Golf thread

Sounds like the Saudis become a top level sponsor so they are going to be throwing money at it. Apparently will finish out the 2023 seasons before officially merging. LIV golfers of course are happy (though I suspect that the Saudis were seeking this deal more because LIV was not growing and was actually losing a lot of money and would have folded eventually). Wonder if it will mean some of the guys who got huge signing bonuses will still get them as I heard some of that money was being spread out. Hearing that many PGA players are not pleased at all. They are feeling even more betrayed after staying loyal and in addition, we're not in the loop at all that there were even discussions of this merger with the players. Apparently some team events will be incorporated into this new merger. Not sure what else but it sounds like it won't be exactly like it was before. Probably some changes to FedEx cup, OWGR, Presidents/Ryder cup standings, etc. as well.

Got to say I hate it. Even before LIV came to be, I had been watching less and less golf (part of an overall trend of watching and following sports less) but this will make it even harder to do so. Phil Mickelson, who had become an absolutely unbearable clown of a person, will be even worse somehow.

Honestly, I hope they walk out. Fuck this nonsense. I was actually thinking about going to the 3M open to help show some support to the PGA players. What a crock.

Ohhhh the PGA players are definitely not happy. And it almost sounds like the PIF essentially bought the other two tours. PIF is principle investor in the new entity and gets right of 1st refusal on any new capital investments and will have a seat on the board of this new deal. It stinks to high heaven and Monahan likely is going to make out like a bandit. He sold out these players.

The fact that players like Rory and Tiger were blindsided by the deal, despite their public loyalty to the PGA in the face of ridiculous money, says something.

It should be noted this isn't the only sports move being done by the Saudis as they're apparently offering some notable soccer players some ridiculous salaries with a few seemingly about to sign.

Mookie thinks this was done to placate each for missing out of the Saudi paychecks.

Rumor has it, a few months ago, they made an obscene offer to Liberty Media to buy Formula 1. They were turned down. But money talks. Eventually...

Who says the Miami franchise wasn't bought by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund.
Because the Saudi sovereign wealth fund bought four Saudi teams instead.

Also because Inter Miami is Beckham’s team.

Edit: I mentioned it in the soccer thread but most of money in the Messi/MLS deal is coming from Apple and Adidas.

Couldn't it theoretically buy every team on earth several times over? And Beckham?

It could definitely make a dent.

The soccer deals are the Saudis trying to buy the hosting rights to 2030 World Cup. They want to one up the Qataris so they’re buying foreign players to be ambassadors and build the stature of their domestic league. Buying Miami doesn’t do s- on that end.

Am I an A-hole for being a fan of the 17th redesign at Hoylake?

I get that anything that is off target stands a good chance at being death. But Tour pros absolutely can throw darts from 135 yards. Just put your shot in the center and take your 2 putts to get up & down from 20-25 feet. It's not fancy, but it's a straightforward par. The center of the green does provide a margin of error consistent with what a Major should have.

Where we are gonna see the carnage is when guys try and forgo that margin of error and shoot at the pin. You're gonna have to be spot on with the pin placements. If you are on, you can leave yourself 10-12 feet for a two. It's when you are off 3-5 yards from that point that you bring the edge slopes into play. Yea, it's mini-golf with the ball auto-rolling into the bunkers. And I get that these are vertical bunker walls where you just see a player's ball cap. But again, you can take the safe route and avoid all of that.

Time to be a big boy and take your medicine. I'm gonna love seeing this play out =)
