D3 scores 2014-2015

Re: D3 scores 2014-2015

Man, there seems to be a lot of haters on the Eastern teams in the USCHO D3 poll this season. Seriously, how does:

- an Adrian team that really hasn't played anybody of substance and just tied this weekend a middling UMB team end up ahead of Conn College (beat UMB 7-0 and undefeated as well), Amherst, and Bowdoin?
- a St. Thomas team that also hasn't beaten anyone of substance and lost to Concordia and tied St Marys (and lost to UWRF - I'll give them that one as they held it close) also end up ahead of the 3 NESCAC schools?
- UW-Superior get the same number of votes as Conn College and Bowdoin even though they have only 1 significant win (over UWSP), are 1-3 against ranked teams, and gave up 7 goals to Marian and went to OT against St Marys?
- For that matter, how does Amherst end up ranked higher than Conn College (and even Bowdoin although that is closer)....

Are the voters even looking at the results - it appears they are voting on reputation and last year's results....

Re: D3 scores 2014-2015

100% agree with you - and I rarely do that with anyone.
Not sure if its SID's doing the voting or just lazy coaches who are "too busy" to do some research. Is DIII hockey down that much where UST moved up a spot after splitting with a 2-7 team? UWS still getting some viotes although they squeak out a 8-7 win against a 3-8 team?

Are there enough East vs West games to come up with a solid ranking? Seems the sample size is to small.

This. It will all pan out when conference tournies come around anyways. I take any hockey polls in both men and women with a salt of grain.

well...in early Jan you have several nescac teams going out west...that should be the proof in the Puddin....If, as I suspect, the nescac teams do more than hold their own...the Pollsters will be hard pressed to keep up their silly games...:p

Re: D3 scores 2014-2015

The computers do not seem able to achieve a consensus either:
http://www.uscho.com/rankings/krach/d-iii-women/
http://math.bd.psu.edu/faculty/rutter/D3_Rankings.html
Conn College is #25 on the Rutter and #9 on KRACH
Amherst is #8 on Rutter and #7 on KRACH
It will be interesting to see how Bowdoin, Conn, Trinity and Williams fare out west coming off the break and all those sugar plums. We probably put more stock in the results than the coaches do. I am sure they are more interested in getting ready for the long campaign that awaits their return east.
Merry, Merry and Happy, Happy to all the players, coaches and parents (fans?) everywhere!!!

Those Rutter Rankings are not accurate. I know the date up top has changed, but those rankings are pulling last seasons data and they have not changed over the course of this entire season, even though the "thru games on xx/xx/xx" has continued to update.

Re: D3 scores 2014-2015

Two scores from Arrington:

Connecticut College 3
St. Olaf 2
Final-OT

Adrian 3
Williams 1
Final

Re: D3 scores 2014-2015

Brutal result for Conn. It must be tough to swallow a 9-0 score as the first loss of the season. I know it was just a NC game but why leave a goalie in for 7 goals against? Probably should have made the switch no later than the end of the first period but maybe that was too logical of a hockey decision for the coach to figure out.

Re: D3 scores 2014-2015

I was also surprised that she started the 2nd period as well. She went out at 7-0 and the backup gave one up on the first shot she faced, too.

Re: D3 scores 2014-2015

Never been impressed by her coaching ability or hockey IQ. Honestly hard to believe she's been there so long.

Re: D3 scores 2014-2015

Adrian has plenty to deal with at the moment, with the upcoming trip to Gustavus and St. Mary's.

Re: D3 scores 2014-2015

I'm thinking after this weekend's results that Adrian & Middlebury should be switched in the Poll. For sure Adrian moves into top 5. Con College has not lost in conference where Middlebury has & Adrian sweeps the NESCAC. Marian loses in a close game to Trinity. The NCHA appears to be a top 3 conference.

Adrian certainly had a great weekend beating NESCAC Williams (3-1) and Conn College (the 9-0 blow out of all blow outs). I am sure they will move up from their previous #9 spot and may well jump St.Thomas (who lost twice to NESCAC foes Bowdoin and Trinity) and possibly UWRF and UWSP. Let's talk top 5 after we see their result against Gustavus. I saw the Middlebury-Elmira tie on Saturday and the Panthers look to me a pretty solid #4. They played the Soaring Eagles a vastly better game than their loss back in November. The Norwich@Elmira game Sunday should be worth watching (although I am told people had trouble watching the Midd-Elmira webcast yesterday).

no video of the game [lame from the hosts]...but I agree. Hard to figure out what happened there. Team hasn't been beaten like that in a long time...most recent losses have been close games. Not sure you can call 9-0 a 'fluke' but I don't think the score was indicative of the actual difference between the two teams [just do some comparison of common opponents and even the Williams/St. Olaf game which was basically a 1 goal win, same as Conn [who also hit 4 posts vs. Olaf]...my guess is Conn would do much better in a rematch.

As for handling the goaltending...I totally agree. You can't put the poor kid back in there after giving up 5 in the first [not saying they were her fault but team needed a reaming and a goalie change to start the 2nd period]. Also makes it much harder on the replacement to come in 100% cold off the bench mid-period...the goal scored on first shot, 10 sec. after the switch could have been expected. Not exactly a Scotty Bowman move. :(
