Cardinals take round one
BY RICKY ST. CLAIR

PLATTSBURGH — In its last three outings, Plattsburgh State women’s hockey coach Kevin Houle said his team wasn’t playing to its full potential.

Saturday night, however, Houle finally got the performance he was looking for.

The No. 1-ranked Cardinals (15-0-1, 8-0 ECAC West) received goals from Allison Era, Andrea Ziesmann, Alyssa Parke and Shannon Stewart en route to a monumental 4-1 win over No. 3 Elmira College at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

“It’s been three lackluster performances, and we’ve talked about that the last week and a half. As I said to our kids in the locker room — our team is back,” Houle said. “That’s our team right there. That’s the way we’re capable of playing against an excellent hockey team.”

Plattsburgh set the tempo right from the get-go when Era ripped a shot in the slot, beating Soaring Eagles (15-2-1, 10-1) goaltender Lauren Sullivan upstairs at 1:06, for a 1-0 lead.

Then, Ziesmann took a blast from the blue line that appeared to be redirected in front and into the back of the net. Ziesmann’s power-play tally was her second goal of the season.

The Cardinals concluded the first period of play up 1-0 on the scoreboard and 16-6 in shots on goal.

“I thought we did a great job in that first and really carried the play,” Houle said. “Once we got it going and got those first two goals, I thought we had some other chances to go up 3-0. I was very happy with the way we came out and executed in that first.”

Parke became the second Plattsburgh defenseman to cash in when she beat Sullivan blocker side from the right point at 11:15 of the middle stanza.

The Cardinals blueliners combined for five points and were active from the point throughout.

“I just think that’s the type of performance those guys are capable of,” Houle said. “They’re all fast, quick and gritty. That’s the performance we needed out of them (Saturday).”

Stewart put the icing on the cake with 3:10 remaining in regulation when she buried her seventh goal in the last four games from the low slot.

Plattsburgh finished 1-for-2 on the power play, while killing off all four of Elmira’s power play chances.

“They’ve got a pretty dangerous power play when they get it setup,” Houle said. “I thought we did a good job of keeping the puck in the neutral zone and their offense out of our zone. They had some good looks once they were able to setup during a 30 or 40-second span. I thought we did a nice job keeping them out of our end.”

Sydney Aveson fended off 22-of-23 shots faced, earning her twelfth victory of the season and the game’s second star. Sullivan was tagged with the loss and surrendered four markers on 31 shots.

Parke and Era were nominated as the first and third stars of the game, combining for two goals and one assist.

The Cardinals will look for their first weekend sweep over the Soaring Eagles since 2008 today at 3 p.m.

“When you play against a team like Elmira back-to-back, it’s going to be tough to sweep them,” Houle said. “We’re going to have to bring our ‘A’ game. We’ll have to play with the same effort and same intensity. With two good hockey teams anything can happen, and we’re looking forward to it.”

Chatham picks up their first conference point this season with a 3-2 OT loss to Cortland.

Not a win, but this game shows that Chatham is competing, and is a much stronger team than previous years.

Cardinals hold off No. 3 Soaring Eagles
BY RICKY ST. CLAIR

PLATTSBURGH — If hockey games consisted of one 20-minute period, the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team would’ve been in the catbird seat Sunday for its second monumental victory in as many days.

But the No. 1-ranked Cardinals (16-0-1, 9-0 ECAC West) had to survive a roller coaster second period that saw them surrender a 4-1 first-period lead before garnering the game-winning goal for a 5-4 win over Elmira College.

“We got in a rut there, and we never got out of it in that second period,” Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said. “With a 4-1 lead going into the second, I didn’t feel like it was safe. I know Elmira is a very good team with some talented players, and they got some opportunities and made the best of them.

“But we were fortunate to come out and get that power-play goal at the end. That was a big goal for us, and I thought we came out in the third and steadied the ship, so to speak.”

The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first period, burying four goals on their first six shots. Emma Rutherford, Shannon Stewart and Morgan MacInnis all scored in the first 9:55 of play.

Yet, the lead was short-lived.

The No. 3 Soaring Eagles (15-3-1, 10-2) picked up consecutive goals from former Plattsburgh forward Ashton Hogan during a two-minute, 12-second span before teammate Ashley Ryan scored at 14:36 to tie the game at four.

Houle sensed a shift in momentum and thought his players were “rattled.”

“No question they were rattled,” Houle said. “They were rattled at 4-3. They were rattled at 4-2. We kind of went back a little bit to the way we played last weekend in terms of giving them opportunities. You can’t give good teams opportunities, and it’s a credit to them for coming back.”

Following an Elmira penalty for too many players on the ice, the Cardinals were awarded their second power-play opportunity of the contest. Allison Era found Teal Gove on a one-time feed at the bottom of the near-side circle, and Gove blasted her third game-winning goal on the season at the 17:40 mark.

“I think the goalie was expecting that puck to go across the crease,” Houle said. “They’re a passive a team on the kill. They just kind of sink everybody back and take away that low play. That’s kind of what we look to do. (Gove) just one-timed it, and the goalie was moving across the net and opened up her pads for the puck to go five-hole.”

Plattsburgh was forced to try to survive a Soaring Eagles 5-on-3 power play for one minute, 29 seconds with 11:08 remaining in the third period. But the Cardinals allowed just one shot from the perimeter.

Sydney Aveson fended off 18 of 22 shots faced for her 13th win of the season, while Lisa Marshall was tagged with the loss.

Both teams finished 1-for-5 on the power play.

The Soaring Eagles lead the Cardinals by two points in the ECAC West standings, but Plattsburgh has seven conference games remaining on its schedule, while Elmira has four.

“Obviously, we have a pretty good leg up right now,” Houle said. “We have some tough games ahead of us, though. We’ve got to take care of business, but we’re in the driver’s seat to control our own destiny.”

Huh?......I'de been thinkin' the same idea, only about Cortland since they've now won 3 in a row......

Chip:cool:

I would like to reply to the coaches or whoever is deciding the top 10.

1. Adrian College stays in the top 10 after getting swept by Lake Forest College who was and remains an unranked team despite the fact that they only have two losses, one of which was to UW Superior, a consistently ranked team. Which
leads into #2.....
2. UW Superior, now ranked above Adrian, got swept by Adrian the weekend before.
3. Manhattanville has yet to beat a top 10 team this year yet they are consistently ranked.

It's embarrassing that this goes on and makes an entire mockery of the top 10. Start paying attention.

I agree! These rankings are a joke. But they make for good discussions over coffee...But then again...who cares...the rankings mean absolutely nothing in the long run anyway...but as long as we're beating a dead horse, how does Platty not get a "unanimous" #1 ranking given who they'veplayed and beaten so far this season?? There shouldn't be a western-based team in the top five!! They haven't proven their worth for the last number of years.

Who should be ranked that isn't?

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

Off the top of my head, I'd take a good long look at Lake Forest.

Despite Lake Forest's 2 losses, there is a lot of inconsitency in their play. The tie to Marian is particularly unforgiveable as well as the tie to CUW.

As far as the Superior/Adrian rankings...I think these teams are interchangeable in the poll. Yes Adrian just swept UWS..but one game was in OT and the only reason that that game on Saturday was because of Zeches. Most other goalies, Superior puts 5 or 6 up in that game...and Peter's let some really soft goals in. Yeah Adrian won, but Superior dominated the flow of the game....I already know your response to that so don't bother. :)

I really think when it comes to the western teams, a lot of coaches stick with who they know. One thing is for sure, looking at remaining schedules...River Falls has the NCHA wrapped up, it will be an interesting fight for 2nd-4th and home ice in the first round.

Actually I take that back...looking at schedules...If both River Falls and Lake Forest win the rest of their games going into the final weekend...both teams will have 30 conference points and be in a winner take all battle in River Falls...its gonna be crazy! Lake Forest definitely has the more challenging road. I'd predict they lose a point or two up in Duluth next weekend...St Norbert at home isn't going to be a cakewalk. Finlandia..they will win that series :)

A better question is...who in the world is voting for St Thomas and St Olaf??? or really Trinity, Hamilton and Amherst. This is the problem with the D3 women's poll. It should probably be a top 7 or 8 poll as opposed to a top 10. In my opinion Superior doesn't deserve to be top 10, Adrian doesn't anymore...Who has Manhattanville beat?? But when you have to put 10 teams in and there are only 10 that really are in the discussion...it makes the poll pointless.

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

You can't make this stuff up... the Plattsburgh at Cortland game is delayed 15-20 minutes because the zamboni "froze up"....

1-0 End of the first. Gove from Stewart. Shots are 13-3.

Last update before I leave work:

Plattsburgh is up 5-0 end of the second. Gove and Stewart have two each so far, shots were 29-5 last I heard.

Cardinal women shut out Cortland
Press-Republican

PLATTSBURGH — Following a weekend sweep of No. 3 Elmira College, the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team wasn’t going to settle with a subpar performance against Cortland State.

The No. 1-ranked Cardinals (17-0-1, 10-0 ECAC West) used a four-goal surge in the second period en route to a 7-0 drubbing of the Red Dragons (4-12-1, 4-7) Friday afternoon.

After the middle stanza’s conclusion, Plattsburgh held a 31-6 lead in shots on goal and a 5-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

“We continued to do what we were doing in the first period — put the puck on net,” Cardinals coach Kevin Houle said. “We got the goalie moving, and we were fortunate to find some holes in the second. We were able to capitalize on opportunities and put points on the board.”

Shannon Stewart accounted for two goals and one assist, while senior captain Teal Gove buried two markers in the seven-goal rout.

“(Stewart) and (Gove) continue to score,” Houle said. “They each had a pretty impressive performance and have been burying the puck for us. It was a total team effort (Friday).”

Bridget Balisy picked up her second of the year, while Morgan MacInnis added her sixth in the third to extend the differential to 7-0.

Plattsburgh limited Cortland to nine total shots throughout the contest and surrendered no more than three in a single period.

“They might’ve had a couple of chances following an expired power play in the second period,” Houle said. “It’s a credit to our offensive play. We spent a lot of time in their end. I’d like to see us come out of our end a little better, though. But we limited their time in our own end with puck possession.”

Sydney Aveson was credited with her fourteenth win and fourth shutout of the season.

Stewart, Gove and MacInnis were named the three stars of the game.

Plattsburgh concludes its weekend series versus Cortland today at 3 p.m.
