Incredibly Dull Boring 2022 Pairwise and Tournament Possibilites Thread

Sucks to be Albany. How many people constitute a "crowd?" That might be a "small gathering."

I believe it's the same ratio that turns a kerfuffle into a donnybrook.

And it always sucks in Albany, armpit of the known universe (and I lived in the CapDist for a while so this isn't speculation).

And if you were to double the games at a site and only play 2 a day, you're up to at least 5 active days with a 6th for setup and possibly a 7th for teardown.

I completely do not understand your idea here. To wit: Imagine this at Sheels in Fargo:

Thurs: Western Regional Semi's
Fri: Midwestern Regional Semi's
Sat: 1:00 Local time...Western Regional Final
Sat: 7:00 Local time...Midwestern Regional Final

Because each team also is guaranteed a full practice the day before a game, and also a pregame skate the day of a game. Those have to be on the rink you're playing the game on, so the second sheet doesn't help.

So Tuesday is your set day.
Wednesday would have 4 practice sessions.
Thursday would have to have 4 practice sessions, 4 skatearounds, and two games.
Friday two practices, 4 skatearounds and two games.
Saturday just 4 skatearounds and two games.
Sunday would reset the building.

Unless you have 8 dedicated locker rooms, you're going to then ask teams to constantly shuttle in and out. None of this is viable.

are we headed for an all time attendance low under this format? What is the current low? Help me out Sean...
I doubt that because of the limited attendance last year. From the official figures published by the NCAA in their Men's Attendance Records and Sites the total attendance in 2021 for each regional:

Perhaps crazy idea:
#1 seeds host the regionals. What adjustments to the requirements would that take?

I posted this earlier in this thread:

Just throwing it out there, does anyone know how many on campus/home rinks meet the other criteria needed for a regional? Or let's say the criteria was tweaked and going into any season you automatically know what rinks are at least capable of hosting. From there you gauge the interest of those schools to see if they are willing to keep arena open that weekend in case they earn a host spot. Doesn't college baseball do this? Hosts are picked based on merit and how you performed during the season. The regional format is the same in college baseball, 4 teams per regional.

So what is the main difference? That some hockey arenas are used for different events? Well, any school that agrees to keep the arena open would already know they have to work it out with whoever owns the arena. Maybe the school reimburses the owner of the building for that weekend if they don't host. SOMETHING like that. Is it simply impossible to try and get as close to a baseball format as possible?

Imagine Arizona State getting a 1 seed and hosting in the cavernous 747 seat Oceanside Arena. Or Fairbanks hosting a regional. That would be a gong show.

See my previous post. There would still have to be an agreed upon set of rules for anyone wishing to host. Obviously not a perfect situation but the college baseball model seems to work!

Read through requirements for hosting, didn’t see 2 rinks as a requirement. Just 2 ice resurfacers. And to an earlier post, St Cloud’s rink is on campus.

In the bigger discussion, current regional set up is garbage for the fans and is definitely not a championship environment for the teams as a result. Absolutely sucks that the big show can’t come anywhere near the atmosphere of conference tournaments.

Not disputing your numbers, but it sure matters if a (somewhat) local fan-base can drive there.

I've been to a few regionals and often the atmosphere is good for the closest team. For instance in Cincy, PSU had a great turnout and their games had good atmosphere whereas Denver had a terrible turnout and there was little atmosphere for them. The same thing would happen on campus. If WMU for instance, or Ferris State, or Union, or Clarkson, hosted, then the atmosphere would be great if they played but lousy for everyone else. So yeah, you could get it a bit better on campus, but total attendance would be down and it's not a panacea . Disregarding all the issues previously pointed out.
Considering them and considering that more than half of college hockey couldn't come up with a way to host that worked, then you have what we have. Also, ad in that a lot of college hockey teams have terrible atmosphere as a matter of course.

Now Mel Pearson came out in favor of campus sites recently for 1 reason and 1 reason only. It gives his team an edge.

It seems like the "perfect" formula is a regional in/around Minnesota, Michigan, and two eastern locations. Each state has the most number of teams with 3+ conferences within that footprint and hockey is popular there to pick up a number of people who like hockey. That would make the Denver, Wisconsin, PSU, and Miami fans upset.

I don't have a problem with Loveland having a regional. I could change my mind if there is a dismal turnout with a great Denver team playing in it though. Curious to see how that one goes. Denver is usually in the tournament so this is their chance to show hosting was the right move. Other programs can get upset but if you're not putting in the work to try and host a regional, too bad.

Just went through the process of pretending like I was buying a ticket to Worcester...not a single word on whether you can leave the arena or not. So I called DCU Center (can't remember last time I called a ticket office but here we are). To my surprise I got through to a human being and to further my surprise they knew exactly what I was talking about. They did confirm that while their normal policy is to not allow readmittance to the arena, because the games are so spaced out they ARE allowing you to leave and then come back.

So while I am happy to hear that, why again are sites going to want to bid if everyone who is there bolts in between games and then comes back? Good luck to DCU concessions.

Now I know most of the eastern schools in the tournament are in the 3rd and 4th bands but it would be nice to have a Massachusetts representative in the Frozen 4 in Boston. 5 of the 16 schools are from Massachusetts while much of the conversation I've heard is about how many Minnesota schools are in it(4). Michigan is well represented as well with 3.
