Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

Re: Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

Let me correct the record. The other scientific poll on these issues was done by Annenberg. Among other findings: 91% of Indians polled in 48 states were okay with Washington Redskins. 91%! The findings of these polls are at variance with the endless assertions of professional Indians, who maintain their people ARE upset with Indian nicknames and symbols. Evidently not.

The "Fighting Sioux" logo/nickname is protected by copyright, applied for and granted. Nobody can use the "Fighting Sioux" logo/nickname without written authorization - and maybe royalty payments?

Defenders of the "Fighting Sioux" logo/nickname claim that a proper noun denoting a unique tribe, culture, or religion (I believe that "Sioux" qualifies as all three) is public property.

These same defenders claim that any organization can take such a proper noun identifying an unrelated organization, affix an adjective with dubious connotations, a graphic representation, and copyright the whole shebang. Even people belonging to the named group are barred from using this logo bearing their own name without written permission, and presumably royalty payments.

Isn't this the actual state of affairs at UND? If not, please explain which statement(s) is (are) in error, and why. If you wish to discuss Florida State, Indiana, Utah, Seneca Falls, or other such things please remember, this is a hockey forum, and the topic is the "Fighting Sioux."

"Shut up," he explained.

Re: Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

They form their government structures differently according to patterns of historical modes of elder leadership and ancestral/spiritual traditions.
Thank you for another wonderful lecture. Actually, the form of government under which the tribes operate is imposed by the BIA. That's according to an attorney and formal tribal judge. I trust that he is more familiar with the subject than you are.

You've never heard of the Sports Illustrated poll or the Fargo Forum poll? Google is your friend.

Re: Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

I cannot understand how so many got so little out of reading Huxley's "1984" [wink]
did they all just skim the Cliff Notes, too?
I heard on the radio that a man was arrested over in the UK for sending an email that included a term that derided a protected class. (well, it was a word that rhymed with a word... and as it turned out, he did not even send the email. Are we close to that YET in the US?)

Can the thought police please be crushed, sooner rather than later? This is the "first they came for the communists, and I did nothing because I was not a communist... then they came for the trade unionists/Jews... ... and then there was nobody left"
oddly the communists/trade unionists/Jews are coming for the thinkers and nobody but Old Pio is saying anything about it.

I've posted before about the graduate student at Nebraska who was hauled before some star chamber proceeding because a complaint had been made that he was "creating a hostile work environment." Seems he had a picture of a young woman on his desk. She was wearing a two piece bathing suit (of the kind that virtually all young women with the figure and some who don't, wear these days). And she was on a beach somewhere. A female graduate student (whose outrage detector had recently been serviced) had to pass by his desk once or twice a day and she ratted him out. Turns out the young lady in the picture was the guy's new bride and the photo had been snapped on their honeymoon. This lesbian harridan should have been "curbed," but I'm guessing nothing was done to her.

LOL, the SI poll was, literally, in all the papers. The Annenberg poll is not as well known (they don't own a magazine) but essentially confirmed SI's findings and addressed the phony "methodological" concerns raised by the disappointed true believers.

Re: Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

Opie:

I take it you find no error in fact among the reported circumstances of UND copyrighting the Sioux (+ "Fighting") name?

P.S. Please add Nebraska lesbians to the list of irrelevant discussions - unless you know someone intends to copyright this name for their DI hockey team. I really hope so.

Not quite, Mr. Berger. The truth is, I don't give a sh*t about this or any of the other irrelevant matters on which you claim to be an expert. The Nebraska incident, while not directly on point, does illustrate the PC mindset that some people are perpetual victims. And their victimizers are always white folks, especially male white folks.

"Fighting Sioux" is copyrighted. "Sioux" is not and could not be.

You and me, Pio. White, middle class American males - the downtrodden of the earth.

Maybe we should have a telethon. Anyway, stale, undergraduate sarcasm does not change the reality of life in America (and much of the world) these days.

We gotta "get Whitey."

wrong again.
re read what you wrote. YOU find the errors.

let me first ask you a question [because I am a pedant]... would you even know where to find "a copyright"?

I tried pointing you in the direction of A TRADEMARK/servicemark and I tried telling you why Sioux is just not gonna be "royalty worthy" nor is Mormon

also... while you are at it... find out what the federal policy is on "hostile and abusive" trademarks, if there is one.

and if there is, ask yourself why the federal government is willing to lend its courts to a person defending his/her hostile mark. (hint, they are not willing)
I know this is a lot of thinking and doing... but KnowingItAll sometimes requires actually LEARNING, not just yammering.

it is sad when the courts forget that one of the important operative words in "hostile workplace" legislation is "reasonable"

the workplace cannot be hostile under a "reasonable person" standard... not to a person who is unreasonalbly easily offended.
I tell ya, in May of 2004, I would have found anything Gold and Maroon around my workplace hostile... or a picture of Mike Hamilton's big toe... but that is just me.

The unintended consequence of PC is to empower the most easily offended people. And to encourage their mania. And when they complain, the whole creaking campus enforcement apparatus fires up. I've not heard of a single instance where somebody like our lesbian friend in Lincoln has been punished or sanctioned for filing a frivolous, mean spirited complaint. Sadly, the "reasonable" standard that applies in court is not mandated on college campuses. All complaints and all complainers are equal. And if we err, we must err on the side of PC.

During the fight over Chief Illiniwek at Illinois, one female Indian undergraduate complained that the mere existence of the Chief adversely affected her grades. I see, she's pulling an all nighter for her trig mid term, and Chief Illiniwek "causes" her to get a lower grade than she otherwise would have. And the PC mullets furrow their brows and nod their heads at the injustice of it all.

@knowitall: Thanks for correcting my incorrect use of the term "copyright" when I should have said "trademark." I know better.

Re: Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

KIA: I'm afraid my advice is going to hurt your (self-declated) rep, but here goes:

To find information on the UND copyright of "The Fighting Sioux" I Google "Copyright Fighting Sioux." You could do the same, if your opinions permit.

As for your "I did." response, you "did" what? Are you being coy or copping out?

I wish individuals who complain about "hostile workplaces" would have spent 6 months in the military at the billet of my choosing, same goes for the individuals who say the Fighting Sioux moniker is "hostile and abusive."

LOL. Can't you just see R. Lee Ermey welcoming them to another glorious day on "his" island?

"Why don't we just chug over to Namby Pamby Land to find you some self confidence, ya jack wagon."
