Hobey hat trick

Re: Hobey hat trick

Question: Has any other division I goalkeeper posted three consecutive shutouts? How about three consecutive playoff shutouts?

Re: Hobey hat trick

My guesses

1. Smith (Gotta have a WCHA guy)
2. Nyquist (Gotta have a Hockey East guy)
3. Scrivens (3 straight shutouts and a .937 save %? Insane. Gotta win a tourney game or two though else pick someone else)

I like that the top 2 here are Red Wings' property....

Re: Hobey hat trick

Don't forget that Thiessen was the best player in Hockey East last year while Gilroy was the best player in the country...funny how this stuff works.

And Da Costa was a finalist for POTY, Brian Gibbons wasn't, yet Gibbons made first team and Da Costa made second team.

It's be easier if Hobey voting was limited to each league's POTY in my opinion.

Except that the Hobey Baker award isn't supposed to be awarded based on who the best player is.

Do shutouts against Harvard, Union and Brown actually count as real shutouts? Its kinda like if Ryan Miller posted 3 AHL shutouts.

Number 2...huh? I hope thats not the only reason for putting Nyquist in your list...I mean he's only put up the best numbers in the country by far of anyone, in a league from which the last 2 National Champions have come. He has basically owned this league this season...and yes, it is good he and Smith are both Red Wing properties...they'll join Howard, btw a guy who put up insane numbers (think he still owns the NCAA record for save percentage (over .95?)and gaa (under 2?)) who did not win the Hobey as a great goalie.

UND's Jean-Phillipe Lameoureux did to start the 07-08 season. And Miller had like 27 straight shutouts when he robbed Panzer of the Hobey.

In a league where the regular season champions were on the bubble to get into the NCAA's...

#11 Pairwise, #3 seed in the tourney = not on the bubble.

And if you read any Hockey East threads, we all fully admit it was a down year for Hockey East -- but Nyquist still had big numbers, regardless of the league's overall winning %. If you want to start discussing strength of the league, how many #8 seeds from other conferences made the NCAAs?

Going into the last weekend of the season, not playing and there are many scenarios where you don't get into the tournament = on the bubble

They were tied for #11 in PWR, with 3 other teams, the tiebreaker put them at 11 as opposed to 14.

Fair enough, but your original post was about the entire league, not just UNH. So I ask again, how many other leagues can claim their #8 seed had a strong enough OOC season to make the NCAA tournament as an at large bid?

In short, don't discount Nyquist's numbers because UNH went 1-5-1 in OOC play, but played well in conference and won the league title. If UNH had won even 1 of those OOC games, they wouldn't have been 'on the bubble', and this arguement would be over (well, this portion of it anyway).

Wait, why am I defending him? See my tag line . . .

You may call it a down year, I call it parity. Besides, not counting exhibition games Hockey East collectivly was 38-23-2 vs OOC. That doesn't seem to down to me.

Dirt (may I call you Dirt?):

Thank you for your sort-of real answer, as opposed to the assorted chest-beating epidemic. [I have my doubts about the "27-straight shutouts" you refer to. ] I'm guessing UND's first three opponents in 07-08 were not, as in Scrivens' case, the top contenders for their league championship?

Belittling the level of competition in 2010 ECAC hockey might be justified, but historically the ECAC teams have been nationally competitive and have been moderately successful at winning NCAA championships. Not bad for a league in which most (all?) member schools do NOT offer athletic scholarsips, and most (all?) member schools demand rigorous academic achievement from their athletes.

BTW: Have you noticed that Cornell has advanced in the NCAA basketball tournament, which is most famously populated by institutions offering full-boat, one year, no-academic-expectation scholarships to athletes waiting to get old enough to turn pro? Is this the destination of NCAA Division I hockey?

Defending National Champion Michigan State, Miami and eventual National Champion Boston College. So yes, they weren't quite of the caliber of the vaunted teams of the ECAC. :p
