Hobey hat trick

Re: Hobey hat trick

Don't worry, Osorojo. While Nick's argument is legitimate, his tone tells me that he's still bitter about the last time BC faced Cornell in March.

My tone! Yea, you can really figure out my tone on a message board. I'm glad every time you see a BC fan on a message board you put your hand down your pants and are reminded of Cornell's 2003 win over BC in the NCAAs in your best season in the past what, 20 years? I'm all broken up about it, being a few years after and before two national titles and all. Luckily you guys end up in another bracket or meet an early demise most of the other years while BC trudges on to bigger and better things. Oh well, so sad, that's life. (FWIW, you all got hosed in Buffalo on that bogus high stick review but that's hockey!).

With that out of the way, perhaps you should go back to the original point (if you can get that memory of 2003 out of your head for a few seconds) and wonder why someone (illogically?) believes that the ECAC has been competitive without even providing any actual reasoning for this contention all the while providing a smokescreen to the issue with wording like, "Not bad for a league in which most (all?) member schools do NOT offer athletic scholarsips, and most (all?) member schools demand rigorous academic achievement from their athletes"?

In the end, we're talking about the Hobey and it is certainly not unreasonable to discount a player's numbers or accomplishments in a terrible league like the ECAC. That's all.

Even after I wrote a second time to re-state that I agree with your point, you're still typing away?

To North Star's question above, Cornell has 7 NCAA wins under Schafer. I don't think the rest of the ECAC has had too many. LOL on the comment about Clarkson's not counting.

EDIT - The ECAC is not as strong as the WCHA or HEA, and is typically not as strong as the CCHA, but it isn't "terrible" either.

Re: Hobey hat trick

It's easy to understand reluctance to discuss differences in recruiting guidelines and academic expectations for college hockey players. There are clear, if not constructive reasons for refusing to accept (let alone discuss) the mounting financial pressures accompanied by decreasing academic expectations faced by college (academic) athletic programs, including hockey.
The "I'm rubber, you're glue" proclamations which replace a serious discussion of the future of college hockey aren't particularly productive or stimulating.

Re: Hobey hat trick

Blake Geoffrion really impressed me last night. Hes a total package. Gonna be a tough decision for the selection committee....Scrivens sucked, Cheverie didnt show a lot, Butler looked good. Nyquist didnt hurt or help his situation yesterday. :)

Re: Hobey hat trick

Nice to see Scrivens get lit up against a Hockey East team last night. Would Scrivens even have a save % of .900 in a real league?

Right on schedule Cornell/ECAC!! Thumbs up.

Re: Hobey hat trick

go nyquist

forget nyquist. he couldn't even get his team to the tourney. Look towards Geoffrion, he's been awesome and he's in the frozen 4. He is a real hobey contender, unlike the hacks you guys have thrown out there like butler, nyquist, and scrivens/

Such a wonderful post you decided to post it twice. :D

In all seriousness, Geoffrion won't make the final 3.

Listen, Carmine. Cornell has nothing to apologize for. Nor do I have to defend them to you.

See the Yale-UND game last night?

Where would RIT finish in a real league? Pick your real league for this response, by the way.

EDIT: leave it to the Pinheads to muck up any thread on this board.

Hacks???!!! Where exactly do you get off calling ANYBODY that makes the list of 10 nominees a hack???

In all seriousness, Geoffrion won't make the final 3.

Smith has always seemed the most likely of the Wisconsin pair to make the Hat Trick and ultimately win the trophy, but I'm not sure that he should win it over Geoffrion. He's up near the top of the leaderboard in goals scored, is a fixture on the Power Play and Penalty Kill units, and is easily the best faceoff guy on the team, and might be the best in the country (I can't say that with absolute certainty, since I don't know how good any other guys are at faceoffs). Not to mention the intangible qualities, specifically leadership, that he's got. If I had a vote I would certainly vote him ahead of Smith. Though Smith is quite a player as well.

Re: Hobey hat trick

I think the final 3 will be Butler, Nyquist, and Smith. I would have said Nyquist, Cheverie/Scrivens, and Smith before this weekend, but both goalies lost. Scrivens had the edge over Cheverie and he laid an egg, and in the process vaulted Bobby Butler past him. Smith will win the Hobey, 47 points for a Dman is in insane. I think Butler will come in at #2, over Nyquist. Butler is a senior, a captain, had the most goals in the country, was a hockey humanitarian finalist, and also his team won the regular season, and also made the NCAA's and beat Cornell before getting upset last night. Nyquist will be in the top 3 because he leads the country in scoring by 8 points. However, hes only a sophmore, no letter, and not as many goals as butler. I think the judges care more about goals, seniority, etc. But at this point, Smith is the guy.

Re: Hobey hat trick

I wonder whether the fact that Nyquist's impressive points total is assists-heavy (19 G, 42 A) might be a factor working against him

I had the same thought, and came to the same basic conclusion that you did (I think).

It's just random. Some assist-heavy players win. Some don't. I can't remember anyone whose stats were more assist heavy than Paul Kariya. Not that Nyquist (or any of the other finalists) compares to Kariya, but the point stands...

while I can't help but wholeheartedly agree with this thought, one game in a playoff scenario really isn't indicative of how a team or the conference they represent match up against another team or the conference they represent.

Could someone show this guy how the internets work? He seems to be having difficulty. :p
