Fanboys and Superfrauds, 251st and 252nd Edition (12/3, 12/4)

Re: Fanboys and Superfrauds, 251st and 252nd Edition (12/3, 12/4)

First of all, no BU fans bought the #1 ranking. Not even the biggest fanboy. Second of all, nobody thinks BU is in BC's class this year. BUT, I like this team. They are young, have some good talent, usually get very good goaltending, and are capable of beating anyone on any given night. You've decided they are mediocre to suck. I think they had an awful weekend. They'll be on the bubble for an NCAA birth and may even win an NCAA game. Oh, and look out in February. Afterall, that game at the Garden is their "real" National Championship.

BU Hockey: Overrated and Underestimated

I know exactly what you mean. I've watched BU on tv several times and obviously saw both games this weekend but I was also able to go to the Maine game. The thing that stuck with me is that talent wise this BU team isn't up to where they usually are but they worked their butts off which is an easier team to appreciate.

Re: Fanboys and Superfrauds, 251st and 252nd Edition (12/3, 12/4)

way to go, pereira! that is the mentality! now i can see why parker wanted you as captain.

Did he honestly say that? If so, what a retarded comment (but certainly not surprised). Also found it funny that he said he doesn't cross the BC/BU line unless they're playing at Conte...where then does he find his women? ;)

It was hilarious to see Parker barking at the officials after the 2nd, a 21-11 advantage in powerplays isn't enough for you?

Ha, he was in top form last night, literally calling for a penalty at any hint of contact. As for the officiating, still don't like ticky tack calls like the one on Carey in the first when you go back and look at other stuff that went uncalled. Perhaps in calling it roughing the ref thought he got the BU player up high (which he didn't). Before that was the phantom call on Hayes/dive by Coyle, but the refs also missed a pretty clear slash IMO by a BC player on Warsofsky (not the one where Gibbons knocked the stick out of his hands).

Watching the replay right now, I'd love to see the giveaway numbers for Warsofsky he was close to hitting double digits in the first alone.

Watching it now on DVR myself. Just watched the first period and that turnover on the first goal was simply brutal. Gonna wait to see the replay of the Kreider goal, but would be interested to see how BU fans think he's progressed in his own end (we all know his talent at the other end).

Kept a close eye on Clendening last night and was not very impressed at all with his defensive game. Made some bad turnovers as well...only a freshman and I've only seen him once in person, so obviously hard to judge him.

Granted, BU was missing Connolly, but I just don't see any way they expect to be closer to us come Beanpot time.

Ya, Connolly is a nice player, but not a game breaker. No doubt he will help them, just not sure how much.

I'm glad you have it all figured out using a two game sample. In December.

Certainly not all figured out, but even when BU was off to the great start, I still thought UNH and Maine were better teams.

Does Kreider have motivation issues or something? Can he only get up for big games? Because every time BU and BC play, he looks ridiculous, but you look at the numbers and he's been disappointing in that aspect with some semi-lengthy scoreless streaks. I feel like he may be the second most talented player I've seen in Hockey East in recent years (Wilson), so I'm very surprised he hasn't dominated in a Wilson-as-a-sophomore fashion this year.

Then again, after watching him this weekend, I'd be completely unsurprised if he went on a major tear.

Good question. Not really sure to be honest with you. He definitely now has a reputation of playing well in big games. Guess I'll take that with some scoreless droughts rather than the reverse. If he does what he did last year though, he will indeed go on a tear.

Re: Fanboys and Superfrauds, 251st and 252nd Edition (12/3, 12/4)

This team reminds me a lot of the Terrier squad from my freshman year (2002-2003). Granted, the record was a bit different, but still...

http://www.uscho.com/rankings/d-i-mens-poll/2002-2003/poll,1209/december-9,-2002/

That team won the Beanpot, made it to the Hockey East finals, and the NCAA regional finals. At the start of the season, I anticipated that was the kind of BU team we'd get this season, with reason to be over the moon about next year. I still stand by that.

I will agree that even when BU was #1 the fanboys were making it known they really weren't the best team in the country. And sure they can beat anyone on any given night and have some young talent and usually get goaltending. But so does Merrimack, what do we take from that? I think a lot of teams can say that most years. There is a lot of parity lately in college hockey.

Usually Parker gets the most of his talent in these BC-BU games. To see BU get spanked like this has to raise an eyebrow. Sure BC is filthy but BU did not look good at all. Luckily there is a huge gap between BC and the next best team in HE so BU will be competitive in the rest of these games.

The point stands, BU is an upper-middle class team and doesn't seem like much of a national title threat. The only problem you and I have is that you think I based my opinion on this weekend and I am basing it off of the whole season's results (including what I saw this weekend).

Good luck in that February national title game. I have no doubt BU is capable of winning it.

Re: Fanboys and Superfrauds, 251st and 252nd Edition (12/3, 12/4)

A few other things in general and from the first period:

-Glad Eric Frede is doing these games. Always liked him and Sean Grande before him.

-Crowd: finally. That was the least amount of fans from BU I've seen at BC in a while. Good job BC fans! BTW, did BC get rid of the opposing fans section down in one of the corners and move it entirely to the upper deck by the student section? If so, another great move for game atmosphere.

-Samuelsson had one bad turnover that led to a Pereira chance. Passed it right to him.

-BU goal: Wey was a little out of position and there was no forward tracking Nieto...good bounce for the Terriers and I don't think Muse knew where the puck went.

-Key point in the period: BU on the PP up 1-0 and Muse absolutely stones someone in front preventing it from being 2-0 and quite possibly a much different game. Forget who it was now, maybe Gill on a feed from Coyle? I thought Muse was real sharp last night.

-What was with that "hand pass" called on BC when they were pressuring down 1-0? Looked to me like it just bounced off somebody's chest...is that a hand pass under the rules? Not only does it stop play but you then have a faceoff down the other end.

-Patrick Brown had a terrific shift showing good speed when he single-handedly broke the puck out of the BC zone and down the ice to relieve some pressure.

Re: Fanboys and Superfrauds, 251st and 252nd Edition (12/3, 12/4)

Is there a reason they didn't install a center ice scoreboard at Conte? I know that at Northeastern it was a structural thing. This totally a personal thing with me, but I hate not having a center ice scoreboard. Mullins doesn't have one either. Based on where our seats were, we could only see one of the boards, so if the action was in the net closest to where I was sitting, I had to look down the other end to catch how much time, etc. And when people tended to hang out and congregate on top of the stairs instead of actually going to their seats, they blocked my view. Was curious as to why an arena would be built without one.

he did, and he also said

I think maybe we didn’t come ready to play. We didn’t come focused

presumably refering to both games? link is here, you can tell me if i took him out of context

"We’ll be ready to go when it comes Beanpot time and playoff Hockey East. Right now, they can have these wins."

That's certainly not out of context...it's exactly what he meant. Maybe FL should ask Joe if BU was ready come Beanpot time last year and in the Garden against Maine...

I don't care how you slice it, saying "right now they can have these wins " is stupid.

The team that wins the Beanpot and HE Championship usually wins the NCAA.:)

Maybe self serving, not stupid

I think it was BC who said over and over agai that we don't care aout now, just after first of year after adjustments and when it counts. Talking about how BC gets going after first of year

Look at all these happy faces. I think this was after the 8th goal... it was hard to keep track.

I have a sweet video of Gibbons' penalty shot goal with a nice 8-10 second pan of the student section after he scored. Good stuff.

you've graduated, grow up.

Re: Fanboys and Superfrauds, 251st and 252nd Edition (12/3, 12/4)

that is just a crappy picture. first, it is out of focus. second, is that a finger at the top? third, we already have our crying bu fans picture

(here, i'll say it.... the worcester telegram and gazette needs to grow up!!)

it is a bit different when a fan says it vs when the players (especially the captain) do

Not really a big deal, but still a dumb comment. "Letting BC have these wins" could play a huge role in the standings/PWR

Exactly...not hard to understand.

Hokydad sure does love posting about BC though...

I think maybe they were a little shook a little bit, got a little rattled. There were a lot of pucks going off our sticks, not just freshmen but upperclassmen too. It was a good taste for them. We’ll be ready to go when it comes Beanpot time and playoff Hockey East. Right now, they can have these wins. We never want to lose versus BC but it’s still early in the year. That’s one thing I’ve learned. At the end of the year, those games matter more. As a team, we’ve got to learn from this weekend. You can’t take anybody lightly. Just keep building, come back and learn from this, grow and come back stronger.

That's the entire quote. That line came in the middle of that whole quote. To me, that quote (the entire quote) is not stupid. If you want to go ahead and pick out that one line, by all means. I'm not arguing he didn't say it. But when you give full context, I don't see how it's stupid. He also said this a little earlier in that same interview:

As a senior, obviously I think it’s one of the tough weekends. I don’t think I’ve ever lost two games back to back to BC. We have a lot of guys in the line-up, a lot of freshmen, a lot of younger players. It was a good step to see what college hockey’s all about for them. I do think that was the best team we’ve played all year, the fastest team we’ve played all year. Now we gauge ourselves and that’s where we have to be. Hopefully our next crack in the Beanpot or whenever we play them again, we’ll be ready to go.
