College Football 2021: Cash is King

Rutgers had first crack at the Gator Bowl bid due to APR rankings. 8 hours ago they reportedly turned it down, but now they’ve apparently accepted the game against Wake.

USA Today reports that Mickey Marotti, the strength coach for Ohio State football, makes $801,150 per year. The paper lists 10 other college football strength coaches making $500,000 or more. Strength coaches, people.

"Let them eat pigskin." I would not be surprised if the salary of state university football coaches was directly proportional to the state poverty rate.

Just a quick glance using 2021 numbers shows:

Poverty Rate
1. Mississippi (20.3%)
2. Louisiana (19.0%)
3. New Mexico (18.2%)
4. Kentucky (16.3%)
5. Arkansas (16.2%)
6. West Virginia (16.0%)
7. Alabama (15.5%)
8. Oklahoma (15.2%)
9. Tennessee (13.9%)
10. South Carolina (13.8%)

Highest Paid Coaches (by State - Poverty Rank)
1. Nick Saban (Alabama - 7th)
2. Ed Orgeron (Louisiana - 2nd)
3. Dabo Sweeney (South Carolina - 10th)
4. David Shaw (California - 25th)
5. Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma - 8th)
6. Dan Mullen (Florida - 19th)
7. Jimbo Fisher (Texas - 11th)
8. Kirby Smart (Georgia - 13th)
9. James Franklin (Pennsylvania - 22nd)
10. Ryan Day (Ohio - 15th)

So yes, I would guess if you ran the numbers, you would see correlation.

Listen, we can complain about university athletics getting way too much money compared to other parts of the state educational systems, but don't sleep on S&C coaches. If you want your recruits improving each year and not losing the majority of seasons to injuries, you want a good S&C coach. Shannon Turley was the difference between Stanford in the first half of the 10s versus Stanford in the second half of the 10s.

We also should not forget that a probably most of the FB team's salary is being paid for by donors. I know that's the case at Michigan- the head coach has a name preceeding his title.

Hawaii drops out of the Hawaii Bowl which was supposed to take place tomorrow. On the plus side, they did it so late Memphis got a vacation out of it.
