Lake Forest losing to St. Norbert puts Adrian on top of the NCHA again and brings back our 500 mile problems so the #10 seed gets to avoid the first round while #4 and #5 seeds are forced to play in the first round.

First round
GAC @ UW Eau Claire
Colby @ Endicott

QF
Nazareth at Plattsburgh
GAC/UW Eau Claire @ River Falls
Adrian @ Elmira
Colby/Endicott at Middlebury

The Cortland with the upset tie of Plattsburgh (3-3) could shake the PWR seeds up.

Doesn't seem to have hurt Plattsburgh in the Pairwise. Cortland now sits at #9 and is breathing down Colby's neck for the last Pool C spot....

Edit: Colby currently trails Hamilton 3-2 heading into the third...
Edit again: Colby comes back to win 5-4.

With today's action, Aurora leads the NCHA by one point.

If the season ended today the field would be:

Using PWR as seeds, following travel guidance, and as a bonus avoiding intra-conference until the championship game, the bracket for this field would likely be:

First Round:

Endicott at Colby
Nazareth at Elmira

Quarterfinals:

Nazareth/Elmira at Middlebury
Gustavus at UW-Eau Claire
Endicott/Colby at Plattsburgh
Aurora at UW-River Falls

The seeds have more integrity if Naz/Elmira goes to Plattsburgh and Endicott/Colby goes to Midd, but the above would save an NCAA tourney edition of Colby vs Midd or River Falls vs Eau Claire for the championship.

I wonder if Elmira secretly roots for Adrian to pull out the NCHA to avoid that first round game. It also means the QF game is home against Adrian instead of at Middlebury or Plattsburgh...

All that matters is avoiding intraconference matchups in the first round if it's possible. The NCAA committee would have no problem sending Naz/Elmira winner to Plattsburgh and Endicott/Colby winner to Middlebury even if that meant a potential Colby/Middlebury quarterfinal meeting.

Quarterfinals:

Endicott/Colby at Middlebury
Gustavus at UW-Eau Claire
Nazareth/Elmira at Plattsburgh
Aurora at UW-River Falls

Taking what Prez said about intra-conference only being frowned on in the first round is the only change to my projected bracket, moving the winner of Endicott/Colby to take on Midd and the winner of Naz/Elmira to take on Plattsburgh.

The remaining games between River Falls and Eau Claire will likely be a big factor in if one of them makes it to #2 at the end, possibly even #1 if someone upsets Midd.

The closest autobid races are the NEHC and NCHA.

The NEHC is tied on points between Norwich (the perennial champion) and Elmira (the perennial champion of the UCHC since it split from the ECAC West). They play each other this Friday. Norwich has a non-conference game with Connecticut College on Tuesday and then follows the game with Elmira with a game against William Smith. Elmira has a Saturday game with NEC as their only other game this week.

Aurora has a one point lead over St. Norbert, with Lake Forest and perennial favorite Adrian tied for third just three points back of Aurora. St. Norbert will visit Aurora and battle for first place in the standings tomorrow at 2 PM Central and Lake Forest visits Adrian for two games tomorrow and Tuesday (do they not have classes out in the midwest?). Then Aurora visits Adrian for 2 this coming weekend while Lake Forest visits 7th place Trine. SNC is inactive. Aurora will be inactive the final weekend of the regular season while SNC visits Adrian and Lake Forest has a home and home with 6th place Marian.

SNC takes the lead in the NCHA with a win over Aurora this afternoon by a 3-1 score. The two teams tied for third coming into today (Adrian and Lake Forest) drop the puck in less than 10 minutes.

The Home/Away games between Middlebury and Williams scheduled for this weekend: one has been canceled, the other rescheduled to Tuesday. The rest of the NESCAC schedule seems to be on pace.

With the field above, if Prez isn't right about the bus travel limit being 600 for this year it looks like there will be a quarterfinal flight as the only combination within 500 miles was putting Middlebury through to the semis and having three first-round games feeding the other three top seeds, and I am not sure the committee can send schools straight to the semis.

With 600 as the limit, I was able to cobble this valid bracket together:

First Round

Endicott @ Colby
Nazareth @ Elmira

Quarterfinals

(Endicott/Colby) @ Middlebury
Adrian @ UW-Eau Claire
(Nazareth/Elmira) @ Plattsburgh
Gustavus Adolphus @ UW-River Falls

More likely they do Adrian @Elmira as a Qf as they always do and GAC @ Eau Claire in the first round, with the winner going to Rival Falls for a QF… no flights before the FF…. Kills bracket integrity, but that’s always been secondary.

Plattsburgh's senior day gave a bit of clarity regarding returning seniors. Only two of seven seniors joined the fifth-year players in senior day ceremonies. My understanding is the other 5 will be using the extra year.

I also watched the River Falls vs Eau Claire game last night. Caught the last few minutes of the second and all of the third. Looked like a huge gulf between those two. Eau Claire couldn't get any sustained offense in the time I watched.

Watched the whole of the Williams Ephs vs Worcester State Lancers non-conference game. The Lancers looked outmatched, but were playing hard through the whole game. Does anyone know if the Lancers were working to join a league? This is their first year as a new program, but posting a 13-7-2 record seems pretty impressive.

When Becker (located in Worcester, MA) went under as a school, nearby Worcester State started a program as part of their plan to absorb as many students that wanted to continue their education there. Worcester State has the head coach, most if not all returning players plus some of the recruits from Becker. Worcester State offered guaranteed admission to all Becker students in good standing so the move made sense.

Upset in the NEHC. Castleton takes down Norwich 1-0. The Spartans have also played Elmira very closely. Whoever is the projected third Pool C for next week knows who they need to root against.

was going to be the same way if Norwich beat Castleton. Norwich had no shot at a Pool C this year.

Now that championship weekend is upon us, I was wondering if anyone had an updated bracket projection as of now?

Also, what teams do you all think could lose this weekend and still be a virtual lock to be chosen as an at-large?

I have the teams the same and the only update since my last bracket is that Elmira would play Plattsburgh on the road instead of hosting Adrian as they swap seeds with Nazareth [TABLE="border: 0, cellpadding: 0, cellspacing: 0"]

Just outside: Cortland (10), Amherst (11), Hamilton (12)

First Round

Endicott at Colby
Eau Claire at Gustavus

Quarterfinals

Endicott/Colby at Middlebury
Adrian at Nazareth
Eau Claire/GAC at River Falls
Elmira at Plattsburgh

I think all of the Pool A teams except Adrian and Endicott stand a good chance of making it as a Pool C if upset. River Falls is likely in no matter what as high up as they are.

I think Eau Claire is vulnerable to being passed if another loss to River Falls drops their RPI to where they lose some comparison points to teams they haven't played and have no common opponents. They would also be vulnerable if there are 2 or more Pool A upsets above the PWR rank that a win over River Falls gets them to.

Colby I think is in if they beat Amherst even if they lose on Sunday unless we see multiple Pool A upsets. I think if they lose to Amherst, Amherst becomes the final Pool C that has to await any of the other schools being upset.

Hamilton upsetting Middlebury tomorrow would do the most to upset the projected bracket.

There's actually a lot of unpredictability this year in conference finals:

- Castleton and Elmira have played close in the regular season and they play for the NEHC.
- Cortland tied Plattsburgh the last time out and play for the NEWHL tomorrow. Cortland's freshman goalie, named the conference's Rookie and Goalie of the year was red hot against Oswego.
- GAC is split for the regular season with Hamline and those two play for the MIAC.
- Nazareth and Manhattanville had a pair of 3-2 Naz victories in the regular season so not a lot of room there.
- Endicott has two wins but does have a loss against their opponent UNE in the CC championship.
- Adrian will play St. Norbert if they beat Aurora this evening. They beat Aurora 4-0 and 2-0 so I think they're favored tonight but they only have one-goal victories on SNC. If Aurora upsets Adrian they have a split against SNC but that was on SNC's ice and this will be at Arrington.
- Middlebury has a 4-goal win and a one-goal win on Hamilton, but the four games combined against the other side of the bracket in the NESCAC are all one-goal wins. While I'm skeptical anyone beats them based on how they've looked when I watch them, on paper there's not much separating them from those other 3 and whoever wins the NESCAC has to win two games.

Aurora up 1-0 against Adrian in the semifinal about 3/4 through the second. The Spartans are playing with intensity, do they have the legs? And will Adrian's infamous extra 4 skaters in stripes rear their ugly heads?

EDIT: to be fair to the zebras, they just made their first two calls and they went against the Bulldogs

EDIT: 2-0 Aurora on the powerplay.
