Frozen Fenway - BU / BC 1/8/10

Re: Frozen Fenway - BU / BC 1/8/10

You really think York going to tell a supposedly intelligent (since BC is such a beacon of academic excellence) recruit "hey, come to BC and you too could play outside at Fenway?"

I'm pretty sure York has more to sell than a game at Fenway...

"Want to play for a national title every year?"
"Want to get ready for the NHL?"

And it's not about promising to recruits that they would do this in the future. It's about getting NU's name out there.

Of course, you're making my point. BC doesn't need the exposure, they play on ESPN most years for the title. Of course, they'll take the additional coverage without any problem! NU, however, is very much irrelevant outside of the area and could certainly use the exposure. Just to get their name out there. NU should be recruiting a lot of older kids and Canadian kids. You think a lot of people know about or have heard of Northeastern in Canada? Not likely. You play in this game against a BC or a BU or a Harvard in Fenway, now they've heard of the school, and know you're located in a great city.

Add in the fact that this is a great opportunity for the players. Everyone that has had the chance to step onto that ice is feeling blessed. Those kids on your team would LOVE to play in something like this.

You keep on living in your little dream world. Either you would love to have NU in this event and you're full of it or you're just plain braindead.

You're absolutely right. I'm sure this game would be getting just as much attention if it was Bentley vs. AIC rather BU vs. BC. I'm sure the fact that this game adds a new chapter to the greatest rivalry in college hockey has nothing to do with how much publicity it's getting. And I'm sure all the national exposure this game received during the Winter Classic, and will receive from being broadcast on NHL Network, won't bring any attention to BU or BC.

What exactly do you expect this exposure to get you? A bunch of 16 and 17 year old hockey recruits are going to think "BU has a good hockey program, and this Parker guy seems to know what he's doing...maybe I should go play for them"?

Which is nothing that continuing to build the program and being a consistent winner won't take care of. The name has been getting out there the past few seasons, especially last year with making the NCAAs and Thiessen being a Hobey finalist. And those are far more relevant to recruiting than playing a gimmick game.

That's the only point of yours that is actually relevant. It would be a very cool event for the current players.

Re: Frozen Fenway - BU / BC 1/8/10

Isn't the lack of size why BC's usually gets called lame in the first place?

Or was it just the mustard spilled on their t-shirts, I can never remember which.
"BU's student section would suck without their band, similar to how BC's student section sucks."

"Oh yeah? Well BC's student section sucks!"

;)

And the lack of size is part of why we suck. But our few diehards are awesome, which means that there's a smaller percentage of lame.

Most of BC's students are big football or basketball fans, because we have other sports that people care about. That affects the hockey IQ of our casual student fans, and it's hard to get witty stuff going if no one knows that Jack Parker is a drunken idiot.

And I'm not going to get into another "it's not cost effective to buy jerseys to wear to three sporting events" argument about the Superfan shirts.
especially last year with making the NCAAs and Thiessen being a Hobey finalist.
UVM fans want to know... did you raise a banner for these?
You really think York going to tell a supposedly intelligent (since BC is such a beacon of academic excellence) recruit "hey, come to BC and you too could play outside at Fenway?" No.
How about "want to play in the greatest rivalry in college hockey?

Seeing BC play a game in front of a sold-out stadium of almost 40,000 people on national television would probably help that claim, ya think?

Seeing as NU has always been third best, tops, out of anything in Boston, let alone nationally, the extra exposure from a game at Fenway would be minimal. No one gives two $#!+$ about NU. What in God's name is there to sell to the casual fan or the TV networks?

"Ooo they made NCAAs that one time and had a HOBEY BAKER FINALIST!" WHOAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!11111one11juanwon11!!111eleventy!!11111!!11

First, it would help expedite the process (not that NU will ever be a great hockey program between now and eternity anyway but theoretical stuff is fun to think about).

Second, making the NCAAs and collapsing in the first round with a Hobey finalist really isn't getting the name out there that much. The real icebreaker is making a Frozen Four, FWIW. I doubt people are going to flock to NU because they had a goalie that was a Hobey finalist and lost in the first round of the NCAAs. But hey, you are living in Fantasy Land so it works out if we all just agree with you here.

Third... "the past few seasons?" Try last season. And minimally.

The fact of the matter is that no matter how small, this game would have helped an irrelevant program like NU and NU could use all of the little help it could get. It might be a gimmick (that we all recognize everyone would love to play in) and it might be a very minimal amount of exposure, but Northeastern would benefit from playing in this game and I think everyone else would agree that you're an absolute buffoon if you are happy that NU isn't a part of this. Of course being a consistent winner takes care of that but I don't think we have to worry about that. Thankfully.

No, but it does give potential recruits in Michigan, Wisconsin or Minnesota a chance to watch two elite eastern programs. Maybe they watch this, decide they like one or both teams' styles, decide they like the support they see, decide they like what the announcers are saying about both schools, decide Boston is a pretty awesome city, and suddenly BU and/or BC appear on their college radar instead of just Michigan, MSU, Notre Dame, UW, Minnesota, NoDak, etc.

No matter how you slice it, this game can only help. It can't hurt. Plus, as Nick pointed out, NU could use some national/Canadian exposure. You might call it a gimmick and think NU doesn't need it, but being able to bring in top recruits from Canada and the western US is what's gonna turn NU into a perennial contender, not their fanbase or the idea that they're on the right track. I know that NU is on the right track, but some recruit not familiar with NU is gonna look at the standings this season, see NU in 7th, and say, "Well, they're back to the bottom half. Last year must've been a fluke." Playing in this game and having more people talk about the program and the direction it's headed might convince them it wasn't.

Re: Frozen Fenway - BU / BC 1/8/10

I think a kid could see that BU has played at Fenway and twice at MSG in the past three years-so hell ya, something similar could very well happen while I'm there.

Just like a kid could see that Boston Arena just got a new scoreboard this year, so chance are in another 80 yrs they might get that 2nd fresh coat of paint. :p

I don't like it, but that's our reality right now. Which is why I don't care that NU's not involved in this game. No one off gimmick game is going to improve our reputation...that requires longer term success...more NCAA appearances...Frozen Fours, etc.

My excuse is that I'm a math major. :D

Great comeback to my post though!

Oh, good, glad we agree then.

Familiar with NU... Not familiar with NU... I think just about everyone looks at NU and says this. :D

Re: Frozen Fenway - BU / BC 1/8/10

BINGO ! Federal League , nice response, it is silly to think the teams involved have nothing to do with the hype and it would be the same with bentley or AIC or whomever...........

Re: Frozen Fenway - BU / BC 1/8/10

anyone know if beer will be sold?

I would imagine it would be. They sell it at the Garden for the Beanpot and Hockey East. If Fenway has the liquor license, I bet they will.

I'm assuming they will be keeping up all the added video boards. While watching the WC, I noticed a huge one on the monster and another next to the press box. I'm sure there were others.

Re: Frozen Fenway - BU / BC 1/8/10

wait was that a question involving the game?

that belongs on another thread i think..

wait, there's a game? I thought everyone was just going to show up and yell at each other about whose national title was better until the northeastern fans got there and then the stand up comedy show would begin and run until everyone froze - hence frozen fenway. frozen mentally and physically.

Re: Frozen Fenway - BU / BC 1/8/10

The "frozen" in the Frozen Fenway is to signify the fanboy tears that will be freezing on all of your fat little cheeks when BU loses. Tears mixed with facepaint will freeze a little less quickly but it won't take long in this weather anyway. :D

That Northeastern knucklehead really is a hoot, though! Point taken on that part of the post.

Re: Frozen Fenway - BU / BC 1/8/10

Is this game really sold out? I have a hard time believing that over 30,000 people want to watch this college hockey game. With the weather forecast the way it is, I'd be surprised if half the park is full.
