Does anyone else here miss the days (not that long ago) when we had games between top D3 teams and lower level D1 teams? It was always an interesting way of calibrating the differences between D1 and D3, and typically the very best in D3 could hold their own against the weakest D1 teams. Would that still be the case? I think that it would, but it has been so long since that has been tested that it is tough to tell. Opinions?
I don't think any D1 teams would go for it. They would have nothing to gain and everything to lose just like when D3 teams play college club teams.
Elmira's second season ever in 2002-03 when the Soaring Eagles won their second straight national championship, their only four losses were to Wayne State and Findlay. Both now defunct D1 teams. IIRC, those two were at best middle of the pack if not toward the bottom of the D1 ranks.

Interesting that Elmira is still getting a couple of first place votes after losing to the Cardinals this weekend. I'd love to hear the reasoning behind that. Yes, I know it's early and these polls don't mean much. I'd still be interested in hearing what those voters were thinking...
As we were watching Sunday's game I felt Elmira was outplaying Plattsburgh. Then they took the penalty late in the 2nd, the Cardinals came out and converted the powerplay and went on to a dominant 4-2 win. Hard to imagine voting for anyone but Plattsburgh as #1!
Thanks to Gustavus Adolphus for coming out and going toe to toe with the eastern powers. A great way to end the Thanksgiving weekend and thanks to Coaches Houle and Mandigo for putting on the Cardinal/Panther!!!
Hey Oser....missed your more detailed accounts of the games over the weekend!! In your opinion, how do the four teams look going into the break? Is Platty a threat or a pretender? Why does Elmira keep getting 1st place votes? Why can't a Western team win a game east of Michigan?? Inquiring minds want to know.
IMO Plattsburgh is the real deal. The way they were able to come back from what must have been an unsettling outcome Saturday, get challenged by Elmira Sunday and then turn it on and seal the deal with the three 3rd period goals shows they have a lot of heart. The only issue for the Cardinals is Aveson graduated and maybe they get dinged along the way. Elmira is a threat; they made it look easy beating Middlebury and certainly were not a walk over for the Cardinals. Nelson was 51/56 for the weekend against #5 and #1 and she seems to be the Soaring Eagle go to net minder. Middlebury has talented 1st years, is putting them on ice in key situations and is expecting a lot from them. They have changed their system and it is taking some time for everything to come together. Panther goal play needs to become more consistent. Gustavus Adolphus showed they belonged in the Cardinal/Panther. Hibbard (63/70) was the best goalie on the ice this weekend and her play against Plattsburgh almost carried the day. Hard to understand the east of Michigan issue. I watched a couple of games on the stream yesterday and it is amazing how much higher the level of play was over the weekend.
