Hobey hat trick

Re: Hobey hat trick

I don't post often but am around the game enough to know what is going on, and from what I am reading, you have no idea what is going on. you are all stats in your comparison.

Interesting you seem to think I don't know what is going on, because I put numbers with my thinking.

How else shall we compare the players? Just by what we see? That is more subjective than I want to be.

When is the last time you saw Wisco Play? Interesting, not this year(live) I bet.

I was not fortunate to see them live. I did watch them last week twice on the tube and have seen several other games this year.

My guess is you saw Bulter twice way back at the beginning of the year. Do you have a more current reference on Butler's impact and play?

Did you even see Nyquist play at all?

Re: Hobey hat trick

Silly discussion...here's the facts:

Nyquist wins...in Detroit, where he will one day wear the Wings uniform. The top scorer in the nation by far.

Butler loses...he tanked it in the playoffs...stock dropped tremendously. No one dares to buy his stock.

Boom Boom Jr loses....eastern bias. Wisco never will have a Hobey winner. (but I really do feel for the cheeseheads)

Simple math.;)

Re: Hobey hat trick

I believe earlier I posted that Geoffrion would not make the HHT. :o

Congratulations to all three players. Having looked at their stats this morning I honestly think any of the three would be a deserving winner. I would like to see Nyquist win, but if Butler of Geoffrion take home the award, it would be hard to complain about it.

This. The arguments here are silly, since obviously the player you are more familiar with will seem like the clear winner in your mind. All three are phenomenal players, and all three have played vital roles with their respective teams. I'm glad I'm not in the committee's position. It would be a very hard choice.

At least you put an opinion out there...

Re: Hobey hat trick

I do not like how the committee weighs so heavily on being a senior and a captain. Based off of performance this year, Nyquist should win. He is by the leading scorer in the country and he turned a struggling Maine program into a contender again. He also should not be punished for returning to college hockey next year, this is a good thing! I feel Nyquist would have recieved HE POTY if voting was done after the HE playoffs as he had 5 points in 5 games while butler and UNH were eliminated and he was held pointless their last 2 games.

However, I feel the voting will not go this way because Nyquist lacks in the intangibles of being a senior, a captain, and humanitarian. I think Butler takes the award. I really feel Geoffrin may be the best player in college hockey as his numbers are very good and hes the best player on the best team. Also, his conference was stronger this year, 48 points in the WCHA is def. 55+ in HE this year. However, this will not be considered. I do not think you can justify 48 points winning the hobey over 61. In Butler's case you can say, well, he had 10 more goals. Geoffrion not being the leading goal scorer or points leader will hurt him. Also, I feel Smith had to of taken alot of votes from him.

Thanks man...this is the important thing right here. All three great players...best of luck to them all and hope there's congrats being offered from all fans of all teams regardless of who wins it...and a complete lack of second guessing and back biting.

Re: Hobey hat trick

Here's a very generic question that I can probably find the answer to on the Hobey Baker website...but what is the voting procedure here?? Is it all one vote that occurs and they just tease you with the top-10 and the hat-trick before announcing the winner?? Or do they vote once to establish the top-10, then vote again to get to the hat-trick, and then vote again to pick among the 3???

Edit: Found the answer http://www.hobeybaker.com/vote/process/

Re: Hobey hat trick

Nyquist wins, comes back and wins it again next year. :p

I read an article in the freep (or maybe it was detnews) in which the Red Wings GM said he advised Nyquist to go back to college for at least his junior season. So we can count on that part of your prediction, at least.

Side note: is it possible for all Maine's NHL draftees to be drafted by Detroit? New England loyalty be d--ned, I love that organization.

Could fans of these players discuss more of the off-ice credentials of these players? Or, their "story"?

For example (and UNH fans, feel free to correct/add to any of this), Butler came to UNH rather unheralded, undrafted, and I don't recall anyone making a huge deal out of the coaching staff recruiting him. He was obviously above average his freshman year, and steadily progressed during his four years at UNH. As a captain his senior year, he led by example on a team that most people predicted 4th/5th in preseason, and lower as the season got underway. Under his leadership, the team developed a "never say die" attitude, coming back in the third period of numerous games, and working all the way to the top of Hockey East. He was honored for his community service contributions this year, being nominated for the Hockey Humanitarian Award, though he is not a finalist. I don't know what his academics are like, but from stuff I've heard, I think he does pretty well.

Anyone care to do something similar for Nyquist or Geoffrion?

On Butler I saw it somewhere in the news he has one class left to finish to get his degree. The report said he will finish it up in the summer, didn't say if that was because he was leaving school to play in the NHL for the next couple weeks or if it is an additional class that he needs to take. Also Umile said on his season end press conference (thank you Inside Hockey) Butler has been an excellent student.

Re: Hobey hat trick

@ CbG: Bobby was around a 3.4 GPA, in Sports Management & Policy, if IIRC.

@ everybody else: I didn't have time to read in depth, but I got the impression somebody was saying that they didn't think the award should be based on the inclusion of captain-ship, humanitarian, etc . . .

While you may not agree with it, off-ice is part of the selection process. I think being a Senior has less to do with it than being a captain -- but the two are almost mutually exclusive.

So, if you're upset with the people here saying one player should win over another because of that person's off - ice persona, don't hate them, hate the system. I don't have a strong opinion either way, but based on the given selection criteria I truly think Butler will win (and that's not just UNH Blue Shaded glasses). All three are deserving -- or they wouldn't be here.

@ the person who said Butler tanked in the playoffs; did you see Butler's goal against Cornell? Did you see him working hard the entire 60 minutes against RIT? Because I did. And again, the Hobey Baker award is not just about stats.

It's because he's in Ottowa now :)

Re: Hobey hat trick

Since Butler has ditched and abandoned UNH & College Hockey, should he be allowed to win?

So historically has anyone been awarded the Hobey after they signed with the pros?

Not sure if this is tongue in cheek, but he was a senior. What do you want him to do?
