing and utilizing their linemates as they should.

Luckily, he either abandoned that strategy for the third, or the team just came out with more fire, but they played a good solid third period as well. They came out and started working as a team again.Mangene and Shemansky are a blast to watch, but I don't know what it is with Nyquist. Either he doesn't use his linemates well, or they're just not on the same page with him and so can't take advantage of the opportunities he creates.

Goaltending was solid, no spectacular, but a good couple steps above where it has been. What we've been expecting to see from Darling since he got here. Hopefully, it's not a fluke, and he can build on this. Same for the team as a whole, Still not sold though, as we've seen performances like this from TIMMAY teams over the past few years, only to come out and stink up the place the next game, so we'll just have to wait and see.

.

They can't keep up?. He like to razzle dazzle and get nothing at times but he will throw a nifty pass and generally his linemates don't have their sticks down to take advantage. I can't figure it out either.

Maine played a heads up first period and Darling played well throughout. Everything else was classic Timmay -- passive 5 on 5, coughing up the puck on the PP, etc. How many shorthanded opportunities did VT have? It's nice to see the youngs guys stepping up, though. I wonder how long it will take Whitehead to beat them into submission.
