D3 Women?

Middlebury has bought out all of the tickets to the championship weekend and will make them free to all spectators. They are doing this to recognize 50 years of Title IX. Tickets must still be picked up at the box office even though they are free.

Spectators must be vaxxed and boosted, but it looks like they are changing to make masks optional.

A bit off topic…
Anyone on Twitter know why @CardinalsWHKY hasn’t posted since November? Is there a different acct? Thx

I think it's in control of one of the players and whoever that is doesn't use Twitter very much. They're not very active on Instagram either, especially compared to other teams in DIII.

Thx Scott, their acct had always been updated until this winter :-/ Hoping for the W Friday, but this team has had more of its fair share of squeakers/OT games. Does not quite feel as threatening as other Cards teams. The cancelled Middlebury game would have been very telling.

After 1, Gustavus leads 2-1. Plattsburgh took the lead on a shot from Killeen tipped in by Olshanksky. GAC followed up scoring on a discombobulated play to tie and took the lead on a great pass by the Gustie forward behind the net. She passed the opposite direction she was skating on what she sold as a wrap around attempt and caught the open forward at Beaubien's right.

Gustavus controlling a lot of play early. Plattsburgh also having bad luck where multiple offensive draws came when their top six were tired and the bottom six took offensive draws.

Plattsburgh has just been completely outplayed in this game. The waived off goal definitely hurt, but the Cardinals' issues in goal have reared it ugly head one last time.

Plattsburgh has changed goaltenders down 4-1. Davis now in net.

Goalies changed after the goal was overturned. The shorty was scored on Davis. It was the right call as Beaubien's demeanor was down after that game tying goal after Plattsburgh took the lead and didn't recover.

If any team can complete the comeback it's Plattsburgh, but it would take a major turnaround in play for that to happen.

A lot of talk deservedly about Middlebury's defense, but GAC led DIII in shutouts for a reason.

Gustavus Adolphus finished out 5-1 for the final to advance to the championship game.

After 2 periods, Middlebury leads 2-1. It was a fairly even 1st with Midd peppering chances here and there and Elmora not stringing much together in terms of offensive chances until late.

A bit more separation in the second. Appleyard from Middlebury opened scoring but Elmira's Beaudin answered soon after to knot it at 1. Middlebury's top rookie Quinlan then scored a great goal striding and deking the goalie to give them their current lead. After that Middlebury started to outplay Elmira more in terms of puck possession and cutting off chances.

Leidt added a third goal to make it 3-1 for Middlebury. Riva cut it to 3-2 but it was too little too late against the stingiest team in the league.

Gustavus Adolphus vs Middlebury for the championship tomorrow at 7pm. We'll either have the first perfect season or the west region's first NCAA champion.

Third place game will take place prior, Elmira vs Plattsburgh. They split the regular season 1-1.

Third place game is 2-2 after two. It's hard to extrapolate from a third place game, but both teams seem to be fighting for it.

Elmira took an early lead on an Elfring shot from the circle in the first and led until the second when Nicole Unsworth would score early in the second. Elmira would take the lead back on a numbers advantage not long after. Plattsburgh would get a power play on a Sydney Harris slashing and Ivy Boric would knot it on that power play.

With Plattsburgh able to play Elmira close and Elmira having played Midd close last night, GAC could surprise the hosts this evening.

I don't like D3 hockey played on an Olympic sized rink. Does anyone know why Midd built their rink that size back in the day? Did they hope to play D1 or in the Olympics some day?! Makes no sense.

Who are the play-by-play and color commentators?

Plattsburgh wins the Third Place Game 3-2. An Ivy Boric goal was disallowed but Annie Katonka scored a few minutes later.

It's 95 wide and not the 100 for olympic. I know semantics but still.

Also, Middlebury's men's team was always fast and ran a very unique "torpedo" style offensive system with basically two forwards and three defenseman. The big ice really benefited their high-end forwards and gave them lots of room to cause fits for opposing defenses. I'm sure that factored into their decision.

Steve Vecchione was the PbP and Tara Connolly (RPI assistant, former Colby women's hockey player) was color.

Fitting end to Katonka's career as an unbelievable clutch/big-game goal scorer. Plenty of opponents aren't going to be sad to no longer have to deal with 47 next year.

Even in a "down year" for Plattsburgh, the Cardinals still finish third place. Unbelievable run of success for Coach Houle and the Cardinals. Plattsburgh still looking for its first NC though without Danielle Blanchard as a player or coach as part of it.

Midd is leading at the start of the second. Breakaway shot was sent 5 hole by a Panther.

While commenting on Kenyon, what gets me is as nice as that complex is they built it to where the visitors have to cross the ice to get to their own bench. Just seems like designed pettiness that should have been beneath an institution of their wealth and prestige.

Gusties score a 6x4 PPG at 19:59.9 of the 3rd to tie it at 2.

Replay looks like the puck went in before the buzzer.

Mandigo looked like he was losing his mind that he couldn't manipulate the refs on that late goal by Gustavus. Video showed puck hit the netting with .1 second to play which means it probably crossed the goal-line with .2 seconds remaining, so it was definitely a good goal. Before that I couldn't believe the Gustavus coach didn't pull his goalie for a 6th player with the face off in Midd's zone after the delay of game penalty was called. He almost cost his team the chance for OT. They got very lucky. If Gustavus wins the Midd player who took that late penalty is going to feel awful. Momentum and puck luck is with Gustavus right now as they head into OT. I expect them to be super-charged when they hit the ice for sudden-death/victory!

And what's with the baseball cap on a head coach?! I've never seen that on any other head coach at the college level. Is he even wearing a tie? Where's the professionalism in how he dresses??

Midd wins at 13:17 of overtime. Varney(?) picks up a TD pass (was she onside?) and shoots and buries the rebound.

Disappointed for GAC. Played so strongly all weekend, even outshooting the unbeaten hosts. Scored the most clutch goal of all time only for it to be wasted on a loss.

When I saw Middlebury at the Cardinal-Panther I was skeptical that anyone could beat them and it was unfortunately true.

All time great season for Middlebury, the first perfect season in DIII women's ice hockey from what I can see as even Plattsburgh 07 had tie games.

This one is dedicated to our old friend Obserbear
