D3 Game Updates 2012-13

Just so you know, Plattsburgh was in the finals three straight years...winnng it twice in a row....take a deep breath!!

No I realized that....I was simply implying that for a team that was only 3 years old to be in the finals was a bit of a surprise and to be there in 3 of your first 5 years as a program, Is pretty good as well.

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

Utica always plays Plattsburgh tough. I thought this might be a real test...attendance was well over 500 for this game too...impressive!

Plattsburgh State rallies for tie against Utica

PLATTSBURGH — In 18 of its first 20 games, the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team scored two or more goals in a period.

Saturday night, however, it needed to do so in the final 20 minutes of regulation to keep its unbeaten streak in tact.

The No. 1-ranked Cardinals (19-0-2, 11-0-1 ECAC West) received third-period markers from Chelsea VanGlahn and Shannon Stewart, erasing a 3-1 Utica College lead, for a 3-3 tie at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

“We’re upset that we didn’t come out the way we wanted to,” coach Kevin Houle said. “Though, we were happy with the effort from the second half of the game on to battle back and tie it up. It would have been a tough loss.

“We’ve been able to battle back all year, and we were able to do that again (Saturday), but we certainly need to come out quicker. We just can’t let teams take the game to us, which is what Utica did.”

After Teal Gove netted a goal on the game’s first shot at 18 seconds, the Pioneers (10-6-2, 8-3-2 ECAC West) rallied for three unanswered during a 15 minute and 19-second span.

Brittany Dellechiaie cashed in on a two-on-zero opportunity at 8:39 of the first period before Mary Fusco and Louise Steele-Norton helped extend the differential to 3-1, forcing Houle to use his timeout at 3:58 of the second.

“I mean, you just have to regroup at that point in time,” Houle said. “I made a couple of adjustments, and the girls realized what was at stake and went out and played hard. Fortunately, we were able to get those two goals and tie it up.”

Facing their third deficit after the second period all year, VanGlahn cut the differential to one with a shot from the low slot that slipped past Utica goaltender Jennifer Hamel.

Then, with 4:37 remaining in regulation, Stewart tallied her team-leading 19th goal of the season by punching home a loose puck just outside the crease.

The Pioneers held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal in the overtime period, but neither team was able to convert.

Utica finished 1-for-1 on the one-man advantage, while Plattsburgh was 0-for-4.

Sydney Aveson, who was honored with the Fan Favorite award before the contest, fended off 16 of 19 shots faced between the pipes. Hamel was credited with 30 saves on 33 shots.

Stewart, Hamel and VanGlahn were honored as the game’s three stars.

The Cardinals and Pioneers will conclude this weekend’s two-game series today at 3 p.m.

“We need come out and play with intensity and confidence,” Houle said. “We knew they were fast and they would come at us. They came in here with everything to gain and nothing to lose. There are no guarantees — we have to come out and earn it.”

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

Great that an established program like Amherst could "school" a third year program like Norwich , in as you say" the most dominating performance in the D III finals ever".............Really ???? They beat a third year program who yes was in the finals....oh yea and has been every year since I believe....Anyone else make that claim??? Anyone......Anyone....I thought so.....3 times in like 6 years of existence! Not bad...I bet some "established" programs would love to make that claim.

I admire the Norwich program and what Coach Bolding has done.
The intent of my comment (and I apologize for the use of the term 'schooling' in reference to Norwich) was pointing to the goal differential in Amherst winning their semi and final. Looking back the average margin for the champion's 2 wins over 11 seasons has been a 2 game total of 3.9. That figure was eclipsed by Elmira in '03 (5-1 over Manhattanville and 2-1 over River Falls in the semi) and Middlebury '05 (4-3 over Elmira and 7-3 over Gustavus in the semi). Even the unbeaten Plattsburgh '07 team's margin was only 2 (2-1 over Midd and 3-2 over Amherst in the semi), so my point is that Amherst winning the title outscoring opponents 4-0 and 7-2 (by a net 9) is far and away the most dominating record of any team in the 11 years of a women's DIII final.

No. 1 Cardinals blank Pioneers day after tie
By RICKY ST. CLAIR
Press-Republican

PLATTSBURGH — What a difference a day makes.

After settling for a 3-all tie with Utica College Saturday night, the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team received goals from Jenny Kistner, Teal Gove and Bridget Balisy, for a 3-0 blanking of the Pioneers (10-7-2, 8-4-2 ECAC West) Sunday.

“I just thought our forecheck was a lot better and played better in our end,” Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said. “We just moved the puck and didn’t panic in our own zone. We were looking over our shoulder, seeing what options were there and made the right decisions.”

Kistner helped the No. 1-ranked Cardinals (20-0-2, 12-0-1 ECAC West) get on the board at 19:23 of the first period with a short-handed tally.

Chelsea VanGlahn tied up a Utica defenseman along the near-side boards and hit a streaking Kistner with a pass at the top of the circle. Kistner made multiple finesse moves in front before beating goaltender Marissa Hotaling glove side.

“It was a great play by (VanGlahn), she just worked her butt off to turn it over and made a nice pass,” Houle said. “(Kistner) did a nice job holding on to the puck, waiting for the goaltender to go down and putting it upstairs. It was a great goal, and it certainly gave us a boost.”

Plattsburgh’s best period of the weekend occurred in the middle stanza, when it outshot the Pioneers, 16-3, and registered two markers, extending the differential to a three-goal margin.

Gove collected her 19th of the year by batting a loose puck out of mid-air at 5:58 — one second after her team’s second power play of the afternoon expired.

Then, freshman Balisy beat a defender around the edge on the rush and lifted the puck over Hotaling into the back of the net.

“We were able to cycle the puck and control play,” Houle said. “I thought we continued that through the third, but the difference was our number of shots. It was one of those wins where you just keeping working hard and grind it out.”

Sydney Aveson recorded her fifth shutout of the season, saving all 15 shots faced, including multiple chances on two Utica power plays.

“(Aveson) has played great for us all year and didn’t have her best game (Saturday), but she bounced back,” Houle said. “She made the stops when she needed to. If one of those goes in, they have some momentum. She was certainly solid.”

The Cardinals have three games remaining on their regular season schedule beginning Sunday at Potsdam and wrapping up the following weekend at Neumann University.

“We’ve got a couple days off, so the girls have the opportunity to get some much-needed rest,” Houle said. “We’ll get ready for Potsdam and take it one game at a time.”

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

Congratulations to St. A's goalie Brown for shutting down the Midd offense and backstopping her team to a 3-1 win this afternoon! The Panthers looked flat much of the game, went 0/5 on the PP, mounted some pressure to get within 1 on a Sullivan goal mid 3rd, but then gave up a breakaway goal to make it 3-1 and Brown did the rest.

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

1-0 GAC over UWS after 1st. Leikari in net for UWS and Hibbard for GAC.

1-1 after the 2nd. Shots are somewhat even. SH goal for UWS.

I think it ended 1-1. UWS has a PP with :45 to go in OT.

No, I believe you are correct....and then The Lord Jeff's found themselves in Kreitzberg about ...oh 1 month later and they forgot to bring that defensive lesson that they had taught Norwich with them and were handily defeated like 5-1 when it counted in the playoffs......And if I recall it was total domination by the Cadets.........

Let's keep our shirt on shall we? The NCAA game last season was no-contest in favor of Norwich, no arguement. Cadets will visit Orr with the Jeffs coming off bookend wins against Williams. That said, I can't see Amherst staying with Norwich in this one since they will be likley run ragged by the 3rd. Cadets are simply a deeper team. It's a fact the Jeffs have a talented but depleted line-up with average goaltending. Going to be tough for the home team to pull it out.

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

Norwich leads Amherst 3-0 after 2 periods at Orr Rink. Guay, Charron, and Invernizzi with Cadet goals.

Cadets looking to win 11th straight.

Amherst played a strong 3rd, potted a PP goal and did not back down as the Cadets turned up the level of physical play, with the refs choosing to let checking go uncalled. Hope to see the game in Middlebury in person next Tuesday.

Amherst played very well including Opperman ringing one off the cross bar only a few minutes after they made it 3-1.

Norwich's Achilles continues to be the 3rd period this year....gonna have to play 60 mins down the stretch to beat Gustavus, Platty Midd Elmira if they want to get where they ultimately want to be in Superior.

Announcer guy (Mr Eccentric) was quoting some stats about Amherst's poor record against top 15 teams opposed to Norwich which was kind of telling in terms of Amherst's low position compared to other national contenders. Seemed like the Cadets overwhelmed the Jeffs for periods 1 & 2 before Amherst recovered in the 3rd. How much was it Norwich taking their foot off the gas more than Amherst making a legitimate comeback? Cadets started the back-up goalie Fisk and it didn't seem like she was seriously tested on more than a half-dozen occasions. Stuart on the other hand was under pressure more often than not as was the Jeff defense.

Hard to say Fisk is the backup for Norwich. She was injured in practice before the East/West Classic at the start of the season and the Cadets were lucky enought to have Carrier (transfer from Ohio State) on their roster. Fisk started the Bowdoin game at the end of the 1st semester and looking at the boxes for the past weeks there is a rotation with Carrier and Fisk. Never a bad problem to have 2 capable tenders! Perhaps Prez can speak to this issue?

I stand corrected. I took it on face value Fisk was the back-up because she started less games than Carrier. Another example of why your insight is highly valued arouond here.
