Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

Re: Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

And he's only an "honorary" Gunnery Sgt.

uaafanblog is an "honorary" soldier for native american interests, shows up for autographs and pictures but doesn't get into any of the real combat.:D

KIA: I'm afraid my advice is going to hurt your (self-declated) rep, but here goes:

To find information on the UND copyright of "The Fighting Sioux" I Google "Copyright Fighting Sioux." You could do the same, if your opinions permit.

As for your "I did." response, you "did" what? Are you being coy or copping out?

being coy.
as I said... if you wanna knowitall, you gotta learn some of it.
just because someone (or many people ) wrote on their webpages somethings about copyrighting Fighting Sioux, does not mean that there is any such copyright.
(or the UND could prevent me from using those 2 words on this page)

Our friend, the expert on copyrights and service marks, linked to a couple of articles and for the life of me I can't see the point he was making. There's nothing about copyrights or service marks in those articles. Personally, I think he must have a law degree from Sequoia University.

Isn't this the actual state of affairs at UND? If not, please explain which statement(s) is (are) in error, and why. If you wish to discuss Florida State, Indiana, Utah, Seneca Falls, or other such things please remember, this is a hockey forum, and the topic is the "Fighting Sioux."

The Fighting Sioux nickname is used by all sports teams at UND, not just the hockey team. The same applies to other schools with Indian nicknames, regardless of the sport. That makes it not just appropriate but necessary to include these schools in the discussion.

The "Valley News" citation states that UND is again licensing "Fighting Sioux" merchandise. You can't license what you don't own (copyright, in this case) - unless your customers are all morons.

The "Grand Forks Herald" citation reveals that UND student government voted against the North Dakota Legislature's attempt to continue use of (and copyright of) the "Fighting Sioux" name/logo.

Explain why the UND student body has no say in the "Fighting Sioux" affair, please?

Are you trying to tell me a vote of 10-8 involving 22 members of a student body of over 14,000 is suppose to really have any sway. I never once cared who was elected to the student government for Michigan Tech and I highly doubt many of those 14,000 students thought they were voting for who would speak for them in the Fighting Sioux debate...

In other news, the resolution states "This is in opposition to the manner (in which) these bills are written, not the Sioux logo."

No Old Pio is right that you are an idiot. A five minute search in the U.S. Copyright archives would have given you the copyright details which does not include the legislature but does include the University. Really? A news release from the GF Herald? Get a real source, dummy.

Go sell crazy somewhere else, we're all stocked up here.

I met Ermey in Okinawa Japan, pretty nice guy but he is a USMC homer.:p
Well, he made a pretty good career out of being one and then portraying one on film. And hell, his portrayial of Gunny Hartmann in FMJ pretty much raised the standards of swearing here. Tiffany cufflinks, gouging out eyeballs and then "using the hole, and the ever popular, "golfball thru a garden hose.".

The Marines have been good to him, as how its been for a lot of us with our respective schools. Of course he's going to have a hard on for the Marines. ;)

Plus, he's had a decent career in films: Seven, Mississippi Burning, etc. Didn't he also play a big deal sexual predator/murderer on "Law and Order SVU?" Another ex jar head who's done very well is Dale Dye. I interviewed him when he came back from Lebanon and he said he was heading to Hollywood to help improve the realism of films. He's done that (by training actors how to dig a slit trench and other worthwhile skills) and also had numerous on screen performances. Dale was proud of the fact that none of his journalists had been killed in the bombing at the Marine barracks in Beirut. He had ordered them to sleep with the guys they were reporting on--none of them were in those barracks. He had spent several years at the LA headquarters of AFRTS.

I would be very reluctant to cite the reults of the vast majority of undergraduate elections. Turnout is frequently in single digits and results can easily be manipulated by people on a mission from God. In my experience, the vast majority of college kids have zero interest in campus politics. Now, there was the time the students at Rice elected a refrigerator as homecoming queen, but that's the exception. Once in a while a student vote actually represents the views of the kids. At Illinois they had about a 40% turnout on a Chief referendum, with the students overwhelmingly supporting him.

It's good that the Sioux and the UND student body have you to correct their statements, positions, and votes. Who chose you for this job, or is it hereditary?

Weak, bordering on pathetic.

I only participated in one election at UND. The only reason I voted was because a guy that lived on my wing was running for president. IIRC, there was only a few hundred total votes...and he was pretty well known around campus.

UND students care more about where the party is that weekend than campus politics.

And the name of that UND udergraduate. . .the guy who gave up his partying ways to serve his fellow students. . .the guy who lived on Minnesota North Star's wing. . .the guy who was pretty well known around campus. . .the guy who changed the way Fighting Sioux undergraduates did their hair forever. . .was Al Sharpton. And now you know the rest of the story. :D
