Incredibly Dull Boring 2022 Pairwise and Tournament Possibilites Thread

Now I just need it announced that you can't leave in between games 1 and 2 to complete the stupidity.

The powers that be must think that empty seats look good on TV. The NU crowd (including me) isn't going to hang around for three hours waiting for the UMass game if they can't at least leave the building to get a meal or down a round or two. And the UMass crowd isn't going to be at the NU game for the same reason. If this indeed is the policy, it is beyond gross incompetence and stupidity!!

In Michigan, I have no idea who could host. All the barns are on campus, so you would be talking about Van Andel in Grand Rapids, who has in the past, but lost too much money...

There are four places in Michigan that could be a host, but only two are really viable. The Dow Events Center in Saginaw and the Mercy Health Arena in Muskegon would be a tough sell, especially without any real host school in close proximity and their limited capacity.

USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth intrigues me. The former Compuware Arena is just 16 miles from Ann Arbor and on the fringe of metro Detroit. It has plenty of locker room space, a second ice sheet, and holds just about 3500 so it's going to look full. There is a hotel right in the parking lot and lots of lodging options within 10 minutes, and it's only about a 20 minute drive to Detroit Metro Airport.

But the best option is one that I'm not sure has ever been approached.

Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo holds over 5,000 as the home of the minor league Kalamazoo K-Wings. It also has a second sheet, three hotels in direct proximity, a natural host school in Western Michigan, easy access from Detroit and Chicago, an airport with connections to ORD-MSP-DTW, and it's less than a 3 hour drive from nine D-1 schools.

Ahhh, but you get back to back quadruple-headers on the ESPN family of networks and god forbid a game goes into triple-overtime, you will not be affected by watching your daily does of gambling ads.

By the way, what are the hosting requirements with respect to ice sheets and locker rooms? Oh, and hotels, too.

You mean i can't have a regional at the beautiful show place arena just 6 miles from my house? 5K seating but we'd have to find a new ice plant

For example, I keep thnking of Duluth and Mankato. And, I can't find that Amsoil has a second ice sheet, but I can find that they hosted the Women's Championshps in 2012 or something.....so I assume they would meet all the requirements if they chose to bid.

Mankato's rink is city owned, so I assume it would be available as host. But, again, I can't find independent verification of 2 sheets of ice. The team does practice at a different, 2-sheet facility, though.

And, do I have it right that the rules are "Hosting on campus is not allowed", but "Hosting in home rink, if not on campus, is allowed"?

I will say this, if you are coming from Mankato or UND(both schools) or Harvard (jk, you won't see any Harvard fans)...I can assure you that downtown Albany has amazing architecture this side of Bucharest. If I were pre-gaming beforehand I would check out The City Beer Hall across the street from the arena. If you are scrambling around for hotels, sure you might find hotels in downtown Albany but Wolf Road is where you have every major hotel chain representing. Albany is not really famous of any type of food but if you like cheap seafood, Ted's Fish Fry is among the best out there.

One sheet at "Mayo Whatever the Corporate Name is Now" in Mankato. Two sheets at All Seasons Arena a couple miles away, but the team practices, works out, and has their offices at the Mayo.

It's beyond time to change the specs and format. With the day off in between and game times at same site spread out...are we headed for an all time attendance low under this format? What is the current low? Help me out Sean...

more and more the idea of four regionals seems foolish.

Seems like a layup to go back to two regional sites with the added day off and have two games per day

We've rehashed this over and over. There are very few sites capable of hosting more than 4 teams effectively, as proven by the previous times it was attempted. Locker room space, practice time, hotels, and other logistical problems make this idea a non-starter. Add in that no buildings with regular tenants want to clear their facility for that long and your options of where to hold this fantasy regional are zero.

Plus for the NCAA, attendance is so far down as a determining factor that they really don't care. They get their guaranteed money off the top no matter what the crowds are.

They're already clearing their venues for 3 days.

If everyone involved wanted to, they could make the old "super" regional format work except for the fact we now have 16 teams instead of 12. That complicates matters. A two site system wouldn't work with that many teams. I like the element of "neutral" site regionals. It's nice for us in the east. Many of the eastern sites are a doable drive and I even saw Springfield, MA is in line for a regional in a couple years. I don't want ALL games to be on campus before the FF. But maybe there is a way to work in an opening round that is on campus and remake the college hockey calendar.
