Hobey hat trick

Re: Hobey hat trick

Blake wasn't even the best player in the WCHA this year... that was Chev... the should rename this award who ever plays on the team that goes the furthest and had ok stats.

With that thinking then, it should have been Brian Elliott winning it in 2006, since he went the farthest, but he didn't. It was a guy whose team didn't even make the tourney. So don't give that bs about how it just goes to the person whose team goes the farthest. If that were the case, we would already have 4 Hobey winners, instead of this being our first

Re: Hobey hat trick

This award just lost all its creditability – now there will be less prestige in winning this award than there would be playing a round at Augusta if they decided to let women in the club. This is like James Sheppard winning MVP in the NHL.

Re: Hobey hat trick

Hard to believe this is Wisconsin's first Hobey. Let's hope the outcome tomorrow is better than after UNH's first Hobey.

In my opinion, he was the clear choice of the final 3. Goalies don't typically win this award, nor do underclassmen.

If it has lost all of its credibility, why bother to post about it?

And Paul Kariya was not the MVP of his team Jim Montgomery was! But Paul was still the best player in the country!

Congrats to Blake and agree with others that it is about time a Badger won this award!

How was he the clear choice over Butler? Both are senior captains, but Butler has better stats and does more off the ice.

RinkPig is a Gopher fan whose own fanbase disowns him. Not surprising that he took this stance.

Congrats to Blake. He certainly earned it.

Saying Butler had better stats depends on your interpretation of statistics and which ones are important. It seems to me that the "off the ice" stuff has a diminished importance to the voters.

Which is exactly my frustration as to why Butler didn't win.

More goals than Geffrion, more points than Geffrion. If off-ice stuff is supposed to be part of it -- and the selection criteria list -- why doesn't it seem to be included.

Somebody please tell me what quantifiable individual statistic Blake Geffrion had that Bobby Butler was not equal to him with, and I will end my complaint against Geffrion's being given this award.

So much for "East Coast Bias."

I think it probably came down to the team's success, honestly. Even when they are supposed to be considering the player as an individual, the post-season success of the team is going to color that view.

But remember, the winner is supposed to have already been chosen, and the top 3 vote getters all announced. Wisconsin's domination of RIT happened after the vote, so all the voters had to look at was one extra win for Wisco.

But they probably considered the Hockey East playoffs.

Re: Hobey hat trick

The final vote took place after regionals. That one extra win shouldn't have made any difference. If anything, bringing team success into it should've worked in Butler's favor. Wisconsin would still be a very good team without Geoffrion. UNH would be very mediocre without Butler.

Re: Hobey hat trick

I can't give a quantifiable stat that shows Geoffrion's superiority, but he was probably the best defensive forward in the country, best faceoff guy, best power play forward, and had offensive stats that were comparable to all other players in the country. Seems pretty obvious to me that he was the premier player this year.

Re: Hobey hat trick

Didn't know where else to post this, but this is what makes college hockey so cool.

The Hobey Baker trophy is at the table next to me at the bar. I went to take a photo, and instead was given an opportunity to take multiple photos as well as hold the trophy myself for some photos.

Hats off to the Hobey Baker committee, you guys are the coolest

This statement may hold up if stats were advertised as being the only thing that count - and if that was the case, no one in the top three would have been in the top three - except maybe Nyquist for points and Butler for scoring... hmm.

That being said, all that about sportsmanship and off-ice leadership and community involvement has just shown itself for what this year's committee thinks of it: absolutely worthless. Just go back and read the write-ups about the Hat Trick, if they're still up. Based on what these guys have done off the ice, even with on-ice performance being equal, this award was not Geoffrion's.

Was it family? Was it Wisco's lack of Hobey winners? Who knows. I know my perception of previous Hobey winners has changed substantially, though.

Here's a thought: maybe Melrose said, "Hey, I really want to meet this Geoffrion kid, see how much of this hockey family shows up. Give it to him."

Re: Hobey hat trick

Anyone else think Blake's picture of him holding the Hobey looks like he just won an award for best porno of the year? Nice stash D Bag!

Re: Hobey hat trick

I understand that fans of Butler and Nyquist are dissappointed they didn't win, and rightly so, as those guys were very deserving. The Hobey is a subjective vote and Geoffrion got the most votes. That's all. Who knows? Maybe he got all the votes or maybe he just got one more than the other guys. Say whatever you want I suppose, but I do take some exception to any implications (if there are any) that Blake somehow wasn't a good candidate, or wasn't deserving as well.

Btw- Rink Pig = ignore

The guy won the award for three reasons. 1) he was a senior 2) his last name and finally 3) his team is still alive! Butler had a good 4 years and its too bad he has NO Hardward to show for it. Nyquist on the other hand will win the hobey during the next 2 years and most likely a National Championship too! Congrats to Wisconsin and Geoffrion this was your year.
