D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

........and there is no presumption by Norwich that they are 'on their way' to a National Title. They need to earn it.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

It's playoffs....you never take your foot off the gas...sheesh...ever played hockey before?? (Competitive hockey that is!!)

I also agree that it would be inappropriate for Norwich to back off in those games. Not from the standpoint that they would be disrespecting the opponent, but more from the standpoint that if they get in the habit of "turning it off" it becomes that much harder to "turn it back on" when playing in the NCAA's. Lets face it, aside from a loss to Manhattanville in last year's final, and a tie with Salve this year, Norwich pummels everyone in their conference. If they had to turn it off to be nice, they would be doing that about 16-18 times per year. If my reading of stats is accurate, Norwich's goals for/against in conference this year was 129-7. Out of conference was 33-21. I would like to think that part of playing a college sport is winning, but a bigger part is to compete against the best. How much fun can it be when you know that 75% of your season schedule is going to be comprised of games where you will have an average of 7-0 winning margin (actually 129-7 computes to 7.17-0.39)?

I'm not knocking Norwich. I'm sure Coach Bolding and his players would prefer to be in a more competitive conference. Maybe we should be less excited about new programs opening up. Maybe there should be fewer, more competitive programs out there.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

I don't get this Norwich team or maybe I don't get the coach.
You are leading 6-0 ,after two periods, outshooting their opponent, 32-4. An opponent , you have beaten this season 9-0.
Then in the third period, you take 20 shots, now outshooting your opponent ,52-5, and score twice with 2 minutes left to finish 8-0.
What was the point, to embaress Nichols, pad stats ? And don't give me the " we can't tell the kids not to score" line.
This is a very good hockey team , maybe the best in talent in the country but that isn't all what DIII hockey is all about.
It is about how you play the game and win with class. I hope the coach feels good about the "convincing" win on his way to a National title, I'm pretty sure I know how the Nichols coach and players feel.

2 Things--The Norwich Coach had switched to their back-up goalie, clearly had let up.

#2 It's not like Fortier and DeBus scored the goals late in the game. Nobody who had an assist or goal on those two had started the game...were their 5th and 6th goals of the season...did you watch the game...maybe they weren't really trying to score but the Nichols back-up goalie didn't make easy saves on dump ins....I didn't watch the game and don't know, but I wouldn't assume that they were actively trying to score....this discussion comes up with the RIT-Plattsburgh/CHATHAm game every year...Its not like when you have the other team so outmatched that you just give up trying to do anything at all.

I'm more surprised that their is so little discussion of Elmira's epic fail yesterday. They definitely have no business being in the NCAA's with this loss. If you are in that conference top 3and you lose in the quarters that is really sad.

Yeah,I played four years of varsity college hockey. Obviously, from your astute comment, hockey was never your game.you might want to watch a game sometime or even better put on a pair of skates.Ta"Take your foot of the gas" even when you are up 6 goals to a team that had taken 4 shots? Unbelievable !
it is a good sport, let's keep it that way

Sorry sport, but when playoffs start, it's no time to be practicing being nice. You're preparing for the Conference Finals and ultimately the Final Four. Being nice to an inferior team during playoffs is not a wise strategy. Bad habits can develop. You have to play with intensity at this time of the year. It's not a time to be letting up.

And BTW, I've played more hockey games than you've ever watched, so I kind of know a bit about the game.

The ECAC West is getting better every year. Oswego, Neumann, Utica, and now Potsdam are all at the point where they could steal a game with a hot night from their goalie and a less than stellar effort from RIT/Platty/Elmira. Look at the disparity in shots in the Elmira/Potsdam tilt; every appearance is that Potsdam got outplayed in every facet (except the one that counts).

I agree. RIT and Platty better be ready next weekend. Sometimes having this much time off is not a good thing. Rust can develop...intensity and momentum can dwindle. It's gonna be an interesting tourney though.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

On that note, why was Elmira playing their backup goalie?
Did they take this game a little too lightly?

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

So does Elmira hang up their equipment for the year, or is an at-large bid still possible? Their losses, with the exception of yesterday were against RIT (2), Platts, Norwich and a tie with Middlebury. Tough teams!!

I would think that they would be done. Losing in the semi-finals but this loss has to kill them. There is still a strong chance however that the NCAA is full of poo and will put them in over a 3rd western team, if the rest of the favorites win out, because they don't want to fly a team for the first round of the playoffs...actually a fairly strong possibility. It would just show the whole process is a joke anyways.

I still think the only way 3 west teams get in is if Gustavus gets upset in the MIAC title game. I don't think UWRF would still make it when they get beat by UWS in the O'Brien finals :)

Edit: I like how I just said Elmira was out...and then explained why they would be in..haha

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

In the eyes of the NCAA, losing a quarterfinal, semi, or final is not different than losing any other game; they look at the body of work as a whole. So if Elmira has a better resume, they can still get a bid.

Generally in the past, with the D3 selections teams that lost early in the conference playoffs have not faired well in selection.

This has been most common in the ECAC-W--usually two of RIT/Elmira/plattsburgh have met in the semi-finals...pretty much whoever won that game made the NCAA's and whoever lost was out. Since the tourney went to seven teams i'm almost certain their has always been 2 ECAC-W teams in the tournament.

Or see Lake Forest 2 years ago...were 19-2-4 (18-1-4 in the NCAA's eyes) going into NCHA semi's lost to UWS and they knew their season was over. Amherst got in over them at 20-5...and went on to win the Title

Right now Concordia-MN and Elmira are pretty even in the comparison...If Concordia were to lose to Gustavus in this MIAC title game...they really should get in over Elmira...but that most likely wouldn't happen. Remember this isn't D1 where they go strictly by the numbers, the people decide who is in and who is out based on travel

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

For those interested, here are my projections based on this week's results.

If I understand your prediction, you have Middlebury winning NESCAC which means they beat Amherst (most likely, unless Bowdoin surprises them) and you still have Middlebury at Amherst in the qurter finals? Also, does the NCAA do what they can so that the teams from the same conference do not play in the quarters?

First off teams do not now or have not ever been embaressed by the other team. Nichols is a fairly new program and has come a long way. They and this part is an assumption played hard and worked until the end. It is a sign of true character that they played to the end and did not quit on themselves. As in all sports we play even on your worst day something positive happens to bring you back to play again. I am sure that these girls will learn from this and continue to play hard. They also were aware that this could happen when they signed up to go there. But they went because the school is a good fit for them. They also have been key in bringing a new womens hockey team to the school. Imagine the pride in being one of the first teams in the schools history some of these girls played in the schools first game ever. The pride of that will certainly make a loss like this seem like a bump in the road. They have paved a path for the next group of players to come in. They have much to be proud of and have done well for their school. I would bet most would say being one of the first was a very satisfying time in their life. I will also bet most went there with hopes of getting further then they have but understand that the goal was set high not low and willing to bet none of them would ask for anyone to let up on them. I have no connection to this progam at all but I am a fan hard not to be the character it took for them to take nothing and turn it into a team makes them some of the biggest winners ever to play the game.

You would be correct, and if things were to play out that way, obviously it would be flipped with Midd hosting. I have it the way I do because currently Midd is the #1 seed in the NESCAC, which is why I gave them the AQ. However in the current NCAA rankings, (and also in my projections for this week) Amherst is ahead of Midd. So while Midd was given the AQ Amherst is ahead in seeding. That said, that will obviously change if Midd wins the NESCAC.

Thanks for the clarification. Are you or anyone else able to shed light about quarter finals and teams from the same conference not playing against each other?

Teams from the same conference can and have played in the NCAA Quarterfinals and the NCAA does not go out of their way to avoid it.
