Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

MASN (Orioles network) just awarded their "Ford Drive of the Game" to David Ortiz's single that barely made it out of the infield.

Gary Thorne: "Okay, it's not much of a drive . . . but he's slumping" :D

Pretty bad when you're an object of sympathy on the other team's broadcast.

That said, Ortiz did get the go-ahead RBI on that little bleeder that went around the shift...

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Various sources are saying the Sox signed Cuban defector Adalberto Ibarra to a MLB level contract. He's a catcher who apparantly can get it down to 2nd base before the commercial break ends.

If he is truly signed to the 40 man roster, who gets voted off the island?? I'm also assuming he's in the catching mix for 2011, not 2010, so this season is looking more and more like Theo's Bridge year.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Well, the defense is still hit or miss, Ortiz is still basically useless, and injuries are still keeping Bill Hall in a starting OF role . . .

But the pitching has stopped sucking, and its amazing what a difference that makes. Good stuff from Lester tonight. A series against Baltimore never hurts, either. :p

Back to .500, and it's still April.
*jumps back on bandwagon*

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Call me a crazy optimist, but there were at least some good things to take from yesterday's loss. Ortiz's 2 HRs, for starters. Time will tell if it was a fluke or the start of him coming around a little. And for better or worse, those 2 dingers earned him some time.

The other was Matsuzaka. Before the 5th inning blowout, he was actually doing pretty well. He had decent velocity (92-94), and he wasn't throwing anything straight. Tito may want to have a quick hook for him until he demonstrates a little more endurance, but for a few innings, at least, that was vintage, maddening, Matsuzaka. Dancing around the strike zone, getting through innings effectively, if not exactly efficiently...

Amazing to watch the delusion on SonsofSamHorn

(radsoxfan @ May 2 2010, 06:14 PM) Just pointing out that a month into the season it's amazing how badly all of the decisions Theo made in the offseason have been "so far".

And even with all those qualifiers, you're still wrong.

yes, $170 million (largest ever Non-Yankee payrol) and you have crap at 3B/DH/CF and C, and are paying $30 million for Lugo/Lowell not to play.

You draw the line with Teixeira for $10 millon, and your four biggest commitments are:

$100 million on Matsuzaka,
$80 million on Lackey
$80 Million on Beckett and
$75 million on Drew

And on the amateur front, you've failed to sign 6 guys who went on to be first round picks when redrafted, and have produced no single Latin talent to speak of.

Meanwhile, Eric Van is busy creating "contextual run" formulae by which the Sox are really winning these games.

Don't forget the crap starting pitching.

Any explanation of the slow start to this season that doesn't begin with: 4.50, 7.22, 4.71, 6.59, and 11.71 is probably wrong.
ERAs of Lackey, Beckett, Lester, Wakefield, and Matsuzaka

Except on paper those are good pitchers and should rebound. The offense, though, has no shot.
And trying to "bridge" to 2011 is a joke, because there are no impact rookies bubbling up.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

That was my point.

Right now the Red Sox have a rotation that (names aside) Pirate fans wouldn't put up with.

If the rotations' collective start to the season had been above average instead of below, we're probably not having this conversation. If they had pitched right around their potential, the jury would still be out.

But they've sucked, and now it's Beltre's fault? He's hitting .345. Scutaro's fault? He's hitting .287. Cameron's? Okay, he's injured.

The three who aren't pulling their weight are actually Youkilis, Martinez, and Ortiz. Forget Ortiz, I don't want to defend him. But Victor Martinez and Kevin Youkilis are, as you say, good players on paper who can be expected to recover, right?

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

To put a sharper point on it, the main reason that "run prevention" is falling on its head is that runs aren't being prevented. The Red Sox have allowed the most runs in the AL. They've allowed more runs than the Yankees have scored.

We can quibble all day long about specific positions, but that is the problem that needs solving, more than any other, imo.

Absolutely.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Now THAT's the sort of thing that Tito does that drives me nuts.

He pinch hits a slumping VMart, with Varitek on 2nd. Martinez fails. 2 batters later, Pedroia comes through with a base hit, and Varitek is out by a mile at the plate. Why? On what planet does it make more sense to leave Varitek in to run and use Martinez to pinch hit?

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Swept by the O's?

FAIL

Good thing the B's and C's are in the second round or there would be a pitchfork and torch bearing mob headed towards Theo's office.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

eh, just think how easy it'll be to get ticket now for games in june, july, august & september ;)

funny that we're back into the days where the Sox are irrelvant until the Bruins and Celtics are done :p

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Well, if you're going to play run prevention and fail, the least you can do is score 14 runs. Against the Angels is a nice bonus.

Nice to see Beltre finally get a HR. Someone needs to tell him that he doesn't need to hit the ball nearly that hard to clear the monster. It doesn't count extra. :p

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Dear Angels,

You aren't going to win. Just end this and we can all go home.

Thanks.
