D3 Hockey is back!

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Superior at St Thomas tonight.

Should be a pretty good game. Will let us know if Superior is legit this year or not. I mean they did outscore Finlandia 16-1.

I'm not sure if there will be video. When they played River Falls the video link showed up at game time here: http://www.tommiesports.com/sports/wice/2015-16/schedule It's my birthday so I'll be out having fun, so if anyone watches and could post updates I'd appreciate it :)

Hey, Happy Birthday to you!

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Nice crowd to see Elmira's home-opener against Cortland, announced at 539, and I don't think there was any "home-cooking" to that number. Great to see that many fans come-out and support these ladies.
Cortland played well... physical play, but just couldn't match-up against an "increasingly-seasoned" Elmira team. The term "increasingly-seasoned" is key here... as Elmira continues to "gel", they will only improve. To sum-up what I saw in one game in one word... "Impressive".

Cheers!!!

The difference between Elmira on Saturday and Sunday of the East-West Hockey Classic was unbelievable. If they keep that same trajectory of getting better everyday and improving throughout the year they will be a factor at the end again.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

There are a lot of weak teams out there. If you've beaten any of the teams on this list don't get too excited about your season just yet because they simply aren't good teams but if you want to pad your schedule with easy wins next year make sure to get these teams on your schedule:

From the new CHC
Becker
Canton
Daniel Webster
Johnson & Wales
Salem State
(probably Morrisville too)

From the ECAC West
Chatham
Cortland
Neumann
Potsdam
William Smith

From the MIAC:
Augsburg
Hamline
St. Benedict
St. Catherine
St. Mary's
St. Olaf
(possibly Bethel too)

From the NCHA
Finlandia
Marian
(possibly St. Norbert too)

From the new NEHC (former ECAC East)
New England College
Nichols
Plymouth State
Southern Maine
St. Michael's
University of New England
(possibly UMass Boston too)

From the NESCAC
Hamilton
Wesleyan
(possibly Colby too)

From the WIAC
Eau Claire
(possibly Superior too)

Playing any of these teams does nothing to add any quality to your Strength Of Schedule. It does the opposite.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

The key is scheduling the teams that are going to get a lot of wins against teams like this so their W% is high and they have a chance of getting regionally ranked...

I'm looking at the Uticas, Castletons, Salve Reginas etc.

Curious as to why you include St. Norbert as a possible weak team - it's very early in season. For the past three years they've been regionally ranked. SNC graduated only 2 players. Last year with a very young team was another strong year that included wins against ranked teams. They return an All-Conference goalie (sophomore) and another capable goalie along with the rest her classmates. Looking at box scores thus far it suggests they're in every game.

SNC may have "been in every game" but looking at the box scores, they're giving up too many goals.
4-5-5 GA with no EN's - Is too many.

Yes, plus I was going by history of the programs, early results so far this season, coaching changes or the lack of coaching changes, experience of coaches, etc. If I'm wrong about more than 2 or 3 teams on that list I'll be shocked. In general if you want a nice soft cushy schedule with some guaranteed wins, play against those teams.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Plattsburgh feasts on cupcakes early in the season and it doesn't seem to hurt them.

They played Norwich and Adrian the first weekend of the season, then they went to league play. There's not a single non-conference game scheduled against a team on shelfit's list.

The last time they played a team on that list in non-conference play was when they faced SNC in the NCAA tourney in March 2013. The last regular season cupcake game I remember was them drubbing Salve Regina at home in early 2010, and Salve Regina isn't even on shelfit's list. The last non-conference regular season game against a team on that list was in January 2008 against Hamilton.

Plattsburgh doesn't schedule cupcakes unless they have to because they are an ECAC West school. They cannot force the other teams of the ECAC West to get better, that's on them to improve as programs. They cannot force 9 other good programs to leave their conferences and form a Conference of Death, and that wouldn't be good for the sport (more specifically NCAA DIII) if they could.

ok, I get it and agree to a point...but you really can't lump the 2-3 NESCAC teams into this bowl of slop.
First of all, none of them have played a single game yet, so relax until they've at least laced 'em up.
Second, unlike most of the D3 leagues out there, the NESCAC's "weak sisters" are not really that weak....Hamilton or Colby would finish in the top half of every other conference year in, and year out and even lowly Wesly is capable "on any given weekend" of beating nearly anyone.

You are right. I forgot that there is no SUNYAC in women's hockey and that they are ECAC W. Their cupcakes are league games and their ooc games (Elmira, Norwich, Middlebury, etc.) are their tough ones. They don't seem to have much trouble either way.

Here comes the NESCAC is awesome crap again...

If I'm any other team not on my list, I'd put Wesly, Hamilton, and Colby on my schedule in a heartbeat.....if I'm looking to add more wins to my overall record that is. The odds are very high that I'd win those games and it would be a disappointment if the results were not wins. In other words the rest of the teams not on my list are "supposed to" beat the teams that are on the list.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

I just saw the rankings for this week. Who does those? Is it every coach in Division 3? Or just a panel of coaches? How did Adrian, who got quite the spanking from Lake Forest over the weekend, end up as #4 and Lake Forest as #6? And how did Elmira, who got almost a similar spanking from Adrian, end up higher than both of those teams? And once again, we're back to the fact that Norwich can just lose to ranked teams, beat no one of consequence, and still have their name in the top 10.
I've followed D3 hockey a bit (less since my daughter graduated) and it seems to me that whoever does these rankings almost ranks teams based on "paying their dues" and "past performance", rather than the reality of the scores in the here and now. It's disappointing as I know that players and recruits look at these rankings and sometimes those recruits make their college decision based on them.

you are 100% correct. There is very little rhyme or reason to most of these 'rankings"...and usually seem to be based not on "now" but on somebody's memory of who was good in year's past.

"any other team"? Ok, you do that and guess what? Half or more of those "any other teams" will lose. Again....you're lost if you think Colby or Hamilton is anywhere near as bad as Daniel Webster, Salem State, St. Mikes, etc. Just plain lost.

oh, and just for the record, "weak sister" results last year were:

Wesly 8-14-1
Hamilton 10-11-4
Colby 14-11

and Colby and Hamilton, the #7 and #8 seeds both nearly pulled off huge upsets in the conf. tournament against highly ranked teams....so my point is, the nescac is a whole different animal than the other leagues out there...a strong conf. from top to bottom.
