D3 Women?

Aurora wins 3-0 (ENG). With their first win as a program against Adrian comes in the NCHA Slaats Cup Semifinal. Aurora will play St. Norbert for the Slaats Cup and the NCHA's Pool A bid tomorrow.

Adrian put in their seniors, including the goalie Jandova, when Aurora scored the empty netter with a minute left. Aurora would get called for a penalty 15 seconds later to interrupt that moment.

The Spartans were clearly drained in the third but held firm.

The 600 mile bus limit comes into play with Aurora or SNC replacing Adrian.

Nazareth as the 4 looks to lose their QF bye to GAC in the projection, in which I'm penciling SNC as the higher remaining seed. I think this is the bracket with either team (assuming all else is the same):

First Round:

Endicott at Colby
Elmira at Nazareth

Quarterfinals:

Endicott/Colby at Midd
St. Norbert at Gustavus Adolphus
Eau Claire at River Falls
Elmira/Nazareth at Plattsburgh

Wow, what an upset for Aurora! How do you come up with matchups for the four western teams in the quarterfinals? (River-Falls, GAC, Eau Claire, and SNC/Aurora)

All the western schools are locked into quarterfinals regardless of seeds unless the committee chooses to make both western games playins and then winners meet Saturday in quarterfinals.

the reason why there is no east/west crossover in first round is because the committee is instructed to limit flights in early rounds regardless of bracket integrity.

Adrian always presented a “problem” because there were generally only a handful of schools or 1 school (in most cases Elmira) within the old 500 mile rule. For this only that has been extended to 600 miles.

Committee could choose to do both playins in West so they play down to one team and only have one flight for the tourney instead of 2.

Couldn't they only pay for 1 flight by having the teams meet somewhere within the range of both and have them share a flight like in 2013 (or was all three eastern teams sharing a charter a myth)? Also, if River Falls maintains the 2 seed and Midd gets upset in the quarters, RF would be first up to host, and then they'd have to get three eastern teams out there if they whittled down to one?

SNC is the first to punch their ticket, winning the NCHA with a 5-1 score over Aurora.

Middlebury advanced to the NESCAC championship by a 3-2 score over Hamilton.

Plattsburgh battling Cortland and the Cards are up 3-2 after 2 pds. Plattsburgh kept having to play catch up until Cheney put them ahead late in the second.

Aurora actually wins it 5-1. For some reason the score page shows the opposite score, but if you check the box score you'll see the upset!

Bubble Watch: Plattsburgh and Cortland are tied 3-3 with 5:40 left in the third....

Edit: Headed to OT...

Edit: Plattsburgh preserves the bubble spot by winning in OT 4-3.

We had upset number 2, where the #3 Amherst has defeated #2 Colby in overtime. If Middlebury wins tomorrow this probably leaves Colby with a Pool C bid, But if Amherst takes the title (and they've done this before), Middlebury takes their Pool C slot.

Middlebury wins the NESCAC, 2-0 over Amherst.

Based on the Pool A winners and the published PWR on USCHO.com, here is my final projected field for the tourney, seeded using that same PWR: [TABLE="border: 0, cellpadding: 0, cellspacing: 0"]

Using the above field, here is what I think the bracket would be based on trying to keep the integrity of 10-team single-elimination bracket but adjusting for a 600 mile limit and avoiding intra-conference in the first round.

Without rules, a 10 team bracket's quarterfinal should be:

(8 at 9) at 1
5 at 4
(7 at 10) at 2
6 at 3

Adjusting for the guidelines for this tourney I think they should do:

First Round

Endicott at Colby
Elmira at Nazareth

Quarterfinals

Endicott/Colby at Middlebury
Eau Claire at Gustavus Adolphus
Aurora at River Falls
Elmira/Nazareth at Plattsburgh

However, it looks like the bracket on NCAA.com for this tournament has been updated to show two first-round winners playing in one quarterfinal, so I think it looks like they will do as Prez suggested:

First Round

Aurora at River Falls
Eau Claire at Gustavus Adolphus

Quarterfinals

Endicott at Middlebury
Nazareth at Elmira
Colby at Plattsburgh
Aurora/River Falls vs Eau Claire/GAC

The selection show is tonight at 8:30 PM Eastern on NCAA.com

A friend pointed out to me an alternate bracket with two first-round winners playing each other in the quarters but with the first rounds in the East. That could look like:

First Round

Endicott at Plattsburgh
Colby at Elmira

Quarterfinals

Nazareth at Middlebury
Colby/Elmira vs Endicott/Plattsburgh
Aurora at River Falls
Eau Claire at Gustavus Adolphus

The scenario in my previous post would save the NCAA money assuming Midd advances and only one team would need to fly east for the semis/final. It does risk Midd being eliminated with River Falls being the host if they emerge from the quarters and three teams need to fly east.

Two eastern first rounds would guarantee an even east/west split in the semis though it would guarantee two teams fly to the host.

Would the NCAA really put regional equity above cost savings? Find out at 8:30 PM on NCAA.com

This would be pretty low by the NCAA. UWRF in a play-in game is pretty embarrassing. Yes, Middlebury is undefeated, but they have a gaudy record in one-goal games. If they somehow get tripped up in the quarters, I hope the NCAA pays through the nose for three East teams to come to western Wisconsin. HUGE risk by the NCAA here if this is true. River Falls and GAC will get the shaft yet again.

I've watched Midd. Despite not blowing teams out they are undefeated for a reason. They are that good and are a deserving #1.

#2 teams have had to play in the first round in the past. It depends on the makeup of the field.

UWRF in the first round and there is a case for that, there is also a case for the alternate scenario in my follow-up post. Having both first rounds out east takes away the uncertainty of potentially paying for 3 teams, though it does that at the expense of guaranteeing they paying for 2 to fly when they could make a reasonable gamble and only pay for 1 team. That would also protect the bye for 2-seed River Falls.

Though if they're guaranteeing two flights, they could do that by having one first-round winner to Midd and one to 3-seed Plattsburgh, like what my projection calls for. It protects the bye for the top 3 seeds and not just two, and still gives the west two shots at the region's first national tournament. Does anyone have a plausible reason for that where I don't have to sound like some other Plattsburgh fans who believe the NCAA is still trying to punish them for the 2017 alcohol incident? I haven't bought into that before but if they go with two eastern first rounds that play each other instead of two eastern teams with a bye would seem like they are targeting them.

Though maybe the NCAA/committee has its own PWR that uses slightly different formulae from USCHO and the seeds are different than what we're seeing?

I'm going to guess here that the Phinal Phour is going to be east regardless of whether Middlebury wins its game or not. If it were guaranteed to the highest seed that put in a bid, they should just say so. Barring that, I can't see them paying for three flights when they can easily just pay for one.

I've been talking about it being at the highest remaining seed because that's how it's been portrayed by the NCAA. On NCAA.com on the article about how to watch the selection show it says

The final site dates will be March 18-19, with the location being the home-ice of highest remaining seed.

Then on the article accompanying the selection show video it says this more ambiguous language:

The semifinals will take place at one of the four remaining institutions on March 18 and the third-place game and championship game March 19.

Maybe they are walking that commitment back.
