Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

We can sit here and criticize people who use injuries as an excuse, but Parise help me, this is ridiculous. They shouldn't even be in third place right now...

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Well, for those who say we shouldn't use injuries as an excuse, let's take a look at 2 line-ups. First, let's go with last night's actual, game-used starting lineup:

SS Scutaro
RF McDonald
DH Ortiz
1B Youkilis
3B Beltre
CF Cameron
2B Hall
LF Nava
C Brown

Now, J.D. Drew was healthy, but a lefty was starting. He DID however, appear as a pinch-hitter. At any rate, here's that line-up with typical starters in it.

SS Scutaro
RF Drew
DH Ortiz
1B Youkilis
3B Beltre
CF Cameron
2B Pedroia
LF Ellsbury
C Martinez

Of course you could flip some guys around (Swap Ellsbury and Scutaro, Pedroia and Drew, Martinez and Cameron) but the point is that you can't ignore how badly injuries have torpedoed this team.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Well, that was weird.

Crashed with Boston up 6-1 in the 7th, and Lackey hanging onto a no-hitter. Woke up to an 8-6 win in 13 innings. Gotta love those west coast games.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

When do the Pats start playing pre-season? I have to admit I got a little fired up after the brief run but they have deflated that optimism...they will not only need guys back but guys that come back and instantly return to a high level of play...can't afford guys to take a few weeks to get hitting again

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Patriots???

Bosox are 3 back of the wild card, and there's still a week to go in July. Way, waay too early to bail.

Besides, this west coast stuff isn't as bad as it used to be. They're 3-2 so far, and tonight they send Lester out against Seattle.

What makes you think the Patriots will do any better? :)

My impression is they're in a rebuilding mode.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Well Theo...thats what happens when you go out and get a utility guy to play CF. Seriously, if Camerron is going to be a liability, go out and get one who can make a freakin catch with a perfect game on the line.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

I knew Okajima was coming in when they pointed the camera towards him. Francoma should have left Bard in there. I have no confidence in Oki doki.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Based on the volume of Boos that Lackey got last night, are we supposed to consider Anaheim an honorary Northeast city?

Also, I was stuck with the Angels announcers on MLB extra innings. When Lackey had almost 70 pitches through 3, but had only allowed 1 run, the Anaheim announcers basically called it. "The Angels blew it. They needed more than one run. It looks bad for him now, but just wait. Now that he got through this, watch Lackey pitch into the 7th and still just have the one run allowed."

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

I know we've all said this before but has anybody ever had more late scratches than JD Drew? last night it was hamstring

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Jacoby should be back in a week or two at the most if all goes well in his rehab.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

What is worse: Elsberry's two month rib injury or JD Drew's frequent "twinges"?

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

So is Saltalamacchia supposed to be a long term project, or is he going to be in Boston this year?

It's not like Cash or Molina are terribly good insurance options.

Maybe a little of both? I think you play him in AAA for him to get the at bats and try to turn things around. 'Tek should be back soon to man the backup duty.

I wonder what that will do for V-Mart in the offseason with this acquisition.

Also, the Detroit broadcast is touting Buccholz as a #5 Starter for the Sox

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

I can't imagine they expect Salty to replace Martinez's bat. There's no good reason to think that's even close to happening. But he can definitely be an improvement on Cash's and Molina's dismal offensive numbers.

Ortiz's resurgence could make it hard to keep both Martinez and Beltre. Martinez won't catch forever, and the DH and 1B spots are full. Unless Youk goes to 3rd and Beltre goes away completely -- but I don't like that idea...

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

So when Paplebon wants more money this offseason....what do the Sox do?
