Cards spread scoring around in win over Dragons
Press-Republican

CORTLAND — Seven different players scored goals to lead the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team to a 7-1 win over Cortland State Saturday afternoon in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena.

The first-ranked Cardinals (18-0-1, 11-0 ECAC West) built a 3-0 lead after the first period as Jenny Kistner, Andrea Ziesmann and Shannon Stewart each scored.

“We wanted to get out to a good start and win the game in the first period,” Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said. “I think we accomplished that scoring three goals. It certainly didn’t put them away, but it took the life out of them.”

The Cardinals added two goals, both on the power play from Giovanna Senese and Alyssa Parke, in the second period for a 5-0 advantage while outshooting the Red Dragons 26-3.

“I thought the second period was our best period of the hockey game,” Houle said. “We had quality opportunities, and it was a solid effort. It’s good to our players go out and not take these games for granted.”

Senior captain Teal Gove opened the third with a power-play goal 30 seconds into the period before Cortland’s Maggie Giamo netted a short-handed marker 47 seconds later with a shot from the far-side circle. Ali Vakos completed the scoring with a one-timer in front at 11:14.

Senese led the Cardinals with one goal and two assists. Kistner, Parke and Ziesmann each had one goal and one assist. Gove, Vakos and Stewart netted one tally a piece. Sophomore goalie Ally Ross stopped seven of the eight shots she faced.

“We did some different things throughout the course of the weekend with our lineup,” Houle said. “We made some changes and moved some kids around for both games to look at different line combinations. I was pleased with a lot of them. (Senese) had a nice game and is really coming into her own.”

Freshman goalie Deanna Meunier made a career-high 58 saves in the loss for the Red Dragons

Plattsburgh racked up 65 shots on the afternoon, while Cortland was held to eight. The Cardinals went 4-for-5 with the extra skater, while the Red Dragons (4-13-1, 4-8) were 0-for-2.

The Cardinals return home Wednesday for their final nonconference game of the regular season against Middlebury.

“Earlier in the year, we didn’t have time to prep for (Middlebury) because of our game with Amherst,” Houle said. “This weekend, we have a few days, and we have a lot to prepare for. We’ll have a day off (today), and we’ll be back at it (Monday).”

Lady Cardinals improve to 19-0-1 on the season with a 3-1 win over Middlebury. Actually should have been 4-1, Morgan MacInnis had a shot go in that was missed. WPTZ will be showing that footage tonight along with the rest of the highlights of the game, including Allison Era's SICK goal to break the tie.

One of the goals was an EN so actually, the score was 2-1.

Era nets game-winner to keep Cardinals unbeaten
BY RICKY ST. CLAIR

PLATTSBURGH — At this rate, Plattsburgh State women’s hockey coach Kevin Houle should consider changing his team’s nickname to the “Cardiac Cardinals.”

Allison Era’s highlight-reel goal with 7:20 gone in the third period helped the No. 1-ranked Cardinals (19-0-1) to an emotional 3-1 win over fifth-ranked Middlebury College at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena Wednesday.

“What we’re concerned about is playing good hockey and I’ll tell you what — that hasn’t always been the case this year. (Wednesday), we played our best hockey,” Houle said. “Fortunately, we’ve been able to find ways to win in tight games, especially against quality opponents.”

Panthers (12-3-2) goaltender Laura Pinsent was able to keep Houle’s squad scoreless for the first 31:22 of the game before Chelsea VanGlahn jammed in a loose puck, giving Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead at 11:23 of the middle period.

“After (Breanne Bennett) redirected the point shot, the puck basically came right to me,” VanGlahn said. “I was in the right place at the right time to hammer it home. The adrenaline rush afterward sort of lifted our team and got us rolling.”

Morgan MacInnis nearly made it 2-0 at the end of the second period when she skated in for a breakaway opportunity. But her wrist shot appeared to hit the post and bounce back into play.

“The puck looked like it went off the inside of the pipe and came out,” Houle said. “I had no problem with the call; it very well may have (gone in), but it happened so fast.”

Plattsburgh maintained a one-goal lead until Middlebury’s Madison Styrbicki notched the game at 1-all with a power-play goal at 1:55 of the third stanza.

“Even when the score was 1-1, we kept plugging away,” Houle said. “When you’re playing against a goalie that’s having a good night, you can’t get frustrated. That goal could’ve turned the tide for them, but our kids remained composed.”

Era, who began the year as a forward, toe-dragged around two Middlebury defenders and beat Pinsent top shelf, for the game-winning goal with 12:40 to go in the third.

“The toe-drag is what my teammates always say that I go for, so it was kind of cool that (the defensemen) were perfectly lined up for me to do that and finish,” Era said. “Middlebury is honestly one our biggest rivals and they’re a very aggressive team. It’s nice to keep this thing rolling and build momentum.”

Emma Rutherford tallied an insurance marker with 54 seconds remaining in regulation. The marker was unassisted, and the sophomore’s eighth of the year.

Sydney Aveson improved her record to 15-0-1 between the pipes, fending off 10-of-11 shots faced. Pinsent was honored with the game’s second star, making 31 saves on 33 shots.

The Panthers finished the night 1-for-5 on the power play, while Plattsburgh was 1-for-4.

Plattsburgh returns to ECAC West play this weekend, hosting the Utica Pioneers for a two-game slate. The series opens Saturday for 7 p.m. before the final home game of the regular season Sunday at 3 p.m.

empty net goals do count, so it was3-1...

Ughhhh. Really? The cardinals were the better team. They are very fast which has been Middlebury's strength in the past, but Plattsburgh was flying last night. Plattsburgh's 2nd goal was as nice as you will ever see! I have no doubt that Middlebury will be in the NCAA this year, and if Woodward and Sullivan are in the line up they will do well. While Woodward is out with an injury, not sure why Sullivan was missing. She was just voted NESCAC player of the week.

Good luck to both teams the rest of the regular season and into the NCAA's

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

I thought the Cardinals were the better team, too. In the offensive end, I think they used their size advantage (especially their reach advantage) to dig pucks out of the corners all night. In the defensive end, they never let the Panthers breathe with the puck. They were never allowed to carry the puck into the zone and most of their attempted shots and even dump ins were deflected by defensemen. Middlebury is a very good team with rock-solid goaltending, but last night, the Cardinals look like they are a better team.

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

The Card's defense was solid last night! They held Midd to no more than 4 shots per period (3,4,4)! Midd has been averaging over 30 SOG per game!

Pretty impressive feat. There's no doubt these Cards are good and right from the moment RIT announced it was going D-I, I personally had them pegged as the team to beat. So much talent returning up front and a more than capable goaltender between the pipes.

Who can beat them? Well, Elmira, Middlebury and Norwich have all shown they can play with Plattsburgh. Beating them has been another thing. Plus there is also that other undefeated team out west in Gustavus Adolphus....Looming showdown for the national title between two undefeated teams? NOW that would be cool.

Yeah, but does a game between two undefeated teams really happen if it's in Superior and no one is there to see it? OK, different question: would the NCAA consider reopening the hosting of the Phinal Phour if Superior doesn't even make the tournament?

Considering the fact that Superior has a slim to no chance of even making the NCAA's and they aren't considering it...I highly doubt it.
