Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Ya, 7-2 what can you say.....score pretty well sums it up. Except for a part of the second period, the game was never in doubt. One goal disallowed for Canada  and all of the penalties were deserved with the exception of maybe one. I wasn't impressed with the leadership of your captain and her sidekick. She took a lot of dumb penalties and seemed to be always looking for trouble, and whining to the refs. I would have sat her. If she would stick to hockey, she would be very effective. Boy Hux, did you ever speak too soon, the stick stuff in the two games I saw was very noticeable. Like you said, I guess they couldn't keep up. It may look bad on the score sheet, but the goalie didn't get very much help from a disorganized defense. She could have been better though. Two of your young guns scored, Kessel and Coyne, which should make you happy. Other than that....well.......can you say sweep? :)

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Stats should really read:

Player No. Team GP W L T Min SH SV SV% GA GAA

Megan Miller 30 USA 2 2 0 0 120 43 39 0.907 4 2.00

Shenae Lundberg 1 USA 1 1 0 0 63 24 22 0.917 2 1.90

Ann-Renee Desbiens 30 CA 1.5 0 1.5 0 90 56 49 0.875 7 4.61

Amanda Makela 1 CA 1.5 0 1.5 0 92 65 61 0.938 4 2.61

Ya, I thought it really odd that both would have high averages. Unless the shots were extremely one sided. Oh well, shoots that all to heck. Regroup. :)

Interesting contrast of coaching philosophies; Canada seemed to roll both lines and defenders throughout the series. US actually shortened their bench; especially the D. They had eight D on roster and essentially only played four and sometimes five. Could be one reason CA seemed to dominate third period each game. Agree Grogan did not get much help tonight. CA very impressive team; fast, strong, and smart with puck. I think US is going to have trouble with this group for awhile.

Don't get the Brown people going again. :) Maybe that is why I noticed the captain so much, albeit for all the wrong reasons.

Why in an exhibition series would you shorten the bench. Can anybodytell me which d played and which d rode the bench.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

The U22 series was an embarrassing display for USA Hockey. In name only was this an exhibition series. Bench shortening actually started at the Lake Placid games. It seems that rather than utilizing the talents of the players they did have, players were played based on their familiarity with the systems that the coaches used.

Decisions were made early as to which systems to use and they were adhered to throughout regardless of their success. With only 8 goals for and 16 goals against, I think the success of said systems speaks for themselves.

And even with the obvious flaws (and more than a week less of practice than the Canadians), the coaches chose to cancel 2 of their practices scheduled in Canada when they could have worked on some of these issues.

The D in particular was very poorly coached. Communication was bad. (They were lucky they only had 1 Too Many Men). For a summer series, some players were grossly overplayed (not being in season shape) and then there were huge letdowns in the 3rd. The PK was way too passive (and CA took full advantage of it last night).

All in all, a very disappointing series to watch.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Yikes. Questionable coaching (there's a surprise as many on this board questioned the selection at the time, ineffective systems, overworked kids, inability to keep up, suspect on ice leadership... other than that it sounds like the U.S. has CA just where they want them.

I agree with the comment that the U.S. will have trouble with this talented group from Canada for quite some time; UNLESS something is done by the U.S. Might start with new leadership and provide more talented players that are out there a chance to get in the mix.

Finally, thanks to those that posted on the board to keep us informed.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

on some of the power plays, and once when short, one of the twins went back and played D. All the line juggling sure hurt more then helped.
Canada just rolled all the lines all game including PP's

Rarely saw ice: Jung (Providence), Wild (OSU), and Vichorek (BSU). All good players; a real waste of time for them. Supposed to be a developmental / evaluation camp. I guess the coaches didn't get the memo.

Monique played the point on the powerplay for her entire year at Minnesota. In fact with Schoullis, Schleper, Erickson, and the Lams on the roster, they could have put that same PP unit out had they wished.

Can understand putting a Lam on pp; but with all the extra D, didn't think you needed a Lam at d on the pk.

Also, note to USA coach: disparaging comments about the CA players will get back to the opposition, since there are USA players who are college teammates and friends on the CA team.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

The American squad canceled two practices they had scheduled in Canada. Can that be true?

What... did they take the team up to Wonderland for sno-cones instead?

If this is the case then they deserved to lose.

Newsflash...This is the ONLY games the US U22 squad plays all year, as they do not participate in any other events in the Calendar year (unless things have changed from years past). The TC U22 team goes to the MLP cup (or whatever they call that these days), usually in late January.

Things do and will change quickly. At the U18 level, the US is clearly outmatching the Canucks at the moment, so in one or two years the pendelum may very well switch the other way.

In addition, TC had a week long strenuous selection camp, followed by a few days of prep for the final selection squad, so it stands to reason that the TC players were more competition ready. That can often be a big difference maker in a short series like this.

In my mind, this raises a couple of questions. First is the US U18 really ahead of Canada's group, and if they are, why? The talent pool in Canada should be deeper at every level, and because U18 teams typically span fewer years than U22 and for sure the senior national teams, one would expect that depth advantage to be even more pronounced here. Second, the players who were part of the first couple US U18 wins have moved on to U22, and there clearly wasn't any remaining advantage. I wouldn't think that it is a case of better development for the Canadian players after the U18 competitions, given that most of them are playing the same college game as those from the US. So if we assume that the US did have an edge at U18 two and three years ago, where did it go? It kind of makes me think that the two are pretty even at U18, and it all comes down to how the game/series evolves.

Short exhibition ! No more, no less.

Dunno about the US, but the Canuck U18 squad this year is not as deep as last years edition. The 92 class in Canada was a real deep one. Two of the better players on the current TC U18 squad are both 94's.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Short exhibition ! No more, no less.

Prior to the US U18 team winning gold in 2008, the US Select Team was beaten pretty convincingly by TCan in the exhibition games in Ottawa. However there were significant personnel changes on the US team after the Ottawa games. Not sure how US coaches played exhibitions; to win or to evaluate players.

I saw two games in that U18 series that year, and the US was shortening their bench that year in the two games I saw, so that concept is nothing new for US teams. Later on the US won the final at worlds in Calgary in fairly convincing fashion (5-2 score IIRC).

Although I was not in attendance at the U18 games in Lake Placid, the report was that the US were physically bigger and stronger than their Canadian counterparts and the smaller players on TC couldn't muster much offense and had difficulty defending as well...thus the shot totals and results. The US team might look to tweak a few things but look for Canada to re-tool and adjust their lineup in December cuz I am sure the weekend results aren't sitting well with the powers that be. Can anyone elaborate on this?
