He's actually 100 percent accurate on his description, though the way the puck was cleared, it looked for like, 1/1000th of a second that BU could end up with a breakaway or at least an odd-man rush. Still, the play didn't warrant the amount of noise it generated. I'm not sure it really reflects that poorly on the fans*–– as you said, can't criticize for cheering too much –– but yeah, it was a funny moment to be listening to the fans.
I'm going to venture a guess that your description of the cheer enthusiasm is exagerated, or, something else happened in the crowd to prompt a cheer. I know in my student days at Maine, a good goalie razzing 1 liner could get a nice, sudden roar or laugh from the students --- even though other parts of the arena may not have heard it or known why.
